Thermomechanical Postbuckling of Geometrically Imperfect Anisotropic Flat and Doubly Curved Sandwich Panels

Hause, Terry J. 27 April 1998 (has links)
Sandwich structures constitute basic components of advanced supersonic/hypersonic flight and launch vehicles. These advanced flight vehicles operate in hostile environments consisting of high temperature, moisture, and pressure fields. As a result, these structures are exposed to large lateral pressures, large compressive edge loads, and high temperature gradients which can create large stresses and strains within the structure and can produce the instability of the structure. This creates the need for a better understanding of the behavior of these structures under these complex loading conditions. Moreover, a better understanding of the load carrying capacity of sandwich structures constitutes an essential step towards a more rational design and exploitation of these constructions. In order to address these issues, a comprehensive geometrically non-linear theory of doubly curved sandwich structures constructed of anisotropic laminated face sheets with an orthotropic core under various loadings for simply supported edge conditions is developed. The effects of the radii of curvature, initial geometric imperfections, pressure, uniaxial compressive edge loads, biaxial edge loading consisting of compressive/tensile edge loads, and thermal loads will be analyzed. The effect of the structural tailoring of the facesheets upon the load carrying capacity of the structure under these various loading conditions are analyzed. In addition, the movability/immovability of the unloaded edges and the end-shortening are examined. To pursue this study, two different formulations of the theory are developed. One of these formulations is referred to as the mixed formulation, While the second formulation is referred to as the displacement formulation. Several results are presented encompassing buckling, postbuckling, and stress/strain analysis in conjunction with the application of the structural tailoring technique. The great effects of this technique are explored. Moreover, comparisons with the available theoretical and experimental results are presented and good agreements are reported. / Ph. D.

Nonlinear Finite Element Analyses of the End Web Crippling Strength of W-Shape Steel Beams

Marcano, Jose Abigail 16 September 2002 (has links)
The 1999 AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings establishes two design equations for the web crippling limit state at the supports. However, investigators have suggested that the basis of these equations, which is based on an assumed collapse mechanism, is conservative especially for long bearing lengths. Most of the experimental studies conducted to validate those formulas have considered short span lengths and relatively small bearing-to-depth ratios. Therefore, a further investigation of the web crippling capacity of W-shape steel beams for larger span lengths and larger bearing-to-length ratios was undertaken. The primary objective of this study is to analytically investigate the web crippling strength of W-shape steel beams for large bearing-to-depth ratios on large span beams, and to compare the results with the 1999 AISC LRFD web crippling design equation (K1-5b). The web crippling strength of W-shape steel beams was investigated by means of the finite element technique. The commercial finite element package ANSYS 6.0 was used to model the steel beams. Material nonlinearities, large deformation effects and initial geometric imperfections were taken into account in the finite element models. The validation results shown that the finite element models closely predicted the ultimate load and web crippling failure mode shape of the tested beams. Conclusions based on the predictions of the finite element analyses and the current 1999 AISC end web crippling design equation (K1-5b) are presented in the study. / Master of Science

Effect of Geometric Imperfections (Wrinkles) on the Circumferential Strength of a Composite Polymer Liner for Pressure Pipes

Ampiah, Nancy 09 October 2008 (has links)
The relining of deteriorated gravity flow and pressure pipes with polymeric liners is now popular practice. In the water industry, health concerns and challenges associated with re-opening water services in a lined small diameter pipe have limited the use of liners. Sanexen Environmental Services Inc. in Montreal, Canada, manufactures a cured-in-place liner system which can restore water service connections after lining from within the pipe, using a remote controlled robot. The installation of the liner within cast iron water pipes can result in the formation of geometric imperfections (wrinkles) as the external diameter of the liner often exceeds the internal diameter of the host pipe. Previous studies have suggested that the wrinkles have a detrimental effect on the structural performance of the liner. In this study, experimental and analytical investigations were conducted to evaluate further the effect of the wrinkles on the circumferential (hoop) strength of the liner. The experimental investigation involved testing 33-25 mm wide ring samples of the liner with and without wrinkles, using the split-disk test method which is defined by ASTM Standard D2290. The laboratory tests were conducted to examine the effects on the response of the liner of loading rate, cyclic loading, and presence of different wrinkle configurations. A series of two-tailed Mann-Whitney statistical tests were conducted on the obtained test data. The analytical investigation examined the behavior of two of the three types of wrinkles observed in the liner using finite element models. The results from the models were evaluated using the experimental results. This study confirmed that the wrinkles were a source of weakness in the liner as failure was initiated at the wrinkle in all the test samples. It also showed that their presence may or may not result in a reduction in the ultimate hoop tensile capacity of the liner depending on wrinkle pattern. The loading rate had no significant effect on the first cracking load of the resin within the wrinkle. However, lower ultimate hoop tensile capacities were observed at very slow loading rates. Under the 50-year cyclic loading, the resin within the wrinkle was susceptible to cracking while the jackets of the wrinkle remained intact. / Thesis (Master, Civil Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2008-09-16 22:38:10.234

