Pasajes, heterotopías, transculturalidad

de Toro, Alfonso 27 February 2015 (has links) (PDF)

The objective of this dissertation is to analyze The New World Border (1996), by Guillermo Gómez-Peña, and Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (1987), by Gloria Anzaldúa, in order to show how these writers approach identity matters faced by Chicanos in the US, since it is not easy for them to choose between keeping their traditions and living the American way of life. According to the authors, the mere act of crossing the Mexico/US border alone does not necessarily result in crossing the “frontiers” that really separate these immigrants and their offspring from Americans, that is, the cultural and economic barriers. Nevertheless, the Chicanos fight for the right to be heard. Anzaldúa and Gómez-Peña reveal the power of Chicano hybridism, represented in their experiments with language, writing in English and Spanish, prose and verse, thus emphasizing the rupture of frontiers, including that of literary genres. This dissertation addresses the importance of the literature produced by Chicanos, since their writings reveal the extent of Chicano contribution to American cultural life and society

Un pie aquí y otro allá: Translation, Globalization, and Hybridization in the New World (B)Order

Jimenez-bellver, Jorge 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis explores the role of translation in the production and manipulation of identities in the contemporary Americas as exemplified in the work of Guillermo Gómez-Peña. Underscoring the instrumentality of borders vis-à-vis dominant constructions of identity and in connection with questions of language, race, and citizenship, I argue that translation not only functions as an agent of hegemonic superiority and oppression, but also as a locus of plurivocity and hybridization. Drawing from the concepts “continuous variation” (Deleuze and Guattari [1987] 2004), “coloniality of power” (Mignolo 2000), and “hybridization” (García-Canclini 1995), I discuss the connection of translation with three main topics: monolingualism, globalization, and racial hybridity. First, I discuss the influence that the dominant ideology of the nation-state has exerted on the way translation has been conceptualized since translation studies emerged as a field. Then I turn to colonial legacies in the Americas and the role of translation in situations of language hegemony as shaped by forces of assimilation and diversification. Finally, I look at translation as a crucial agent for the production and legitimization of Latin American identity throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Viewing translation as a performative and transformative activity, I critique a number of contemporary approaches to translation and I point to new understandings of translation as a cluster concept (Tymoczko 2007) in order to expand translation theory and practice beyond Western paradigms.

Figuras de la hibridez: Carlos Fuentes, Guillermo Gómez Peña, Gloria Anzaldúa y Alberto Kurapel

de Toro, Alfonso 24 February 2015 (has links) (PDF)

PSEUDOLOGY: LYING IN ART AND CULTURE

Prus, Benjamin Peter Fodden 16 November 2017 (has links)
This dissertation draws upon Western literature in critical theory, aesthetics, art theory, and art history to explore how lying can foster aesthetic experience and the sociopolitical effects of this experience. It nominates the idea of pseudology—lying as an art—and outlines its distinguishing features from the dawn of postmodernism to contemporary practices. This study demonstrates an analysis of lying premised on an understanding of aesthetics as caught up in the wider issues of public pedagogy and everyday politics. Taking as case studies specific works of Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, VALIE EXPORT, and Carol Duncan, this dissertation argues for the narrative framing of artwork as paramount for its reception. As well, by examining the artistic mystifications of Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Coco Fusco, Joshua Schwebel, and Iris Häussler, this dissertation analyzes the use of pseudology in institutional critique. The study finds that perfidious practices can point to the importance of the relational boundary between what is real/unreal, highlight the social construction of this boundary’s aesthetic aspects, and reveal the ways in which each of us are active in the construction of a shared reality. Ultimately, our active framing of everyday life and the affective nature of our construction of a shared reality has been problematized by a contemporary prevalence of lying in the realms of public culture and politics. Pseudology reveals the power of narrative framing. The pseudological artworks discussed here expose, as models for the political aesthetic of lying, the need to debate the very tenets of reality constantly and continually—an essential civic action in the ethical, communal relationships of a democracy. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / An analysis of the use of lying as an artistic technique.
