LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF BIOMASS HARVESTING FOR ON-FARM BIOFUEL PRODUCTION

Hagan, Michael A 01 January 2015 (has links)
Understanding the energy input and emissions resulting from the development of biofuels is important to quantify the overall benefit of the biofuel. As part of the On-Farm Biomass Processing project, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted on the process to harvest and transport agricultural crop residues ready for processing into biofuel. A Microsoft Excel model was developed that inventories the entire life cycle of the process, including incorporation of stochastic analysis within the model. The LCA results of the agricultural equipment manufacture are presented, along with the results of each step of the process, including fertilizer addition, single pass harvest, double pass harvest, and transport from the field to processing facility. Various methods of analyzing co-products are also presented for the single pass harvesting step, in which comparisons between market based, mass based and process-purpose based allocation methods are reviewed. The process-purpose based method of fuel consumption difference between combine operation in conventional harvest versus single pass harvest is determined to be the most realistic of the process. A detailed comparison of the energy and emission differences between single pass and double pass harvesting is given, along with the total LCA results of harvesting and transporting the biomass.

Optimization of anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge using bio-chemical substrates

Madondo, Nhlanganiso Ivan January 2018 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Masters of Engineering: Chemical Engineering, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2018. / The anaerobic process is increasingly becoming a subject for many as it reduces greenhouse gas emissions and recovers carbon dioxide energy as methane. Even though these benefits are attainable, proper control and design of the process variables has to be done in order to optimize the system productivity and improve stability. The aim of this research was to optimize methane and biogas yields on the anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge using bio-chemical substrates as co-substrates. The first objective was to find the bio-chemical substrate that will generate the highest biogas and methane yields. The anaerobic digestion of these substrates was operated using 6 L digesters at 37.5℃. The substrate which generated the highest biogas and methane yield in the first batch experiment was then used for the second batch test. The objective was to optimize the anaerobic conditions (substrate to inoculum ratio, co-substrate concentration and temperature) in-order to optimize the biogas and methane yields. The second batch test was achieved using the conventional One-Factor-At-A-Time (OFAT) and the Design of Experiment (DOE) methods. Final analysis showed that the bio-chemical substrates could be substrates of interest to biogas generators. Amongst the substrates tested in the first batch experiment glycerol (Oleo-Chemical Product waste) generated the highest methane and biogas yields of 0.71 and 0.93 L. (g volatile solids added)-1, respectively. It was believed that glycerol contains significant amount of other organic substances such as lipids that have higher energy content than the other bio-chemical substrates, thus generating larger biogas and methane yields. Moreover, digestion of sewage sludge alone produced biogas yields of 0.19 L /g VS and 0.33 L/g COD, and methane yields of 0.16 L/g VS and 0.28 L/g COD. Generally, co-digestion yields were higher than digestion yields of sewage alone. Using the OFAT method the results of the second batch test on glycerol demonstrated highest amounts of volatile solids (VS) reduction, chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction, biogas yield and methane yield of 99.7%, 100%, 0.94 L (g VS added)-1 and 0.75 L (g VS added)-1 at a temperature, substrate to inoculum ratio and glycerol volume of 50℃, 1 (on VS basis) and 10 mL, respectively. Above 22 mL and substrate to inoculum ratio of 1, the process was inhibited. The DOE results suggested that the highest methane and biogas yields were 0.75 and 0.94 L (g VS added)-1, respectively. These results were similar to the OFAT results, thus the DOE software may be used to define the biogas and methane yields equations for glycerol. In conclusion, anaerobic co-digestion of bio-chemical substrates as co-substrates on sewage sludge was successfully applied to optimize methane and biogas yields. / M

Energy Use And Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Residential Neighborhoods In The Southwest: A Built Environment Life-Cycle Assessment

