We will research the pretentions of royal and ecclesiastical agents to convert and integrate the bailadeiras to a Christian project of colonization, from the decrees issued in the five provincial councils of Goa (made in the chronological cut above), of the legislation contained in the ?Book of the Father of the Christians?, from the royal determinations and from the viceroys of the State of India. We will investigate how the interdependence of the political and religious power favored the issuance of decrees that aimed at homogenizing the local societies, precisely the bailadeiras and the hindu widows from a Christian discipline. / A presente disserta??o busca analisar as iniciativas de coer??o ? convers?o de vi?vas hindus e bailadeiras em Goa, entre 1567 a 1606. Pesquisaremos as pretens?es dos agentes r?gios e eclesi?sticos em converter e integrar as bailadeiras a um projeto crist?o de coloniza??o, a partir dos decretos emitidos nos cinco conc?lios provinciais de Goa (realizados no recorte cronol?gico supracitado), da legisla??o contida no ?Livro do Pai dos Crist?os?, das determina??es r?gias e dos vice-reis do Estado da ?ndia. Investigaremos assim, como a interdepend?ncia do poder pol?tico e religioso favoreceu a emiss?o de decretos que visavam homogeneizar as sociedades locais, precisamente bailadeiras e as vi?vas hindus, a partir de uma disciplina crist?.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The aim of this research is to consider the history of the Portuguese Empire in the Orient during the XVI century by the ecclesiastical activity of D. Gaspar de Leão (1557-1576), the first archbishop of Goa. It focuses on the possible contradictions between the role played by this cleric and the tridentine reformation projects. Therefore, a series of writings by D. Gaspar de Leão and fisher documentation must be used as analytical tools. Specially, his book Desengano de Perdidos (1573) and the problems involving its censorship and prohibition by the Portuguese inquisition (1581) receive a particular attention / Este estudo visa refletir sobre a atuação do império português no Oriente no século XVI, por meio da atuação eclesiástica do primeiro arcebispo de Goa, D. Gaspar de Leão (1557-1576). Busca-se tratar das possíveis contradições, que possam ou não existir, entre ação eclesiástica desse arcebispo e o projeto reformador tridentino. Para isso, utiliza-se como instrumentos de análise, uma série de escritos do autor e demais documentos do contexto, com enfoque mais aprofundado na obra Desengano de Perdidos (1573) e a problemática que envolve sua censura e proibição pela inquisição portuguesa (1581) / Mestre em História

This is an analysis of Goan identity issues in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries using unconventional sources such as novels, short stories, plays, pamphlets, periodical articles,and internet newspapers. The importance of using literature in this analysis is to present how Goans perceive themselves rather than how the government, the tourist industry, or tourists perceive them. Also included is a discussion of post-colonial issues and how they define Goan identity. Chapters include “Goan Identity: A Concept in Transition,” “Goan Identity: Defined by Language,” and “Goan Identity: The Ancestral Home and Expatriates.” The conclusion is that by making Konkani the official state language, Goans have developed a dual Goan/Indian identity. In addition, as the Goan Diaspora becomes more widespread, Goans continue to define themselves with the concept of building or returning to the ancestral home.
