Full-time mentors: a qualitative study of new teacher perceptions

Armstrong, Patrick Sean 22 December 2010 (has links)
This study examines the perceptions of new teachers regarding the benefits of full-time mentorship based on one particular new teacher induction program. Six new teachers and three mentors were interviewed in this study. Data indicated that full-time mentors could effectively introduce new teachers into the teaching profession if certain conditions were present. New teachers perceived the following benefits from effective full-time mentorship: increased confidence in their abilities, opportunities for non-evaluative observation and feedback, practice teaching of lessons prior to administrative evaluations, support with resources and materials specific to their situation, and the opportunity to ask critical questions in complete confidence. However, these benefits were not perceived when an unmanageable mentor-to-teacher ratio was present. One finding not prevalent in the literature was the characteristic of disassociation whereby teachers new to the profession had difficulties disassociating their professional work lives from their personal lives. The suggestion is made that further study is warranted to determine if the characteristic of disassociation could be used as a predictor of new-teachers at risk of leaving the profession. This study concludes by making eight recommendations for improving full-time mentor support and new teacher induction.

Part-time versus full-time occlusion therapy for treatment of amblyopia: A meta-analysis

Yazdani, N., Sadeghi, R., Momeni-Moghaddam, H., Zarifmahmoudi, L., Ehsaei, Asieh, Barrett, Brendan T. 03 June 2017 (has links)
Yes / Purpose: To compare full-time occlusion (FTO) and part-time occlusion (PTO) therapy in the treatment of amblyopia, with the secondary aim of evaluating the minimum number of hours of part-time patching required for maximal effect from occlusion. Methods: A literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Ovid, Web of Science and Cochrane library. Methodological quality of the literature was evaluated according to the Oxford Center for Evidence Based Medicine and modified Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Statistical analyses were performed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (version 2, Biostat Inc., USA). Results: The present meta-analysis included six studies (three randomized controlled trials [RCTs] and three non-RCTs). Pooled standardized difference in the mean changes in the visual acuity was 0.337 [lower and upper limits: 0.009, 0.683] higher in the FTO as compared to the PTO group; however, this difference was not statistically significant (P ¼ 0.056, Cochrane Q value ¼ 20.4 (P ¼ 0.001), I2 ¼ 75.49%). Egger's regression intercept was 5.46 (P ¼ 0.04). The pooled standardized difference in means of visual acuity changes was 1.097 [lower and upper limits: 0.68, 1.513] higher in the FTO arm (P < 0.001), and 0.7 [lower and upper limits: 0.315, 1.085] higher in the PTO arm (P < 0.001) compared to PTO less than two hours. Conclusions: This meta-analysis shows no statistically significant difference between PTO and FTO in treatment of amblyopia. However, our results suggest that the minimum effective PTO duration, to observe maximal improvement in visual acuity is six hours per day.

This investigation was developed within the research área of “Training ofneducation professionals, educational policies and public school” of the Post-Graduate Education, from tehe University of Science and Technology of the Estadual Paulista Universityb (FCT/UNESP). It addresses the complexity of teacher education and its relationship with the school full-time, defending the need and importance of investments in the training of teachers and administrators, thoug these are not the focus of the proposed policy. Aims to reflect on how the school and its actors translate the implementation and training of teachers of this school of contracts, considering them as subjects endowed with knowledge, experience, abilities and possibilities that accredit to join the debate from the perspective of expanding opportunities training to these subjects with a view to improving the quality of public education and integral formation of students. He sought to answer the following research question: How does the school and its actors translate the implementation and training of teachers to the Full Time School project? The qualitative study, used the literature (in national databases) and documentary (laws, resolutions, ordinances, decrees, opinions etc.) and the dialogical group as work strategy for the collection of empirical data. Fieldwork was developed in the county of Araçatuba, SP involving three schools that have implemented the Integral Education Project from the year 2007. Research was attended by a total of 26 professionals, including managers, teachers and monitors curriculum of workshops respective institutions. At this stage, the main data collection tools were: questionnaire and dialogical Group. The processing of data occurred through content analysis which is a technique with certain methodological characteristics namely: objectivity, systematization and inference (Franco, 2008; Richardson, 2010). The results pointed to a translation of the reality of comprehensive education in the still fragile county; fundamentally anchored in the expansion of time and performing the prescribed proposal without understanding (legal, theoretical and pratical of the school unit organization within the town school system) the significante of this, followed by its redefinition to the reality of each context. However, despite the difficulties and challenges faced, the school actors have sought success in the forms of operation, some more progressive and still others focused on welfare. The results confirm what the literature points already on the training of teachers and the need to invest in their professional development as the main actor in the transformation process within schools. Also, indicates the need to rethink the school culture and its agents as an opportunity of collective work for the reorganization, from the challenges identified in a school full-time to promote the development of citizens covering the cognitive, emotional aspects, social and evaluative. / FAPESP: 201414750-4