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: In recent years environmental life-cycle assessments (LCA) have been increasingly used to support planning and development of sustainable infrastructure. This study demonstrates the application of LCA to estimate embedded energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to materials manufacturing and construction processes for low and high density single-family neighborhoods typically found in the Southwest. The LCA analysis presented in this study includes the assessment of more than 8,500 single family detached units, and 130 miles of related roadway infrastructure. The study estimates embedded and GHG emissions as a function of building size (1,500 - 3000 square feet), number of stories (1 or 2), and exterior wall material composition (stucco, brick, block, wood), roof material composition (clay tile, cement tile, asphalt shingles, built up), and as a function of roadway typology per mile (asphalt local residential roads, collectors, arterials). While a hybrid economic input-out life-cycle assessment is applied to estimate the energy and GHG emissions impacts of the residential units, the PaLATE tool is applied to determine the environmental effects of pavements and roads. The results indicate that low density single family neighborhoods are 2 - 2.5 X more energy and GHG intensive, per residential dwelling (unit) built, than high density residential neighborhoods. This relationship holds regardless of whether the functional unit is per acre or per capita. The results also indicate that a typical low density neighborhood (less than 2 dwellings per acre) requires 78 percent more energy and resource in roadway infrastructure per residential unit than a traditional small lot high density (more than 6 dwelling per acre). Also, this study shows that new master planned communities tend to be more energy intensive than traditional non master planned residential developments. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.U.E.P. Greehouse Gas Simulations in Munich : Investigation of Wind Averaging Techniques for analysis of column measurements (XCO2) using CFD

Pawa, Diptesh January 2018 (has links)
The underlying objective of this thesis was to perform GHG simulation studies to predict the dispersion and transport of greenhouse gases emitted from a thermal power plant in order to assess the extent of dangerous living environment for those surrounding it in case of an unforeseen calamity. The research carried out during this thesis was to investigate the method of wind averaging techniques to analyse column measurements (XCO2). The reason for adopting this method of analysis was to correlate the physical aspect of wind data to average over a certain period of time wherein the amount of XCO2 (in ppm) observed displays values greater than the background concentration. CFD simulations were performed using the open source code, OpenFOAM, and steady RANS models modified with turbulence boundary conditions for the urban environment case with previously validated simulation studies carried out for the same region in Munich, Germany. Initial results performed during the testing stage indicated that maximum average XCO2 value (in ppm) was recorded at the lowest value of mean wind speed and at a more downwind location of the measurement site. The results obtained from simulation studies on comparison with experimental values (arithmetic average) also suggest that for the same time interval, the difference in values for similar wind conditions as mentioned before makes this technique a more favourable choice for comparison and verification at another time instant.  There have been recent developments in GHG simulation based studies and however the current method does represent certain drawbacks, an insight into performing averaging analysis at time intervals representing peak XCO2 moments could be demonstrated which can also help in reducing the overall number of simulations as well as provide information with respect to mitigation measures based on transport and diffusion behavior.

Emissão de metano por bovinos sob níveis de oferta de forragem em pastagem nativa do Bioma Pampa / Methane emissions by cattle under herbage allowance levels in Pampa Biome grassland

Cezimbra, Ian Machado January 2015 (has links)
The study was conducted at the EEA-UFRGS, in Eldorado do Sul/ RS, from Dec/2011 to Nov/2013 in order to study the effect of the structure and dry matter intake in methane emissions and relate that to animal performance in native grassland. The treatments consisted of the following forage allowance levels: 4, 8, 8:12, 12 and16 kg DM / 100 kg live weight (LW), or % LW. The animal testers were crossbred heifers with 24 months of age and 223 ± 24 kg in 2012 and 12 months and 274 ± 17 kg in 2013 when the entry of animals in the experimental protocol. The variables to describe the pasture structure were: herbage mass, herbage accumulation rate, pasture height and frequency of tussocks. For the dry matter intake evaluation, it was used the technique of nalkanes technique based on the double alkane teory. Methane emissions were measured by the sulfur hexafluoride tracer technique. The experimental design was a randomized block design with two replications (paddocks) was used. The 4 and 8% LW herbage allowance treatments emited less CH4/animal than 16, 12 and 12.8% LW. The models showed that the variability of the emission is explained in a greater proportion, the set of pasture structure (R2 = 0,53), and that the relationship between emission of methane emission and dry matter intake was highly significant (P <0.001). On the other hand, consumption explained a smaller amount of the data variance (R2 = 0.20). Annuall methane emission was determined by changes in herbage consumption and sward structure, mainly herbage accumulation rate. With low herbage accumulation rate, especially in winter, there was a greater, waste of energy for methanogenesis. There was an inverse relationship between the amount of methane emitted per kg dry matter intake as a function of daily dry matter consumption. Increasing herbage allowance to moderate grazing intensity levels resulted in a greater LW gain and also higher CH4 emission per animal. However, high to moderate herbage allowance tratments (16, 12 and 8-12) emited less methane per area and per kg of LW produced. Managing native grasslands under moderate levels of herbage allowance can creat canopy strutures that favor both consumption and herbage accumulation rate, and also mitigate beff cattle methane emissions per kg of DM, per area and per kg LW produced.