Análise de alguns aspectos no estudo de torres estaiadas / Analysis of different aspects to be taken into account in the study of guyed masts

Puglia, Vicente Bergamini January 2009 (has links)
The analysis of frames guyed masts are widely used and are the focus of attention in the research of modern engineering, presenting a challenge in the evaluation of excitations that act on them, and determining the responses of the component elements. To undertake a study to that effect, in this essay is made the evaluation of a structural truss of guyed masts, located at the University of Passo Fundo. This tower has equipments that record wind speeds in a continuous manner, being able to determine data about TS and EPS storms in the existing records. It also determines the natural frequencies of vibration as a dynamic characteristic of the tower. Using the above information, structural models of different levels of complexity were created, being calibrated using the available data. The excitement caused by storms was created by comparing the excitation spectra classics available in the technical literature and the experimental records of actual storms available. Also discussed was an amount subject to compression of the tower where its cross section is a corner of tabs equal. Was determined from the load profile given the collapse of physical and geometric nonlinearities embedded in it. Individual attention was given to the study of the influence of imperfections, using it to expressions proposed by the specialized literature and the framework of imperfection that was extracted from three-dimensional scanning of an actual amount.

Análise numérica de perfis de aço formados a frio comprimidos considerando imperfeições geométricas iniciais / Numerical analysis of compressed cold formed steel members considering initial geometric imperfections

Almeida, Saulo José de Castro 05 October 2007 (has links)
The work presents a numerical analysis on cold-formed steel members compressed between pinned ends. One is about an inquiry carried through in finite elements in which it was studied the influence of initial geometric imperfections, existing in plain channels and lipped channels, under the aspects of its form, magnitude and signal. The geometric imperfection is adopted on the forms of the local, global and distortional buckling modes, observing the susceptibility to such modes for each type of section. Each imperfection is evaluated on the isolated way and after that of associated way. Referring aspects to the strategy of modeling adopted in the construction of the numerical models are presented, as well as aspects of interest with regard to the developed nonlinear analyses. For ends of attainment of the ultimate load, it is examined the possibility to use isolated buckling modes to represent the geometric imperfections, as long as the amplitude it is adjusted. The cases that had applied coupled imperfection to represent the geometric imperfection detach the paper of the signal of the imperfection of the global type with regard to its association to the imperfections of the types local and distortional for lipped channels and, to the one of the local type for plain channels.

Sobre a estabilidade de cantoneiras de aço formadas a frio submetidas à compressão / On the stability of cold-formed steel angles under compression

Maia, Wanderson Fernando 10 April 2008 (has links)
Apparently, the structural analysis of a simple angle under compression is an elementary problem, therefore, already largely known. However, cold-formed steel angles, mostly with slender legs, present two critical buckling modes: (i) global-flexural mode, in cases of high length members, (ii) and a coincident local-plate/global-torsional-flexural mode, which is critical for short length members. Although simplified design procedures exist, recommended by specifications, the consideration of the torsional-flexural mode is controversial among researchers. A few recent papers indicate that considering the torsional-flexural mode is conservative, while other papers point to the necessity of this approach. This work investigates the structural response of simple and lipped angles under concentrically and eccentrically compression, by means of tests and nonlinear finite element analysis, being evaluated the effect of initial geometric imperfections; also evaluating the results from design procedures: (i) the classic effective width method and (ii) the direct strength method (DSM), where the angles are not pre-qualified shapes. The results of the experimental and nonlinear numerical analysis with initial imperfections indicate the necessity of considering the torsional-flexural mode.
