Commuting patterns in Sweden : A study of commuting, education and functional regions

<p>Eurosclerosis is gripping Europe; one suggested remedy is higher mobility of people. That is what this thesis aims to address: Inter-municipality commuting mobility in Sweden.</p><p>This essay is investigating the Swedish commuting as of 2005. The hypothesis is duly formed as such: High education is significant for the outcome of the commuting decision. The regional pattern of commuting is also considered to a degree. Aggregated data on Swedish commuting between municipalities is used.</p><p>The theory used to investigate this is basic agglomeration theory including the simplest form of gravity model. Theories on utility, human capital and distance friction complement the analysis.</p><p>Concluding comments include: higher education is significant for the commuting decision, and living in more densely populated areas like “big” cities increases chances of people commuting.</p>

<p>The Swedish regions are new phenomena, from the start from the new regionalism which started in the 1980´s. The purpose of the thesis is to analyze Region Skåne and Västra Götalandsregionen to come to a conclusion which model of region they are and want to be by using theories of regional identity and identity of politics and see similarities and differences. My research question is: Which of cultural, administrative and functional region are Region Skåne and Västra Götaland striving to construct?</p><p>   The methods I have used are qualitative text- and content analysis to analyze the regions, by using theories about regional identity and identity of politics. Furthermore, I am using some statistic from SOM-institutet to analyze the regional identity in the regions.</p><p>   The result show that Region Skåne is constructing a cultural region, because of their strong regional identity and that the politicians are using identity of politics to combine the citizens. The citizens feel a strong fellowship and share a common history and culture.</p><p>   However Västra Götalandsregionen is an administrative region, there their regional identity is low and do not have a common history and culture. There the politicians’ focus is on administrative things, as research and communication.  </p>

Essays on the Interplay between Multinational Enterprises and Spatial Economies

This doctoral thesis concerns the interplay between multinational enterprises (MNE) and spatial economies, with an orientation towards the location and spillover effects of inward foreign direct investments (FDI). The thesis consists of four essays that are self-contained studies. The first essay relates to the shift away from FDI in manufacturing to services and examines whether service FDI locates differently from manufacturing FDI. The second essay concerns the relationship between FDI and public incentives and whether investment promotion schemes are useful to attract FDI. The third essay examines the link between human capital and FDI and how different types of skilled workers influence FDI location. Taken together, these three essays examine conditions and factors that determine the location decision of foreign MNEs in the contemporary era of globalisation. The forth essay examines whether labour mobility is a potential source for spillovers from FDI in a spatial context. Although the latter essay does not provide any final answer to whether spillovers actually arise through this channel, it shows that the potentials for an effect to arise are larger in some regions than others because there are very few or no such knowledge spillover agents in many parts of the country. The thesis concludes by discussing the link between FDI and the policy work on regional development, and some avenues for future studies. / <p>QC 20130816</p>
