A model for transformative learning : the promotion of successful agingShaw, Muriel Edith 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research project was to explore a model of transformative
learning for the promotion of successful aging in group counselling and psychotherapy.
This project explored how a model of life review, including guided autobiography (Birren
& Deutchman, 1991) and enactment(s) in group psychodrama (Westwood, 1997)
contributes to transformative learning (Mezirow, 1991, 1998). Successful aging
emphasizes the potential for psychological growth rather than decline across the life span.
In a field study, I used an ethnographic approach with an emphasis on reflexivity
(Atkinson & Hammersley, 1994; Fisher, 1995). For this model, seven co-researchers,
graduate students and professionals in practise, engaged in life review enactments in the
context of group psychodrama. Evidence for communicative and emancipatory action
two major domains of transformative learning (Mezirow, 1991), emerged from the data
analysis. Six major themes, including four process themes and two content themes
emerged: 1) the reflexive reconstruction of the self; 2) co-construction of the meaning of
experience; 3) moral betrayal and social injustice; 4) leadership and creating a democratic
public space; 5) action planning: individual and social action; and, 6) dreams as a
template for actions. These central themes are described. Case examples from the stories
of the co-researchers are offered as clarification. Suggestions and implications for future
research and practise are discussed. Read more

Structured reminiscence and gestalt life review : group treatment of older adults for late life adjustmentKoffman, Steven D. January 1998 (has links)
The present analogue study compared the effects of 2 theoretically divergent Life Review group psychotherapies on aspects of late life adjustment and development. Thirty-six adult non-patients, ages 65 years and older, from the Muncie - Delaware County vicinity, were randomly selected from an available subject pool of screened volunteer respondents and randomly assigned to one of three analogue treatment conditions with two groups for each treatment condition. These three treatment conditions were the structured reminiscence life review group (SRLR), the Gestalt life review group (GLR) and a Wait List control group (WLC). Demographic, mental status, and Activities of Daily Living Scale (ADL) data were obtained from initial respondents by telephone interview and followed by written completion of the Symptom Checklist (SCL 90-R). The differential effects of treatment were measured by pre and post testing on four dependent variables: (1) depression, (2) congruence, (3) helplessness, and (4) ego integrity. Results indicated that neither of the two life review group psychotherapy treatments had any statistically significant effect upon the dependent variables. In a post hoc exploratory analysis, evidence emerged which suggested that the participants in the GLR treatment condition may have shown significant improvement on several state mental health variables. The dimensions of improvement for participants in the GLR were Interpersonal Sensitivity, Hostility, Depression, and Positive Symptom report as measured by the SCL 90-R. This contrasted with those in both the SRLR or WLC condition for whom no improvement was shown. / Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services Read more

The effects of life review on well-being in the elderlyFagerstrom, Karen Michelle 01 January 2002 (has links)
It is widely believed among developmental psychologists that old age is a distinct developmental stage with unique goals, struggles and opportunities for growth. Achieving integrity involves making sense of disparate aspects of one's life and seing life as one complete whole, rather than bits and pieces of a puzzle. Integrity is achieved when each part of the puzzle is put into place, forming one complete picture.

You shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has led you (Dtn 8,2) : a practical theological study of the significance of biography work for pastoral care with persons in the post employment phase of lifeSchulz, Ursula (Theologian) 11 1900 (has links)
Old age and the process of aging is currently one of the most important fields for
future scientific study and research. Special focus is centered on the post-career
phase. A society where life is prolonged for an extra 20 to 30 years, most of which
are spent in reasonably good health, is culturally speaking a recent phenomenon for
which there are no historical models. It follows, that the current generation bears a
great responsibility in shaping and moulding this stage in their lives not only for
themselves but also for future generations.
This dissertation concentrates on the theme of aging, first from a humanistic point of
view, and secondly by focusing on biblical and theological aspects. Both of these
chapters contain fundamental and important statements regarding the subject of
aging as seen from different disciplines, and, wherever possible, with reference to
each other. They build the basis and prerequisite for the following chapter in which
the significance and possibilities as well as the limits of biography work is researched
in view of pastoral care and training for elderly people in the post employment phase
of their life.
It becomes obvious, that not only gerontological literature but also biblical texts depict
biographical work as an important prerequisite for a life experienced as being
successful, especially at drastic turning points in life. A vital part in biographical
reflection with elderly people is played by the person and professionalism of the
instructor. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Practical Theology) Read more
