Designing a resource guide for horticultural therapy programs at botanical gardens and arboreta

Parsons, Ann Bernardene January 1985 (has links)
Outreach programs in horticultural therapy at botanical gardens and arboreta are valuable resources to the community and to ongoing HT programs in nursing homes, special education classes, hospitals, psychiatric facilities, and other institutions and agencies. These outreach programs furnish written materials, plants, and staff expertise for existing programs and help establish new programs. Seminars and conferences are held providing information on and training in HT. There are several outreach HT programs at gardens and arboreta throughout the United States and abroad. However, currently there is very little information available for developing this type of program. This thesis provides a resource guide describing HT and how it can be incorporated into a botanical garden or arboretum. Resources from The Holden Arboretum in Ohio, Chicago Botanic Garden in Illinois, and North Carolina Botanical Garden, survey information, and literature from existing programs have been compiled suggesting possible procedures to follow in implementing a program. A slide presentation has been developed which illustrates the benefits of HT and describes the outreach HT program at Holden. / M.S.

Social performance of communal sky garden in a dense urban city -- Hong Kong

Chan, Shun-tim, 陳順甜 January 2013 (has links)
As a result of rapid proliferation of urbanization, there is an insufficient supply of green spaces in dense urban city while the population and living density are both very high. This insufficiency associates with a number of problems on both individual and community. Communal sky garden (CSG) thus turns into an alternative solution as a co-existence between building and vegetation within the same plot of land for the enjoyment of the occupants of the respective development. This study aims at examining the design elements which affect the social performance of CSG for high rise buildings in dense city. There are totally 25 number of residential developments which have the provision of CSG since the issuance of Joint Practice Note No.1 and No.2 in 2001. Eight of them have been selected for the Study. The sky garden design of these developments has been examined and analyzed from different perspectives which include building controls, on-site measurements and observations, questionnaire survey and interviews. Views from public, developers and design professional have also been collected to generate a holistic review on such provision. Several features which are unique to CSG has been identified. The most apparent one is the provision couples with the refuge floor while the layout is dictated by the typical floor plate. It thus imposes limitations on the design and the schedule of accommodations. Also, based on the design layout and characteristics, the eight selected ases have been classified and categorized into four CSG typologies, namely (i) typical type; (ii) linked-up type; (iii) duplex type; and (iv) balcony type. These typologies facilitate the review and analysis of the current provision of CSG. The findings from fieldworks have exhibited that people’s perception on CSG is positive. Its provision is highly supported and appreciated nevertheless of their infrequent use rate. When designing CSG, the considerations are slightly different from those designed at street or ground floor level. Greening is still considered as important which has been validated in the current Study; open views from CSG and its tranquil environment which are unique to the provision constitute the primary concerns of users when consider visiting the garden. These conditions offer an alternative space for residents of the respective development to relax and relieve stress. However, the role of CSG cannot be overemphasized; it, in fact, is complementary to the open space system by providing a garden at “doorstep” for residents particularly for those developments lacking competing facilities such as podium garden and nearby open space. Hence, the provision is not only environmentally sustainable, but also socially sustainable in terms of improving physical health and well-being of residents and their quality of life. This Study also offers a significant reference for the comprehensive design and in-depth understanding on the value and role of CSG in the built environment especially for high rise residential buildings in dense city. The collected findings and the deliverables provide a good reference in future CSG provision in Hong Kong. / published_or_final_version / Architecture / Doctoral / Doctor of Philosophy

Městská komunitní zahrada Smetanka v letech 2014-2017: důvody k zahradničení, konflikt a zánik / Urban community garden "Smetanka" in years 2014-2017: reasons to gardening, a conflict and the over

Beran, David January 2019 (has links)
This thesis is based upon the phenomenon known as urban community gardening, and examines it with regards to conflicts within an intended environment. The theoretical section is based on a school of thought that holds nature as something that exists in both science and humanities, and which can be observed within the social world. As opposed to nature and society being divided, this part will address the term 'socionature', which comprises a current post-anthropocentric stream of humanities and social sciences. Essentially it stays on the theory of conflicts. The research posits answers to the question of how gardeners justify and reasonably support their activities at an urban community garden called "Smetanka garden" in Vinohrady, Prague. Two of the outcomes were: the cultivation of strong neighbourly relations; and encouragement of recreational family outings. The Smetanka garden was closed in 2017. The thesis sees the conflict that occurred around the closure as a socionatural conflict. One question is, what were the arguments for closing the garden? The main argument stated that the land should be used for construction of sports facilities to serve the schools nearby. Furthermore, the community garden was only meant to be temporarily from the beginning. Proponents maintained that the garden...

Halophytes and their potential as landscape plants

Schaefer, Christina Maria, 1959- January 1988 (has links)
Based upon literature search, field investigation, examination of the halophyte collection at the Environmental Research Laboratory in Tucson, Arizona, and an expert survey, 97 salt-tolerant plants have been identified for the use as landscape plants. The plants were screened at salinity levels between 5 and 40 ppt which are critical for plant survival. The globally gathered data revealed information about landscape criteria, such as aesthetic value, climate amelioration, soil stabilization, color, form and drought tolerance, which were organized into architectural, engineering and design categories. These landscape halophytes range from herbaceous ground covers to woody trees. The data were filed in a computer data base, including detailed information about the description and performance of every plant, habitat requirements, maintenance, landscape values and economic uses. The data base, which is continually up-dated, is a search-type, which functions as an information storage system and is designed to provide plant selection by needed characteristics or intended use.

The Natural Embroidery of Thomas Southerne's Oroonoko

Hancock, Sarah Rose 17 May 2016 (has links)
In this thesis, I plan to investigate the role of the landscape in Thomas Southerne's play Oroonoko. Most scholarship on Oroonoko focuses on the relationship between Southerthne's play and Aphra Behn's novella of the same name. In particular, the scholarly conversation has focused on the way that Southerne white-washed Aphra Behn's character Imoininda. While this distinction is notable, my research, instead, will focus on the way these bodies—both white and black, colonizer and colonized—are framed by 18th century gardening rhetoric. This rhetoric provided naturally conceived tools for nurturing these bodies. I plan to argue that the language of the natural world used in the play demonstrates the role of landscape in the formation of British national identity. / McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts; / English / MA; / Thesis;
