Climate impact of frame materials at Regnbågens Preschool in Årjäng : Focusing on carbon dioxide emissions depending on selection of CLT frame or a steel frame with timberstructure compartment walls and concrete floors.Klemetz, Jacob, Eklund, Joseph January 2020 (has links)
Today, the Earth's resources are used at a higher rate than the Earth can manage. The construction industry is one of the sectors that have the greatest negative climate impact, mainly related to high carbon dioxide emissions. This industry continuously strives to develop building- and construction materials resulting in an as low environmental footprint as possible. Recent trends, in the construction industry, shows an increase in the use of cross-limbed timber (CLT) for frame material. The claim is lower environmental footprint at the same time as it gives a better indoor climate compared to other frame materials. This study will be a theoretical comparison of the climate impact as well as the indoor environment between a CLT frame and a combined steel and concrete frame. Both frame alternatives have been designed by the construction company ByggDialog together with their partners. The reference building for this study is Regnbågens Preschool in Årjäng Municipality. The purpose of this study is to raise and create awareness and also provide tools for ByggDialog and their customers enabling a climate-smart frame selection. This will most likely also contribute to achieving the Swedish sustainability goals by 2030. By using data from the Global Warming Potential (GWP) for the input materials, the climate impact was calculated. Each construction frame type data was analyzed during the product phase which include raw material supply, transport and manufacturing (module A1-A3) in the form of emissions of carbon dioxide equivalents. A literature study was also conducted to analyze how a frame of CLT affects indoor environment. The result showed that by using a CLT frame material versus a combined steel and concrete-frame the environmental reduction was about 50% and about 12% increase in cost. When calculating the carbon dioxide emissions per SEK, it was found that the CLT frame construction had about 67% lower carbon dioxide emissions per SEK compared to a combined steel and concrete frame. The literature study showed that a frame material of CLT provides a more evenly distributed humidity, poorer heat storage capacity and less sound absorption capacity in the form of step- and frame sound compared to a combined steel and concrete frame construction. Further research in this field indicates that by having visible wood, for example a CLT frame provides an experience of safety, relaxation and general well-being for people in the building.

A Study of the Seismic Performance of Early Multi-Story Steel Frame Structures with Unreinforced Masonry InfillPotterton, Kristin 01 January 2009 (has links)
Steel frame construction with unreinforced masonry infill walls is a common system found in high-rise structures built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Recorded performance of this dual system during seismic events shows that the structures are able to resist a high level of lateral loads without collapse, primarily because a majority of damage is confined to the infill walls instead of the gravity carrying frame. To better understand expected performance of this structural system in different seismic risk regions, a prototypical building was analyzed using modal and nonlinear static procedures based on currently accepted evaluation guidelines. Nonlinear results from the computer model were compared with calculated target displacements for seventeen cities likely to have steel frame construction with unreinforced masonry infill in order to determine expected damage levels at varying levels of seismic risk. It was concluded that the structural system studied could experience damage in all seismic risk regions, including post-yield damage of the structure, although in low risk regions that damage is confined entirely to the infill walls. Practicing structural engineers should be aware that in all seismic risk zones existing steel frame buildings with unreinforced masonry infill, while able to resist a high magnitude of displacement without complete structural failure, will require additional lateral support under currently accepted rehabilitation guidelines.

Moisture saftey; Robustness; Cost; Exterior wall; Light frame; Heavy frame; Construction details Abstract på engelska: Function and design have always been critically important when designing exterior walls. Several designs can be possible but are largely dependent upon the framework system, facade material as well as various other considerations. The client, WSP, wish to guarantee quality whilst reducing planning time but also maintaining factors such as moisture safety, robustness and cost. The basis of the work consisted of interviews with designers, revision of literature and product supplier liaison. Based upon analysis of collected material, the designs have been developed to ensure a maximum life span. The result has produced both heavy and light frame designs by utilising plaster, brick and sheet materials for the facade construction. The relevant technical descriptions, U-values and overall cost estimates have been developed for each construction details.

Conflicting Frames: A Comparative Analysis of General and Diasporic Media Framing of Violent Conflict in the Diaspora's HomelandBlom, Maartje January 2024 (has links)
Despite extensive research into the effects of framing in media, much less is still known about how and why these frames constructed. The field of media framing has also neglected reporting on violent conflict, instead focusing on different types of non-violent conflict, especially in terms of frame analysis. This study aims to expand on framing theory by studying the framing of diaspora-specific media in reporting on violent homeland conflict, in comparison with general media in the diaspora’s country of residence. Despite arguments that diasporic media negatively impact integration, further polarisation or contribute to conflict recreation in the country of residence, there has been little research into the reporting by diasporic media. In this thesis, I argue that diasporic and general media will differ in their framing of violent conflict in the diaspora’s homeland because of two factors: (1) the expected levels of interest and knowledge among the medium’s target audience and (2) the knowledge and objectives of the journalists producing the reporting. Through in-depth analysis of a collection of articles of the New York Times and the Armenian Mirror-Spectator on the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War, I find that there are indeed considerable differences between the framing of the two news media. Diasporic media use more thematic framing in their reporting, whereas general media use more episodic framing in their reporting on the conflict. Furthermore, the framing by diasporic media aligns with central (conflict) narratives of the diaspora’s collective memory, whereas general media present a mix of different conflict perspectives. Finally, this analysis showcases some of the issues of applying concepts derived from the framing of non-violent contexts to violent conflict settings. These findings further the understanding of both the reporting of diasporic media, relative to the reporting by general media, and the knowledge on the types of framing used in reporting on violent conflict, and what drives the construction of such frames. This study also highlights the importance of the consideration of violent conflict in the study of framing, and the need for further research into framing of violent conflict.
