Integrative Geophysical and Environmental Monitoring of a CO2 Sequestration and Enhanced Coalbed Methane Recovery Test in Central Appalachia

Gilliland, Ellen 02 December 2016 (has links)
A storage and enhanced coalbed methane (CO2-ECBM) test will store up to 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide in a stacked coal reservoir in southwest Virginia. The test involves two phases of CO2 injection operations. Phase I was conducted from July 2, 2015 to April 15, 2016, and injected a total of 10, 601 tons of CO2. After a reservoir soaking period of seven months, Phase II is scheduled to begin Fall 2016. The design of the monitoring program for the test considered several site-specific factors, including a unique reservoir geometry, challenging surface terrain, simultaneous CBM production activities which complicate the ability to attribute signals to sources. A multi-scale approach to the monitoring design incorporated technologies deployed over different, overlapping spatial and temporal scales selected for the monitoring program include dedicated observation wells, CO2 injection operations monitoring, reservoir pressure and temperature monitoring, gas and formation water composition from offset wells tracer studies, borehole liquid level measurement, microseismic monitoring, surface deformation measurement, and various well logs and tests. Integrated interpretations of monitoring results from Phase I of the test have characterized enhanced permeability, geomechanical variation with depth, and dynamic reservoir injectivity. Results have also led to the development of recommended injection strategy for CO2-ECBM operations. The work presented here describes the development of the monitoring program, including design considerations and rationales for selected technologies, and presents monitoring results and interpretations from Phase I of the test. / Ph. No. of bitstreams: 1 Karla Silva Santos.pdf: 2310212 bytes, checksum: 028f77dcf01b72a280d3d1ce861f0779 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-02-28 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The study of soil hydraulic conductivity assumes high importance, being a parameter that measures the easiness which the soil‟s pores transmit water, being a relevant factor for the soil-water-plant system. Associated with this, another important parameter is the physical soil resistance to root penetration, which it has been the subject of extensive study due to its negative influence on soil physical quality cultures. Knowledge of spatial variation in attributes in soil and plant can contribute with the planning and optimization in conducting experiments, as well as the commercial cropsplanning aiming to precision agriculture. In this context, this research aimed to investigate the spatial variability of chemical and physical attributes in soils of an alluvial valley in a semiarid region in Pernambuco State. Hence, tests were conducted with Guelph permeameter for evaluation of the hydraulic conductivity in saturated soil. The evaluation of soil resistance to root penetration was determined with tests on undisturbed samples in laboratory using an electronic penetrometer. The physical and chemical soil characterization was carried out by laboratory tests on deformed and undisturbed samples. Amongst the analyzed attributes, the soil saturated hydraulic conductivity showed the largest coefficient of variation, of about 261.02%. The soil resistance to root penetration values were below the limiting value for preventing the development of plants and the variability of this parameter was classified as medium, with a coefficient of variation of 51.68%. All parameters analyzed were subjected to analysis of descriptive statistics and normality. Additionally, geostatistical analysis was performed, and was constructed semivariograms for theoretical attributes. The semivariogram for the hydraulic conductivity was adjusted to an exponential model; magnesium content to the spherical model, the pH and potential acidity to an exponential one, the sand and clay percentages to a Gaussian model. The soil resistance to root penetration, porosity, density soil, organic matter, potassium, base saturation, calcium, sodium and PST showed pure nugget effect.

Estimated Extent and Fate of Chlorinated Solvent Contamination in the Soil of the Naval Air Station, Dallas, Texas

Trescott, Jill V. (Jill Virginia) 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis estimates the spatial extent of chlorinated solvent contamination of the soil at the Naval Air Station, Dallas, then estimates the fate and transport of these contaminants, over time, using the Soil Transport and Fate database and the Vadose-Zone Interactive Processes (VIP) modeling software. Geostatistical analysis identifies two areas with serious chlorinated solvent contamination. Fate and transport modeling estimates that this contamination will degrade and disperse from the soil phase to below regulatory limits within one year, although there is a risk of groundwater contamination. Contaminants are estimated to persist in the water and air phases of the soil. Further sampling is recommended to confirm the results of this study.

