Modeling Stochastic Processes in Gamma-Ray Imaging Detectors and Evaluation of a Multi-Anode PMT Scintillation Camera for Use with Maximum-Likelihood Estimation Methods

Maximum-likelihood estimation or other probabilistic estimation methods are underused in many areas of applied gamma-ray imaging, particularly in biomedicine. In this work, we show how to use our understanding of stochastic processes in a scintillation camera and their effect on signal formation to better estimate gamma-ray interaction parameters such as interaction position or energy.To apply statistical estimation methods, we need an accurate description of the signal statistics as a function of the parameters to be estimated. First, we develop a probability model of the signals conditioned on the parameters to be estimated by carefully examining the signal generation process. Subsequently, the likelihood model is calibrated by measuring signal statistics for an ensemble of events as a function of the estimate parameters.In this work, we investigate the application of ML-estimation methods for three topics. First, we design, build, and evaluate a scintillation camera based on a multi-anode PMT readout for use with ML-estimation techniques. Next, we develop methods for calibrating the response statistics of a thick-detector gamma camera as a function of interaction depth. Finally, we demonstrate the use of ML estimation with a modified clinical Anger camera.

Development of a semi-autonomous directional and spectroscopic radiation detection mobile platform

This thesis presents a method for a small, inexpensive mobile robot equipped with a single high resolution scintillation detector to quickly survey an area and convey information about local sources of gamma radiation to a remote human operator. This is achieved by surrounding the detector with a lead sheath that blocks all gamma rays except those incident along the detector???s axial direction. A horizontal scan is performed by rotating the detector and a directional profile of gamma radiation is constructed. In addition a visual panorama of the local area is assembled using a camera mounted on the detector. A plot of the detector signal versus angle is then overlaid on top of the visual panorama and visible peaks clearly indicate the direction of local gamma radiation sources. Moreover, measuring the energy spectrum of gamma rays in each direction produces a 2D count frequency histogram where distinct peaks indicate the energy and direction of local gamma ray sources allowing the identification of different radio-isotopes.

How- ever, the detector quality is affected by material imperfections, such as crystal defects and impurities. It results into forming of deep levels which act as re- combination and trapping centers. Then, the accumulated space charge at these deep levels influences electric and spectroscopic properties of the detector. In the end it may result in the polarization effect, when the electric field is localized in vicinity of one contact and detection properties are decreased. This thesis reports a complex study of a detector band structure by various meth- ods with focus on differences between CdTe, CdZnTe, CdTeSe and CdZnTeSe. The electro-optic Pockels effect is used to investigate the influence of the illumi- nation in range 900 − 1800 nm on the inner electric field. Model based pulse shaping for detection of gamma rays

To analyse drill samples in a mine, a scanner that uses a gamma ray detector can be used. The scanner can analyse the drill sample to quickly see the elements present in the sample without destroying it. To improve the performance of the scanner, the electric signal from the detector needs to be less noisy, and different pulse shaping methods, filters and smoothers can be used on the sampled data to achieve an improved performance. In this master thesis, the electric noise model of the electronics around the detector was modeled, and analysed. Different pulse shaping method, filters and smoothers was also tested to see which method gave the best performance in FWHM sense. The Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) is the energy resolution of a detector, and is defined as the full width of a photopeak at the half maximum. The noise model of the schematic for the preamplifier was made by hand with support from MATLAB. The resulting noise model was compared between MATLAB and LTspice, and the conclusion is that the JFET is the main contributor of the significant noise, contributing to 98 % of the total noise at 10 GHz. The adopted filters and pulse shaping method are, matched filter, custom filter, CR-RC shaping, mean filter, median filter and clustering. The results from the tests indicated that custom filter with a FWHM of 1.96 keV and CR-RC with a FWHM of 1.67 keV shaping were more accurate than the matched filter with the FWHM of 5.1 keV. But the results also showed that it is important to take into account the waveform variance, due to inherent properties in the detector, with this consideration the FWHM of CR-RC shaper was improved from 2.29 keV to 1.67 keV. The clustering method was the most promising method but due to time constraints this method was never fully tested and no FWHM value was achieved.