Medel Manríquez, Elisa María 11 1900 (has links)

The impact of full-time Christian ministry on the spiritual well-being of the ministering family's children : a pastoral study / P. Murray

Murray, Petronella January 2009 (has links)
This research focuses on the problem field of those called to full-time Christian work and specifically how the interpretation and implementation thereof has an impact on the spiritual well-being of the adolescents growing up in this context. The purpose of the study is to identify the challenges parents and adolescents experience and to minimise the negative impact thereof through praxis theoretical guidelines for spiritual nurturing. A Biblical perspective on calling to full-time Christian ministry as well as an understanding of the God-given mandate to parents to nurture the spiritual well-being of their family, forms the basis of this research. Insight into the problem field was gained through empirical research conducted by means of structured and unstructured interviews. Adolescents whose parents are presently in full-time Christian work were interviewed by means of a questionnaire as well as an in-depth conversation. Interviews with adults who had grown up in context of full-time Christian work during the 1970's and 1980's gave insight into the long-term impact on spiritual well-being. Parents in full-time Christian work, who are raising adolescents, shared their perspectives and challenges in interviews. Research in the social sciences confirmed the Biblical perspective that the family is the best environment for both adults and children to grow to maturity. Integration of all the dimensions of life is essential for the process growth within the family and is an ongoing dynamic process which continually requires observation, evaluation and change. This study concludes by offering guidelines to parents in full-time Christian work on spiritual nurturing of their family as the primary focus of their ministry. The result of this approach is that the family is restored to its God-ordained position as the epicentre of ministry. Just as Abraham's family was chosen by God to reveal Him to the nations, so, the family in full-time Christian work is called, as a unit, to participate in God's redemption the world. / Thesis (M.A. (Pastoral))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010.

Full-time Employment Ads in TESOL: Identifying What Employers Seek in Potential Hires

Bailey, Caprice L. 07 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Within the professional field of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), it is not unusual for highly qualified instructors to teach several part-time jobs in order to support themselves. Despite advocacy efforts carried out by the international TESOL organization, finding rewarding full-time employment in the United States can be very challenging. In addition, with the current state of the economy and high unemployment, TESOL professionals like others in various fields are seeking stable employment. Although this research will not solve the lack of full-time jobs, the intention is to help job seekers better prepare themselves for today's job market by knowing the skills, knowledge, and personal characteristics that employers are looking for in potential hires. To identify this information, a 12-month review was conducted of three well-established employment websites in an effort to capture advertisements seeking to hire TESOL professionals full-time for ESL related positions in the U.S. A total of 169 job advertisements were collected and reviewed to identify the skills, knowledge, and personal characteristics employers were seeking in qualified individuals. Data from the advertisements were organized into a 42-category coding scheme in an effort to delineate the skills, knowledge, and job characteristics mentioned previously. In addition, a second coding scheme containing 12 categories was created for analyzing the personal characteristics listed in the advertisements Results from this data revealed that employers seek applicants who have knowledge and experience in curriculum development, teacher education, and program administration. Top skills include written and oral communication and basic computer skills. With regards to personal characteristics, employers are most interested in individuals possessing strong interpersonal and teamwork skills. In addition to these skills and qualifications, the data provide important insights concerning the distribution of jobs by job type, degree, institution type, and salary across five regions of the United States.

Adjunct faculty:a boon or burden?

Webb, Donald E, Jr 11 August 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a statistically significant difference in quality of instruction as delivered by full-time and part-time adjunct faculty in community colleges by utilizing data obtained from the Kentucky Community and Technical College (KCTCS) student evaluation of instruction instrument at Southeast Kentucky and Hazard community and technical colleges. The evaluation instrument is used to rate the instructor in the following areas: (a) clarity of course goals; (b) clarity of attendance policy; (c) examinations being a fair measure of progress; (d) clear standards of grading; (e) presentation of course material; (f) clear and to the point explanations of concepts; (g) instructor?s enthusiasm towards subject material; (h) instructor?s concern for student progress in the course; (i) instructor availability before and after class; (j) the instructor?s teaching methods promote interest in the subject area; (k) how much the course has taught the student about the subject; (l) syllabus detailing course requirements and policies was provided and explained; (m) class starts on time and as scheduled; (n) instructor meets the class for the full-time scheduled. SPSS version 14.0 was used in this project. Cross tabulations were performed for each question in the evaluation. Group statistics were computed for the data providing the means, standard deviation, and standard error of the mean for each question. Independent sample tests were also performed, including Levene?s test for equality of variances and T tests for equality of means. The findings of the study indicate that there was no statistically significant difference in student satisfaction in classes taught by adjunct (part-time) instructors and full-time instructors. Discussion of the findings and theoretical and policy implications were offered.