Caractérisation des hétérogénéités sédimentaires d’une plaine alluviale : Exemple de l’évolution de la Seine supérieure depuis le dernier maximum glaciaire / Characterization of sediment heterogeneities in an alluvial plain : The example of the upper Seine river (France) evolution since the late glacial maximum

Deleplancque, Benoit 22 November 2016 (has links)
In the scope of water resource management, the characterization of alluvial plain architecture and heterogeneity represents a challenge. This PhD work which is part of the PIREN-SEINE program focuses on largest alluvial plain of the River Seine, “La Bassée”, located upstream of Paris. This alluvial plain can be considered as a buffer layer that controls the water fluxes between the fluvial system and the regional aquifers. Determining the sedimentary heterogeneities is essential for the comprehension of fluxes, this is the aim of this work.Kilometric scale architecture of the alluvial deposits and the associated alluvial sheets chronology are established. The geometry of the sheet-bedrock contact, an incised valley, is estimated by kriging interpolation. A paleohydrological restitution is based on the paleochannels preserved at the top of the alluvial sheets. The fine scale architecture of deposits is restored from sampling data converted into petrophysics properties and ground-penetrating radar acquisitions. The alluvial plain of La Bassée corresponds to two terraces (terminal Saalian and Weichselian) in which two other terraces are staircased (Late Glacial and Holocene). The estimated sheet-bedrock contact geometry suggests the presence of a knick-point related to a regressive erosion during the Weichselian. Sedimentary facies are very similar from one alluvial sheet to another, and are dominated by high permeability deposits (sand and gravel). Low permeability facies are associated to channel plugs and mass transport deposits. The infilling model of La Bassée region obtained in this study should be compared and validated on the River Seine tributaries (Marne river, Yonne river, Oise river…) to propose a coherent model at the basin scale.

Spatio-Temporal Analyses of Cenozoic Normal Faulting, Graben Basin Sedimentation, and Volcanism around the Snake River Plain, SE Idaho and SW Montana

Davarpanah, Armita 10 May 2014 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the spatial distribution and kinematics of the Late Cenozoic Basin and Range (BR) and cross normal fault (CF) systems and their related graben basins around the Snake River Plain (SRP), and investigates the spatio-temporal patterns of lavas that were erupted by the migrating Yellowstone hotspot along the SRP, applying a diverse set of GIS-based spatial statistical techniques. The spatial distribution patterns of the normal fault systems, revealed by the Ripley's K-function, display clustered patterns that correlate with a high linear density, maximum azimuthal variation, and high box-counting fractal dimensions of the fault traces. The extension direction for normal faulting is determined along the major axis of the fractal dimension anisotropy ellipse measured by the modified Cantor dust method and the minor axis of the autocorrelation anisotropy ellipse measured by Ordinary Kriging, and across the linear directional mean (LDM) of the fault traces. Trajectories of the LDMs for the cross faults around each caldera define asymmetric sub-parabolic patterns similar to the reported parabolic distribution of the epicenters, and indicate sub-elliptical extension about each caldera that may mark the shape of hotspot’s thermal doming that formed each generation of cross faults. The decrease in the spatial density of the CFs as a function of distance from the axis of the track of the hotspot (SRP) also suggests the role of the hotspot for the formation of the cross faults. The parallelism of the trend of the exposures of the graben filling Sixmile Creek Formation with the LDM of their bounding cross faults indicates that the grabens were filled during or after the CF event. The global and local Moran’s I analyses of Neogene lava in each caldera along the SRP reveal a higher spatial autocorrelation and clustering of rhyolitic lava than the coeval basaltic lava in the same caldera. The alignment of the major axis of the standard deviational ellipses of lavas with the trend of the eastern SRP, and the successive spatial overlap of older lavas by progressively younger mafic lava, indicate the migration of the centers of eruption as the hotspot moved to the northeast.