Quantifying the energy consumption of the water use cycle

Trujillo, Iliana Cardenes January 2017 (has links)
The management and delivery of water and wastewater consume significant amounts of energy, mostly in the form of electricity. With increasing populations, climate change, water quality issues and increasing energy prices, it is more important than ever to understand energy consumption patterns. Energy usually represents the largest operational cost in water utilities around the world, yet there is limited work aiming to quantify the specific relationship between water and its associated energy, and understand its implications for future decision-making. This thesis presents variousmethodological approachesto quantify and understand energy use in water infrastructure systems, as well as how to incorporate them in decision-making processes. The main hypotheses are as follows: firstly, a detailed understanding of the use of energy in water infrastructure systems can facilitate more efficient and sustainable water infrastructure systems and, secondly, that incorporating energy into planning for water and wastewater resources can help understand the impacts of decisions and establish trade-offs between actions. To test these hypotheses, the thesis presents an analytical approach to various areas. Firstly, it identifies, maps and quantifies the energy consumption patterns within a water infrastructure system. This is then used to identify inefficiencies and areas of potential energy saving. Secondly, it incorporates detailed energy costs into short and long-term water resources management and planning. Thirdly, it evaluates trade-offs between energy costs and changing effluent quality regulations in wastewater resources. The Thames River basin, in the south-east of England, is used as a case study to illustrate the approach. The results demonstrate that a systematic approach to the quantification of energy use in a water infrastructure system can identify areas of inefficiencies that can be used to make decisions with regards to infrastructure planning. For example, water systems have significant geo-spatial variations in energy consumption patterns that can be addressed specifically to reduce negative trade-offs. The results also show that incorporating detailed energy information into long-term water resources planning can alter the choices made in water supply options, by providing more complete information. Furthermore, methodologically, they show how several methodological approaches can be used to support more complete decision-making in water utilities to reduce short and long-term costs. In this particular case study, the results show that there are important differences in energy consumption by region, and significant differences in the seasonal and energy patterns of water infrastructure systems. For example, water treatment was shown to be the largest consumer of energy within the whole system, compared with pumping or wastewater treatment; but wastewater treatment energy consumption was shown to be the fastest growing over time due to changes in water quality regulatory frameworks. The results show that more stringent effluent standards could result in at least a doubling of electricity consumption and an increase of between 1.29 and 2.30 additional million tonnes of CO2 a year from treating wastewater in large works in the UK. These are projected to continue to increase if the decarbonisation of the electricity grid does not occur fast enough. Finally, the thesis also shows that daily energy consumption can be reduced by up to 18% by optimally routing water through a water network. optimization of water networks, and that a change in discount rates could change the daily operating costs by 19%, that in turn leads to a resulting different set of optimal investment options in a water supply network.

Optionally for silage production, the intercrop of corn with the marandugrass and pigeon pea can increase the amount of produced silage, and this best quality. The consortium of grasses and legumes can be an interesting strategy to increase the stocks of C and N and the amount forage for pastures grown in succession, which will result in straw for mulching in no-tillage system. In succession to summer intercrop, oats becomes an important option, especially the possibility of overseeded, making it possible its cultivation by farmers who do not have access to specific seeders for small seeds.
