Coordinated Control and Optimization of Virtual Power Plants for Energy and Frequency Regulation Services in Electricity MarketsZhang, Fan 2011 December 1900 (has links)
With increasing penetration of intermittent resources such as wind and solar, power system operations are facing much more challenges in cost effective provision of energy balancing and frequency regulation services. Enabled by advances in sensing, control and communication, the concept of Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is proposed as one possible solution which aggregates and firms up spatially distributed resources? net power injection to the system. This thesis proposes a coordinated control and bidding strategy for VPPs to provide energy balancing and grid frequency regulation services in electricity market environment. In this thesis, the VPP consists of two energy conversion assets: a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG)-based wind farm and a co-located Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS). The coordination of the VPP is implemented through power electronics?based controllers. A five-bus system test case demonstrates the technical feasibility of VPPs to respond to grid frequency deviation as well as to follow energy dispatch signals. To enable the participation of VPPs in electricity market, this thesis also proposes an optimization based bidding strategy for VPPs in both energy balancing and frequency regulation service markets. The potential economic benefits of this bidding strategy are demonstrated under Denmark wholesale electricity market structure. Four case studies show the economic benefit of coordinating VPPs.

This thesis investigates the computation of invariance kernels for planar nonlinear systems with one input, with application to wind turbine stability. Given a known bound on the absolute value of the input variations (possibly around a fixed non-zero value), it is of interest to determine if the system's state can be guaranteed to stay
within a desired region K of the state space irrespective of the input variations. The collection of all initial conditions for which trajectories will never exit K irrespective of input variations is called the invariance kernel. This thesis develops theory to characterize the boundary of the invariance kernel and develops an algorithm to compute the exact boundary of the invariance kernel.
The algorithm is applied to two simplified wind turbine systems that tap kinetic energy of the turbine to support the frequency of the grid. One system provides power smoothing, and the other provides inertial response. For these models, limits on speed and torque specify a desired region of operation K in the state space, while
the wind is represented as a bounded input. The theory developed in the thesis makes it possible to define a measure called the wind disturbance margin. This measure quantifies the largest range of wind variations under which the specified type of grid support may be
provided. The wind disturbance margin quantifies how the exploitation of kinetic energy reduces a turbine's tolerance to wind disturbances. The improvement in power smoothing and inertial response made available by the increased speed range of a full converter-interfaced turbine is quantified as an example.

This pricing is based on the use and availability costs of reserve; under an economic and reliable system operation. In order to do that, firstly an overview of technical characteristics and pricing methods of the ancillary services in different systems is presented. Then, in order to fit this pricing methodology to the corresponding regulation, commercialization and operation rules, an introduction of the Brazilian electrical sector is realized. Next, two reserve ancillary services pricing methods are presented. The first one considers a hydraulic generator point of view. In this case, the aim is to set up the real value of the services by mean of a generator costs analysis. These costs include, basically, availability and use costs. Power mapping and aggregation as a service : A techno-economic view on Li-ion batteries for peak shaving and frequency regulationAngwald, Filip January 2020 (has links)
The world's energy supply today mainly consists of fossil fuels and nuclear power. Moving away from the use of these energy resources to renewable energy sources is considered a prerequisite for a sustainable future. In order to implement this change, it is necessary for renewable energy sources to be environmentally, technically and economically sustainable. A major challenge encountered in terms of technological sustainability is the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. As the share of renewable electricity increases in the system, the electricity grid is facing new challenges such as increased instability of the frequency and capacity shortages. In order to meet these new challenges an increased flexibility from electricity users is proposed as a solution. Flexibility can be achieved either by controlling the use of electricity or utilizing energy storages. If different electric loads are to be controlled in a property, data regarding the power use of the loads must first be collected with a high time resolution in order to be able to properly analyze the data. Measures to shift or reduce the power peaks in a property can then be suggested and implemented. A battery storage can help reduce power peaks or shift loads in time and if done on a large scale that would reduce the strain on the entire Swedish grid. One of the ancillary services that the battery could offer is frequency regulation. Using energy storages for such an application could also provide a secondary revenue stream, aside from the revenue stream from peak shaving, and increase the profitability of the storage. Sweden has seen a dramatic increase in electric vehicles over the last decade and charging of the vehicles has become an issue for many property owners as it often creates power peaks. The data collection regarding power use in properties performed in during this thesis showed that valuable data can be collected with the method and material used. With a battery price of 3000 SEK/kWh the payback time for a battery system can be reduced from 17,9 to 7,8 years if it is used for frequency regulation during the night. If power-intensive loads such as electric vehicle charging are added to the model the payback period decreases to 6,1 years. With these results in mind, it can be concluded that the profitability of a battery storage can increase to the extent that the investment is of economic viability. In addition, the investment helps to improve the stability of the Swedish grid. The results are found to be relatively consistent with those of other similar studies. / <p>Digital presentation</p>

