A secure and comfortable therapeutic atmosphere and its presence and significance in FMT

Jonstang, Marianne Kristine January 2012 (has links)
It has been argued that a secure and comfortable atmosphere is essential in order for a therapeutic or learning environment to be beneficial (Bakken 1998). In Functionally Oriented Music Therapy (FMT) there are arguably certain elements that help create this kind of atmosphere. By looking at the nature of FMT, what these elements might be, and FMT with two different clients, this paper tries to obtain a clearer idea of what creates a secure and comfortable atmosphere in FMT.

FMT, Intrinsic Motivation and Self-esteem

Smith, Christine January 2013 (has links)
This essay presents a brief history of Music Therapy and describes the background, method and thinking behind Functionally-oriented Music Therapy – FMT. The essay includes two case studies describing my work with two clients during the last year of my training to become an FMT therapist. The topics explored are intrinsic (inner) motivation and self-esteem in the context of functional development in school children.  The research question for the essay is to discuss whether Functionally-oriented Music Therapy can assist school children to rediscover their inner motivation and increase their self-esteem.   FMT encourages brain activity through sensory stimulation, movement and play – without verbal instruction, critical evaluation or praise.  The FMT therapist meets the client with knowledge, understanding and unconditional acceptance of his/her present level of physical and mental function and with the intention of creating opportunities for development at every level.  I have found that the work and approach used in FMT can play a vital role in helping school children towards increased inner motivation and self-esteem.

Functionally oriented Music Therapy (FMT) as a method of improving children’s ability to function at school

Jonsson, Ann-Sofie January 2014 (has links)
In a school system with fewer teachers, larger groups, and less resources, functionally oriented music therapy (FMT) could be a useful method of helping children function better at school.  In what way can FMT help improve children’s ability to deal with the challenges facing them at school?  During a project that lasted for 26 weeks, two children from a Swedish preschool class were offered individual FMT once a week.  The group as a whole was divided in two and offered group music (according to the Music in preparation for school (MUISC) programme) every second week.  There was an interview with the teacher, along with an assessment of function for the two individuals, at the beginning and at the end of the project.  The two individuals receiving regular FMT functioned better at school at the end of the project.  FMT could be an effective resource to help improve children’s ability to deal with the challenges facing them at school.
