Eletro-oxidação de ácido fórmico assistida por hidrazina / Formic acid electro-oxidation assisted by hydrazine

Machado, Eduardo Giangrossi 09 January 2017 (has links)
Recently, the mechanism by which formic acid is oxidized is a matter of debate on the literature. There is disagreement on the pathways that the process may occur as well as which would be the intermediates participating. In this sense, there are some work exploring another aspect of this reaction, such as its behavior facing the addition of an additive. Among them, hydrazine has been chosen as it is another molecule of interest for energy generation devices such as fuel cells. In this fashion, it is argued that the presence of hydrazine would not interfere in the electro-oxidation of formic acid and, therefore, would yield an additive current when being co-oxidized. The complex behavior of a system may display new and relevant information thus this methodology was employed to revisit this system. It was found that the system would behave, instead of the argued additive behavior, synergistically and that there are striking differences on the time-series of formic acid, such as an increase on the duration of the process and the alteration of some of its variables. Also, it was observed a change in the potentiostatic oscillations, showing a dependence of the process with the morphology of the surface employed. It was proposed that hydrazine would act reducing the accumulation of oxygenated species on the surface of the electrode, postponing the end of the time-series. Next, it was employed a spectrometric technique (DEMS) to evaluate the production of gaseous products (CO2) and it was found that, in the presence of hydrazine, formic acid gets oxidized in a more facile way, in lower overpotential values. It was proposed that, besides preventing the accumulation of oxygenated species, hydrazine would disturb the decomposition of formic acid to COads, allowing a direct oxidation in lower overpotentials. Finally, for deepening the understanding of the superficial processes it was employed an imaging technique (EMSI). It was discovered that the decomposition of formic acid to COads there is a reactional front that repeats itself cycle after cycle during the time-series and that it is possible to monitor changes in the coverage of adsorbates by changes in the intensity of the image. It was not possible to obtain data in the presence of hydrazine since it generates many bubbles that disrupt the experiment. As conclusion of this work it is presented the thesis that, with the amount of evidences herein presented, the interaction between formic acid and hydrazine is synergistical rather than additive, as stated on the literature.

Phasing out peat from a co-fired 50 MWth circulating fluidized bed boiler : A theoretical sulfation potential study

Bergstrand, Axel January 2022 (has links)
The chemical company Perstorp AB has a 50 MWth circulating fluidized bed to supply the production plant with process steam. The fuel mixture used shows a large variation with about 20 different fuel fractions that can be divided into the categories, residue wood chips, sludge, forest fuel, animal waste, industrial residues, and peat. From an economic and environmental perspective, the use of peat should be minimized because it is classified as a fossil fuel. Peat has positive combustion characteristics due to a combination of sulfur and silica based minerals that can reduce alkali chloride related corrosion. Therefore it is not always possible phase out peat without negatively affecting the boilers availability. Besides reducing CO2 emissions, it is desirable to reduce the use of additives such as limestone and to use cheap waste fractions as fuels when operating a boiler. Similar to peat, reduced use of limestone and the introduction of a new waste fractions can affect the boiler availability negatively. If less limestone is used the risk of agglomeration can increase and often waste products can contain ash elements problematic in both a agglomeration and corrosion perspective. The aim of this master thesis is to investigate the possibility of reducing the usage of peat by minimizing the limestone content and to see if it would be possible to add a new Na-rich waste fraction to the fuel mixture. This was investigated by determining first what fuels that are used and in what amounts. Each fuel was either sent for new elemental analysis or existing analyses were used depending on if it was deemed to be still representative. With the help of experienced personnel working with the boiler, future possible cases for fuel mixtures could be determined: Case 1. Replacing peat with forest fuels. Case 2. Replacing peat with residue wood chips. Case 3. Replacing both peat and animal waste with residue wood chips. Case 4. Introducing Na-rich fuel. The theoretical available SO2 content could be determined for each case and three limestone levels. For each case the CO2 emissions and the economic savings could be estimated when the peat were fully removed and the limestone content halved. From an SO2 perspective, the results indicate that it could be possible to phase out peat for cases 1-2 by adjusting the limestone levels but this would not be enough for case 3. Adding the Na-rich fuel could also be problematic and more investigation has to be put into potential additives and fuels to compensate for the additional Na.When peat is fully phased out in case 1-3 the CO2 emission would decrease by 10 000 tonCO2/year. Due to the cost of CO2 emissions, this could result in considerable monetary savings. From the results it is estimated that case 1 could save 9.1 million SEK/year, case 2 10.3 million SEK/year, and case 3 6.5 million SEK/year when the peat is fully removed. This does not include changes in availability and maintenance costs.

Nevot Cercós, Javier 17 March 2000 (has links)
In the present thesis a control system for the air-fuel mixture in a reciprocating four-stroke engine is developed, based on neural networks. The air-fuel ratio has to be kept within a very narrow window so that the catalyst achieves an acceptable degree of purification simultaneously with all the polluting gases. In steady state, this goal can be fulfilled without difficulties, but the usual operation of a vehicle is in a very transient state, where the conventional systems are not able to avoid important excursions from the set point. They also rely on a great number of look-up tables, which have to be tuned experimentally, thus with an enormous investment of money and time.To avoid those problems a mathematical model of an engine has been designed, in such a way that it comprises of the whole mixture formation process, sensors, the torque generation and the vehicle dynamics. Finally it has been implemented in the simulation language MatLab/Simulink®. The required data is easily available both from metrology, and experimental work. It has been validated with a 1,6 litre 74 kW SEAT engine. As a first step, a quite simple conventional control strategy has been applied, consisting of a static feedforward controller, and a PI or PID feedback controller. This has permitted studying the main features of the engine from the control point of view. With the obtained results an observer based on a neural network has been designed, which eliminates the delays of the system and that can be used to close the control loop. First a feedforward network has been used, but due to the bad results, a recurrent neural network has been developed starting from the Elman network, which has been properly modified in order to adapt it to the characteristic difficulties of the problem. The training algorithm used is based on that of classical backpropagation, and it modifies not only the weights interconnecting different layers, but also those corresponding to the context neurons, which allow the memorising of internal states. The main improvement consists in separating the context neurons in as many groups as the network has inputs, and to train them separately, so that each group adapts to the particular dynamics of the input with which it is associated. The behaviour of the engine plus the observer in closed loop is shown by means of simulation, and is compared with the conventional scheme. It is proven the robustness of system response to different set points, noise in the plant and tuning defects.

Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Teillaststeuerung von Ottomotoren mit vollvariablem Ventilhub / Potential and limitation in partial load control of spark-ignited combustion engines using fully variable valve lift

Löbbert, Philipp 24 October 2006 (has links) (PDF)