Thesis (MEng (Electrical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2019 / Electric utilities are confronted with challenges like rising fuel costs, aging equipment, increasing energy demand, frequency regulation and the difficulty to integrate renewable energy resources into the grid. The presence of photovoltaic (PV) penetration on the utility grid is also increasing significantly in recent years. With the recent rise in PV penetration and the advancement of the global PV industry, there is an urgent and a necessary need to introduce features in PV systems that will make them respond smartly. However, much of these can be addressed without negatively affecting the total performance and power quality of the grid. Hence, engaging smart Grid technologies, and leveraging the benefits of the distributed nature of PV, new prospects to unearth value can be created. Through the implementation of progressive energy storage techniques, efficient two-way communications, a grid-tied PV system can create significant value, mostly through improved PV contribution in grid support functions like frequency regulation.
An enhanced frequency regulation functioning scheme for a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system is modelled in MATLAB/Simulink software environment. The system is designed to operate in grid ancillary services precisely, frequency regulation function. The model consists of a Photovoltaic (PV) plant with a battery connected to the grid through a three-phase inverter. A bi-directional DC-DC converter between the grid and the battery system is included. The model has a battery storage system that provide steady and regular active/reactive powers available while the grid transmit specific amounts of power needed for a specific duration. According to the design, either the grid or the PV system depending on the dominant energy situation charges the battery. The battery is designed to discharge only when the grid demands energy from the PV and if the PV system fails to meet the demanded active power or reactive power. The PV system and the battery storage is integrated with the grid with the aid of dc-ac inverter in such a manner that bi-directional flow of active and reactive power is achieved.
A 1 MW PV system is connected to the utility grid through a three-phase voltage source inverter system. The grid nominal frequency is set at 50 Hz under normal operation. However, the frequency decreased when the PV was not producing required power hence, the battery responded almost instantaneously and returned the frequency to the nominal frequency. The effectiveness of battery storage system for utility grid frequency regulation was substantiated from the simulation results attained.

Aggregated Demand-Side Energy Flexibility : Residential Assets Potential FCR-D Revenues and Energy Forecast OptimizationEriksson, Erik January 2024 (has links)
Today, power grids are designed as a traditional large-scale centralized generation. However, as more renewable asynchronous resources are integrated, the share of rotating synchronous machines decreases. These asynchronous resources lack the inherent inertia from conventional generation, resulting in new challenges in power grid management. Without proper measures, the frequency might deviate significantly during system disruptions. During a frequency deviation, the power system operator activates power reserves to mitigate and maintain the balance. Currently, these reserves the vast majority of hydropower. New technologies for providing these reserves are needed with increasing intermittent power generation. One potential technical asset to reduce these challenges resides in demand-side energy flexibility. Demand-side energy flexibility for residential has mostly been large, but disregarded resources since small individual consumers lack the required capacity to provide ancillary services. This necessitates the need for aggregation as a possible solution. This master thesis aims to investigate the economic potential for utilizing demand response, battery energy storage systems, and electric vehicle charging as a resource for frequency containment reserves to stabilize the power system. The thesis investigates the demand-flexibility for each asset based on residential behavior to determine the complete potential regarding requirements set by the system operator. The study also investigates how ABB AbilityTM OPTIMAX®, as an optimization tool, could optimize the model’s energy demand to generate increased energy cost savings. The results of the investigation’s indicate great potential for all assets when aggregated, especially the aggregation of the battery energy storage system and the wastewater heat pump system. The study showed the tool ABB AbilityTM OPTIMAX®’s energy-saving potential, especially when integrating the model with photovoltaic generation with battery energy storage systems. Observations that led to further discussions included whether oversizing assets could be an option to increase demand flexibility and revenue. / Dagens elnät är konstruerat som en storskalig centraliserad production. Dessa laster är ventilation,spillvattenvärmepump, belysning, elbilsladdning och batterilagring. För attbestämma den total tillgängliga kapaciteten undersöker även studien varje enskildtillgångs förbrukningsflexibilitet, vilket beror av boendes vanor, väderlek, mm.Slutligen undersöker även studien möjliga energikostnadsbesparingar med attanvända ABBs optimeringsprogram ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX®. In this study, an examination regarding what benefits an aggregatedpopulation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) could result incompared to when the individual units in the population are being usedseparately has been executed. The increased flexibility and reducedsafety margins as results of the aggregation was also examined. Thestudy was executed on behalf of the smart energy service companyCheckWatt AB and the study furthermore rests upon results of earlierperformed master theses on behalf of the company. By investigating previous work and studies through a literature study,the enabling of anumerical study was done. The numerical study wasbased on a simple model of a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) where severalBESSs are smartly controlled in order to be used for both local peakshaving and as common providers of the frequency reserve FrequencyContainment Reserve - Normal (FCR-N). The study involved the formation of a numerical model which simulated cases of both aggregated and non-aggregated populations of up to 45 load profile units, this in order for advantages and differences to be distinguished. The data used inthe simulations was received mainly from the CheckWatt AB andconsisted of photovoltaic (PV) electricity production and load data of 45 customers of the company. A sensibility analysis of the numericalstudy was also performed, which showed that the studied model andsystem were quite stable. The results of the simulations of the case of the study proved thatthere are some advantages connected to aggregation of several BESSs,and that the aggregation enabled an added value and a higher level offlexibility within the system. The safety margins connected todelivery of FCR-N could be reduced when aggregating several BESS,while a more extensive study is requested regarding safety marginsconnected to peak shaving. The study’s results further showed that anaggregator can be used as a sustainable and flexible solution forbalancing the electrical grid in the transition to a sustainableenergy system allowing a higher penetration of intermittentenergy sources.
