This document presents an annotation model for cooperative software development, and an object-oriented application framework for diagram editors called ABCDE (Annotation Based Cooperative Diagram Editor). Cooperation among users is achieved by using annotations on diagrams. Annotations are used by the authors to communicate ideas or opinions about a document. A framework is an abstract object-oriented design that can be tailored according to specific applications. The framework developed in this work, ABCDE, provides support for the construction of annotation based cooperative diagram editors for class diagrams of UML methodology. The main configurable aspect of ABCDE is the annotation model used, so editors built from ABCDE can be tailored to particular needs of different tasks in software developrnent. The contributions of this work are: (i) the specification of a cooperation model for cooperative software development. This model uses annotations as a mean to support collaboration, supports the revision and co-authoring tasks, and is independent of methodology for software development. Moreover, it can be extended to support different tasks of software development process; (ii) the framework ABCDE (Annotation Based Cooperative Diagram Editor), which main hot-spot is the annotation model used, because it implements the cooperation model developed; and (iii) the ABCDE- Web system, a prototype developed from ABCDE that can be used for software development on the Web / Mestrado / Mestre em Ciência da Computação

Design of a Host-guest Hybrid Catalytic System Through Aperture-opening Encapsulation Using Metal-organic Framework:Li, Zhehui January 2019 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Jeffery A. Byers / Thesis advisor: Chia-Kuang Tsung / Homogeneous catalysts are advantageous in selective catalysis due to the well-defined active site at the molecular level. The poor recyclability, bimolecular aggregation, and undesired poison resistance of homogeneous catalysts hinder further industrial application despite the controlled reaction pathway due to the homogeneous environment. On the other hand, heterogeneous catalysts are preferred in industry due to their high recyclability and high activity. Yet, poor selectivity due to undefined active sites is a drawback. The construction of a host-guest system where a molecular level catalyst is incorporated into the Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) provides a promising solution to bridge those two fields. This composite maintains the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and overcomes the disadvantages. However, finding an incorporation method that is versatile with minimum synthetic modification of the host and guest remains one of the challenges. In the first part of this dissertation, a new concept called “aperture-opening encapsulation’’ is introduced for incorporating large and diverse guest molecules into MOFs without changing the identity of either the guest or MOF. The approach capitalizes on the existence of linker exchange reactions, which, as our kinetic studies show, proceed via competition between associative and dissociative exchange mechanisms. The second part describes how this method is applied to incorporate a molecular catalyst into the cavity of UiO-66 for the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to formate, which is a useful application for energy related industry. The developed hybrid composite showed the ability to be recycled, showed no evidence of bimolecular catalyst decomposition, and was less prone to catalyst poisoning. These results demonstrate for the first time how the aperture-opening process resulting from linker dissociation in MOFs can be utilized as a strategy to synthesize host-guest materials useful for chemical catalysis. After the establishment of the hybrid catalyst, the last part of the dissertation describes our efforts into the investigation of mass transport in catalysis. The understanding of the interaction between the host-guest is beneficial for the development of biological analogs in the future. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2019. / Submitted to: Boston College. The Dynamite Press : a publishing house and book village in a historical and industrial precinct (Modderfontein) in northeast JohannesburgDavey, Janice 03 December 2012 (has links)
The study has investigated a design intervention to the historically significant industrial precinct of Modderfontein. Modderfontein contains the first dynamite explosives factory in South Africa and is situated 20km northeast of Johannesburg. The area and its old buildings are relatively unknown. Due to the introduction of the Gautrain and the proposed development of the Modderfontein station and surrounds, the area will be densified and become more accessible. The intention of the framework proposed by the author is to activate the Main Street which contains the First Factory Manager’s house and the Dynamite Company Museum. This would be achieved by densifying the village with a series of buildings in clusters that have public, office and residential components. It is proposed that one of the clusters becomes a Book Village. The proposal will adhere to the various guidelines in a sensitive, contemporary manner. / Dissertation MArch(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Architecture / MArch(Prof) / Unrestricted

Legal and ethical considerations of Pharmaceutical Cognitive Enhancer use in South Africa : towards a legal frameworkBarit, Avi January 2019 (has links)
The advancement of medicine around the world is happening at a rapid speed. There is not a day that one does not hear about a disease being cured or a wonder-drug being developed. Medicine has always been a field that treated a sick patient to bring that person back to “normal” function, which could be said to be the state he or she was in before acquiring the disease in question. However, due to scientific breakthroughs humanity is in a position that historically it has never been before. A place where a person can increase their mental and physical performance using pharmaceuticals to a level where genetics and upbringing alone would not have allowed.
Pharmaceuticals have been created which can do for the brain what has been done for the body. These drugs provide an avenue in which a person’s cognitive functions can be increased beyond what was otherwise possible. The ethical and legal dilemmas posed by prescribing or allowing people to use nootropics is hotly debated. Greely, a leading figure in the bioethical debate, in connection with nootropics, has stated that the ethical concerns comprise three main aspects: safety, fairness and coercion., It is clear that these three aspects cover a wide ambit. The arguments for and against nootropics will not merely be rehashed but rather placed into the South African context to ascertain how best to provide for the ethical concerns relevant to South Africa. The ethics of nootropic use will be examined through the lens of the Beuchamp Childress model which determines ethical problems using the principles of autonomy, justice, beneficence and non-maleficence.
The aim and contribution of this thesis will be to build a legal framework for the use of nootropics in South Africa, to create this one must ascertain what the current legal position is. Law is built from precedent in context of case law and legislation. The current law will be examined to see what can be used, what may need to be discarded and what would need to be added. A layered approach is used to determine what the legal position in South Africa currently is. A layered approach looks at the constitution and proceeds to legislation, case law, and legal articles and books. A major aspect around the use of nootropics will be informed consent and how it relates to the use of nootropics especially with regards to adolescents i.e. under 18 years of age. This thesis follows an MPhil in Medical Law and Ethics which outlined the doctrine of informed consent in South Africa and thus allows for the application of this doctrine to a pressing issue in South African society. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2019. / Public Law / PhD / Unrestricted
