Selective hydrogenation of lignin-derived model compounds to produce nylon 6 precursors

Zhou, Xiaojuan 12 January 2015 (has links)
This study investigated the conversion of monomeric lignin fragments into cyclohexanols for use as a source of lignin-derived monomers for renewable Nylon 6 production. Lignin-derived monomeric phenolic species was transformed to their cyclohexanol analogs via selective catalytic hydrogenation. A fixed-bed flow reactor was used to evaluate the selective hydrogenation of individual model phenolic species (guaiacol, 4-methylguaiacol or diphenyl ether). The catalyst composition studied was Ni/SiO₂, which was previously shown to form cyclohexanol as an intermediate from phenol. A primary focus was on tuning the reaction conditions to form desired products, while avoiding the formation of bicyclic species which can be precursors to catalyst deactivation, or fully hydrogenated products of lower value. Reaction pathways of guaiacol, 4-methylguaiacol and diphenyl ether were studied. Major products obtained from guaiacol, 4-methylguaiacol and diphenyl ether reactions were 2-methoxycyclohexanone, 4-methylcyclohexanol and cyclohexanol, respectively. Spent catalyst was analyzed for extent of deactivation.

Range and Straggling Measurements of U-235 Fission Fragments

Hallam, John William 10 1900 (has links)
The ranges and stragglings of fission fragments from the thermal neutron fission of U-235 have been measured. Particular attention was given to the preparation of very thin uranium sources, the design of a well collimated recoil system and the preparation of the fragment catcher. The ranges and range distributions in aluminum of fission products of mass numbers 95, 140, 141 and 147 have been obtained. The range values obtained agree with previous determinations within the experimental error. The refined techniques developed in this work have enabled differential range distributions to be obtained which are more precise than any previous determinations. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Cumulative Yields of the Heavy Fragments in U235 Thermal Neutron Fission

Farrar, Harry 05 1900 (has links)
Isotopic abundances of the elements barium, cerium, neodymium, samarium and europium formed in the thermal neutron fission of have been studied with a mass spectrometer. Suitable analyses of very young and old fission products have made possible the normalization of the isotopic abundances of each of these elements through isobaric nuclides. In this manner the relative cumulative fission yield of every fission chain from mass 137 to 154 has been obtained. These yields, together with previously reported relative yields of masses 131 to 137 when normalized to total 100%, give the absolute cumulative yield of all the significant heavy fragment chains. The origin of the fine structure found in this mass yield distribution is discussed. It has been found that all fine structure can be explained in terms of a smooth primary mass-yield curve and a simple neutron distribution both of which are compared with experimental data from other laboratories. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Ambiguous Form

Li, Qian 02 August 2018 (has links)
This thesis is an exploration of the ambiguous form. "Ambiguous" means having multiple interpretations. Usually, a figurative presentation will direct people to a particular thing. On the contrary, if familiarity is provided as the only way, people can find a deceptive scenario, and associate it with the corresponding space in his or her memory. This happens because the images stored in our minds are not very refined, especially the ones we see but do not remember deliberately. So we can say that the ambiguous form triggers our association and thinking. It could give us more affordance about architectural space. In addition, collage, an art of transforming fragments into a whole, is an essential approach for my thesis. The process involves disintegrating something first, analyzing it, then synthesizing the parts together. It is beautiful / Master of Architecture

L'espansione di Roma in Oriente : problemi e interpretazioni : commento storico a Diodoro Siculo, XXXI 1-17b Walton / L'expansion de Rome en Orient : enjeux et interprétations : commentaire historique à Diodore de Sicile, XXXI 1-17b Walton / The Roman Expansion in the East : problems and interpretations : a Historical Commentary on Diodorus Siculus, XXXI 1-17b Walton

Gandini, Alberto 05 June 2013 (has links)
This work consists in an ad locum commentary, both historical and historiographical, on the first half part of the XXXI book of Diodorus Siculus’ Historical Library, that has reached us in fragments. This analysis is about the 34 fragments corresponding to the chapters 1-17b of F.R. Walton’s Loeb edition and to the remaining annalistic narration of the first Olympiad following the battle of Pydna (168/7-165/4BC = Ol. 153). The choice of the subject fits within a new general interest for the two last fragmentary decades of the Historical Library, and particularly for the so called ‘Roman’ books (XXIII-XL). A study of this section of Diodorus’ Bibliotheke seems nowadays essential for a better appraisal of the personality of the historian of Agyrion: this is because of the proximity of the author’s time to the events related and because of the great importance of the two last centuries of Roman history into the global economy of his work. The double perspective adopted aims to point out the historian’s interpretation of the facts narrated, but also to reconsider in an innovative way the problems characterizing the period analyzed, specially under the new light offered by the most recent contributions of the scientific research. Therefore, a privileged place is granted to the reflection on the causes and the procedures of the Roman expansion in the East, in a key-moment for the redefinition of the balance of power between the Urbs and the Greco-Hellenistic world, together with a particular attention to Diodorus’ writing, here considered in its relation with the Polybian tradition.