Data were collected in native forest fragments in four areas distributed in three municipalities in the mountainous plateau of Santa Catarina: São Joaquim, Urupema and Panel. Were sampled 256 trees, which gathered up the dendrometric and morphometric variables, as well as its position in space. The morphometric analysis index indicated that the species is different degrees of competition. Covariance analysis showed no difference in the shape-size ratio in sample areas. The crown insertion height correlated positively and better fit with the overall height, and negatively correlated with the proportion of canopy. The negative correlation with pc% indicates that a higher percentage of canopy corresponding to minor hic. The relationship between the proportion of crown according to the canopy trees with length indicates that greater length cup mantle and have a higher proportion of canopy thus improved growth capacity. For the crown diameter according to the diameter at breast height it was a positive correlation, that is, with the increase in size increases with the diameter of the crown. Interdimensional relationships analyzed by covariance showed differences between growing trees in the forest and free growth. growing trees without competition have greater and greater pc% cc than trees growing in competition, as well as have higher DC than on growth in the forest. It was possible to determine the potential crown diameter, growth space, the number of trees per hectare and basal area per hectare, serving as a resource for future interventions of forest management. For the analysis of increment in diameter and the age, we used the trunk partial analysis. In São Joaquim 1 the average for the mean annual increment in diameter was 0, 45 cm.ano-1 in São Joaquim 2, was 0,69 cm.ano-1, Urupema, 0,82 cm.ano- 1 and Painel, 0,94 cm.ano-1. Covariance analysis showed no differences in the average annual increase in the study sites. The incremental adjustment in the diameter at breast height and age showed that the trees showed a gradual decrease in the increase with increase in diameter and advancing age. Pearson correlation analysis for the annual periodic increment in basal area with morphometric variables and dendrometric showed that the variables with the highest correlation were proportion of cup and diameter, with a positive correlation value of 0,40 and 0,30. The generalized linear model Gamma - identity presented the best statistical criteria in setting annual periodic increment in basal area by diameter, percentage of canopy and height. The use of cup dimensions variables can be inserted in the modeling of the annual periodic increment in basal area of Araucaria angustifolia. In geostatistical analysis initially evaluated the data from classical statistics, then proceeded to the adjustment of the semivariogram. Later, we used the ordinary kriging for the interpolation of data. The standard deviation values show that there is greater variability in the panel data. There is a positive skew for all data, making it necessary to be transformed in some cases. The exponential model demonstrated better adjustment to the areas of São Joaquin and Painel already in Urupema the best model resulted in the spherical model. With the data interpolation maps was possible to visualize the spatial distribution of mean annual increment in diameter covered the four sites, identifying the areas with the highest and lowest diameter increment. The results generated in this study can understand the structure and growth of distribution Araucaria in each study site, to facilitate the management of the landscape and the species in southern Brazil. Current legislation restricts the sustainable use of the species, its natural regeneration and the increase in the rates, so reforms are needed in the legislation to ensure the perpetuity of the type Araucaria Forest / O objetivo do presente trabalho foi utilizar a geoestatística e a dendrocronologia em conjunto com as variáveis morfométricas e dendrométricas para, com base no incremento diamétrico, avaliar o crescimento no tempo de Araucaria angustifolia no sul do Brasil, ajustar modelos de crescimento e gerar mapas da distribuição do incremento para manejo da paisagem visando intervenções sustentadas em seu ecossistema.

Variabilidade espacial e temporal de atributos agronômicos em pomar de pessegueiro / Spatial and temporal variability of agronomic attributes in peach orchard

Terra, Viviane Santos Silva 27 December 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-08-20T14:33:01Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 tese_viviane_santos_silva_terra.pdf: 3226542 bytes, checksum: 468c5162baa20a455b268e2abda6ef7e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-12-27 / The fruitculture is an important component of Brazilian agribusiness assuming prominence in the economy of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS). The municipality of Pelotas, located in the south part of RS state, is responsible for 90% of peach production having adequate conditions of climate and soil for its production. One of the main problems faced by fruit farmers is the management of the peach orchard, which has been homogeneously managed, without considering the spatial and temporal variability of soil, plant and climate attributes in the peach orchard. Therefore, some aspects deserve attention from researchers, among them we can highlight the knowledge of the physical environment in which the peach tree grows. This work had as objectives: i. to evaluate the relationship between soil hydric-physical and crop attributes through the canonical correlation analysis, ii. to determine the spatial and temporal structures of soil hydric-physical, crop and climate attributes, applying geostatistics analysis. The work was conducted in an experimental area, located in the city of Morro Redondo-RS, cultivated with 18 line peach crops, cv. Esmeralda, totaling 1,450 plants. In this area was established a experimental grid consisted of 101 experimental peach trees. At a distance of 0.50m to the right side of each crop tree, trenches were opened to collect disturbed and undisturbed soil samples to determine the following soil hydric-physical attributes, in the 0.00-0.10m and 0.10-0.20m soil layers: sand, silt and clay contents, soil bulk density, soil total porosity, soil macro- and micro-porosities, and volumetric soil water content. We also evaluated the following peach crop attributes in the years of 2010 and 2011: trunk diameter, size of the fruit/plant, total number of fruits/plant, fresh mass of fruits, fruit firmness, brix content and crop productivity. The attributes of climate air temperature and relative humidity were also evaluated in the peach orchard. All data sets were submitted to descriptive statistical analysis. The correlation between soil and crop attributes was evaluated by canonical correlation analysis. The spatial and temporal variability structures of all data sets were evaluated by geostatistics as well as the relationship between them. Results show that the canonical correlation analysis identified the highest correlation coefficients of soil micro-porosity and clay content variables and peach productivity, and that the geostatistical analysis allowed establishing homogeneous management zones of soil, crop and climate attributes as well as to infer, visually, spatial inter-relationships between variables. The association of soil, crop and climate maps indicates that future differentiated managements of agricultural practices on the peach orchard should be based on the spatial distribution of these variables aiming rational water and fertilizer applications to preserve natural resources in the agricultural farmers.
