Acceptance of Virtual Reality Games Among Older Adults Living in Long-Term Care Facilities: A Mixed-Methods StudyHosseini, Marjan 29 November 2023 (has links)
Background: Virtual reality (VR) offers potential for enhancing physical activity and engagement among older adults in long-term care (LTC) facilities. This addresses the need for health maintenance and independence. Yet, limited research exists on VR acceptance and its optimization for promoting physical activity. Older adults' VR gaming experiences and the social and contextual factors affecting acceptance are underexplored. This study aims to investigate these unique experiences to inform the design of inclusive VR technology in LTC, enhancing physical activity and well-being.
Objectives: My dissertation has two objectives: (1) to examine the individual and social factors that impact the acceptance of VR games among older adults in LTC facilities and (2) to explore LTC residents’ experience with VR games and the meaning they associate with their gaming experience.
Methods: To reach these objectives I conducted two studies: (1) a scoping review of 5 articles to identify evidence on older adults' acceptance of physical activity VR games in LTC facilities, describe research designs used, define key acceptance concepts, and identify knowledge gaps for future research and (2) a mixed-methods study, including a series of gaming sessions with 20 older adults residing in a healthcare center followed by a composite questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with 15 older adults and 4 staff members.
Results: The scoping review identified a knowledge gap in VR acceptance among older adults in LTC. Varying acceptance levels and inconsistent concept definitions were found, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Only one study used validated tools for assessing acceptance. The quantitative study involved VR gaming sessions with 20 participants aged 65 and older, revealing significant positive correlations between perceived ease of use and Selective Optimization with compensation (SOC) strategies. No significant relationship was found between Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Future Time Perspective (FTP). Prior gaming experience led to higher SOC and socioemotional Selectivity (SST) scores, higher game self-efficacy, and increased hedonic motivation. Age and gender had no impact. Participants viewed VR as user-friendly and useful, with positive attitudes toward aging and physically demanding activities. The qualitative revealed themes related to enjoyment, physical activity, social connection, and individual preferences. Staff perspectives addressed relevance, personalization, training, and organizational barriers. The study highlighted the potential benefits of VR gaming for LTC residents, offering insights for technology development.
Conclusion: This study offered a comprehensive understanding of VR gaming acceptance among older adults in LTC settings, highlighting the significance of individual and social factors in technology acceptance. Personalized design, support, education, trust, and safety are crucial. Integrating social theories of aging is essential to understand older adults' needs and preferences. Implications for VR design include user-centered approaches, intuitive interfaces, customization, social interaction, and safety considerations. Addressing limitations and biases in future research can promote effective use of VR as a therapeutic tool for older adults in LTC.

Percorrendo os trilhos da ferrovia rumo às associações entre longevidade humana e fatores ambientais / Traversing the raiwail route to association between human longevity and environmental factorsPatricio, Karina Pavão 26 May 2006 (has links)
Concerns with population aging, which grows fast in developing countries, associated with the intense environmental degradation, have led to delineation this research. Initially tried to discuss, and understand individual and population aging process, studying their theories: how and why we age, and reach longevity. Emphasize the factors positively associated to longevity: food restriction, genetics, and heredity, life habits, social engagement, among others. And negative conditioners, situation of exposure opposite to these, especially highlighting pollution because of the morbimortality associated with it, can shorten the life-span. Complexity of environmental problems, and necessity to break up reductionism are outstanding, moving forward in Environmental Health and its indicators. The objective of the current study aim to comprehend the possibility of associating environmental factors with an increase in human longevity, through the perspective of a group of longevity railroaders. A semi-structured questionnaire was applied to a homogeneous longevity group (30 retired ex-railroaders from Estrada de Ferro Sorocabana in Botucatu, State of São Paulo). It characterized the lives of these individuals and recovered the importance of railroad history, seeking evidences of associations among environment, health, and longevity through qualitative methodology (Grounded Theory) and quantitative one. Through Grounded Theory, three phenomena emerged, depicted from the experience of the interviewed people: ANNIHILATING LIFE, GENERATING LIFE, and LACKING SOCIAL, AND STATE CONTROL. These longevity individuals detect the current annihilation of the environment, of the railroad, and even of life itself, descending from the lack of social, and State control, allied with lack of a collective conscience, undertaken by the movement of capitalist ideology of profit at any cost. They perceive that various factors have an influence on longevity, such as living in a harmonious environment without pollution, adopting a healthful and sociable lifestyle, involving oneself in work that earns a sustainable income, becoming and staying tranquil and happy; having favorable biological and genetic factors. This research raises three premises: the complexity of factors associated to the binomial environment longevity; their interrelations; and the need to internalize environment in the health-disease-aging process. Suggest a new hypothesis of theory of longevity: Valorization of the Develop Functions (VDF). From the experience of longevity workers, emphasizing memorys role, it denotes the importance of providing the elderly population and empowering them for what they may demand from more effective governmental actions in the sense of guaranteeing a better quality of life. Also it is important to empower them for their struggle against degradation of the environment and own lives, against this culture of immediatism, and ethno devaluation, in a historic dialetic process which makes the past represent life (profits=work, golden age of the railroads) and the present signify death (losses=environmental degradation, annihilation of the railroad and railroaders, diseases).

You shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has led you (Dtn 8,2) : a practical theological study of the significance of biography work for pastoral care with persons in the post employment phase of lifeSchulz, Ursula (Theologian) 11 1900 (has links)
Old age and the process of aging is currently one of the most important fields for
future scientific study and research. Special focus is centered on the post-career
phase. A society where life is prolonged for an extra 20 to 30 years, most of which
are spent in reasonably good health, is culturally speaking a recent phenomenon for
which there are no historical models. It follows, that the current generation bears a
great responsibility in shaping and moulding this stage in their lives not only for
themselves but also for future generations.
This dissertation concentrates on the theme of aging, first from a humanistic point of
view, and secondly by focusing on biblical and theological aspects. Both of these
chapters contain fundamental and important statements regarding the subject of
aging as seen from different disciplines, and, wherever possible, with reference to
each other. They build the basis and prerequisite for the following chapter in which
the significance and possibilities as well as the limits of biography work is researched
in view of pastoral care and training for elderly people in the post employment phase
of their life.
It becomes obvious, that not only gerontological literature but also biblical texts depict
biographical work as an important prerequisite for a life experienced as being
successful, especially at drastic turning points in life. A vital part in biographical
reflection with elderly people is played by the person and professionalism of the
instructor. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Practical Theology)
