This thesis is a study of the ways in which the fear of death, and its natural consequence, the desire for immortality, is manifested in the major characters of three post-Romantic works. In each case, the fear of death is unconscious, and has to "be interpreted from the dreams and illusions of the characters, which may not appear to have any immediate connection with death or immortality. In Madame Bovary, the blind man is the symbolic antithesis of Emma's dreams of finding a means of transcendence within the world itself. He is the embodiment of the horrifying vision of biological process that lies at the heart of her flight from reality. The pharmacist, Homais, is also considered to be attempting to establish a symbolic form of immortality for himself through the glorification of his reputation and his sentimental belief in scientific progress. In Niels Lyhne, the young hero attempts to free himself from the romantic influences of his childhood by proclaiming a new philosophy that is based, on atheism. However, his temperamental attachment to the idea of "infinity", and his inability to accept the physical nature of human beings betray his unconscious desire for a state of being in which he will be invulnerable to the forces of aging and death. In John Gabriel Borkman the three major characters attempt to find a means of denying the inevitability of their approaching deaths. Borkman tries to gain control over the forces of life through the exercise of power and through an identification with rocks and metal that seem to hold the promise of conferring their immutability onto him. Borkman's wife wants her son to devote his life to the glorification of the name of Borkman, that her husband has dishonoured. She hopes that her idealized self-image will live on"in the "monument" that Erhart will "erect" to the family name. Ella Rentheim, her sister, also plans to use Erhart for the establishment of a symbolic form of immortality, by trying to persuade him to adopt her family name after she has died. The method of this thesis could be applied to works from any age of literature, but I have chosen the nineteenth century because of the particular social and intellectual influences that existed in Europe after the Enlightenment'. All the artistic movements of the nineteenth century were conditioned by the legacy of metaphysical uncertainty that the religious skepticism of the Age of Reason had bequeathed to the future. In these three works, the characters devote the same religious fervour to the worldly objects of their desires as, formerly, man had devoted to God. Partimos da idéia de que história e literatura são disciplinas distintas, porém com uma série de semelhanças que legitimam ambas a elaborarem o passado, escrevendo-o e dessa forma interpretando-o. Nesse romance, García Márquez abordou o poder institucional em sua manifestação autoritária; a personagem principal foi inspirada nos ditadores latino americanos e a ambientação da narrativa é a América Latina. Buscamos em nossa leitura observar a construção da história recente de nosso continente; tentamos ler as propostas de interpretação histórica que o romance nos incita a fazer. Nossa preocupação maior foi mostrar que o poder centrado inicialmente na personagem do patriarca é extremamente complexo e apresenta-se de diversas formas, manifestando-se em muitas personagens. O patriarca seria uma alegoria do poder na América Latina, assim como a representação ora de uma individualidade, ora de uma estrutura desse mesmo poder / Abstract: This thesis has the purpose of analysing the novel El Otono del Patriarca, by Gabriel García Marquez, attempting to its considerations about the writing of history. Even considerating history and literature as distinct disciplines, we can say that several similarities legitimize both to rebuild the past, by the use of words, so giving it an interpretation. In this novel, García Marquez depicted the institutional might in its dictatorial manifestation; the main character was inspired in the latin american dictators and the scenery is Latin America. We tried to observe in our reading the construction of the recent history of our continent; we tried to pick up the proposals of history interpretations raised by the book. The main concern was to show that the power, in the beginning centralized in the character of the patriarch, is highly complex and it is presented in many ways, having repercutions in many other characters. En este primer volumen se incluye toda la documentación original del primer volumen original de la colección con el agregado del texto relativo a las memorias de Juan Bautista Túpac Amaru, que antes se incluía en el volumen tercero.

Este es el segundo de siete volúmenes de la obra La rebelión de Túpac Amaru II, la cual forma parte de la “Nueva Colección Documental de la Independencia del Perú”, una iniciativa para celebrar el Bicentenario de la Independencia del Perú. The main subject of the presented work is the question of power within the context of sociological theory, and in relation to the mechanism of psychological mimesis and the phenomenon of the sacred. Our starting point is René Girard's mimetic theory, which systematizes the relationship between the mechanism of psychological mimesis and the sacred - in the light of the phenomenon of violence. We, firstly, present Girard's mimetic theory, explicate its main concepts, and situate all into a broader context. Further, we critically examine Girard's theoretical scheme and come to the conclusion that his theoretical and conceptual framework calls for a revision, if it is to be utilized within the context of sociology and social theory. Consequently, we try to "sociologize" Girard's thinking. First, we position his line of thought into the wider sociological context, and then examine his theory in the light of thinking of two classical sociologists, Gabriel Tarde and Émile Durkheim. We then project this examination into a theoretical and conceptual synthesis on the basis of which we formulate our own conceptual scheme, which is based on the assumption of psychological mimesis as an anthropological constant, and which overcomes the main shortcomings of Girard's theoretical framework.
