omstandighede, moeder se eie seksuele misbruik as kind asook maatskaplike
wanfunksionering. / MSW (Forensic Practice), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

The strengths of families in supporting mentally ill family members / Masego Cynthia Mokgothu.Mokgothu, Masego Cynthia, January 2012 (has links)
Since the introduction of the deinstitutionalisation policy in 1997 in South Africa, many families have agreed or have felt forced to take full responsibility of the care of their mentally ill family members. This impacted the lives of families because they were not well prepared for caring for their mentally ill family members. As a result of this, families were burdened, mentally ill family members defaulted treatment and ultimately revolving door admissions occurred. In spite of these concerns, some families do seem to cope with supporting their mentally ill family members. This makes it vital to explore and describe the strengths of families who take care of mentally ill family members in Potchefstroom, in the North West Province in order to formulate guidelines to support these families.
A qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual design was employed to understand what strengths families have to support their mentally ill family members. Purposive sampling was used to select potential participants. Unstructured individual interviews with an open-ended question were conducted with nine participants after ethical approval was granted under the RISE study (Strengthening the Resilience of Health Caregivers and Risk Groups), and the permission of the North-West Provincial Department of Health, the psychiatric hospital where the data was collected and the family members of the mentally ill family members were obtained. Data were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. A consensus meeting was held between the researcher and the co-coder after they had analysed data independently to identify themes that emerged from the data.
Twelve themes emerged from the data namely the strengths of getting the necessary treatment for the mentally ill family member, utilizing external resources, spirituality or faith, social support, supervising the mentally ill family member, finding ways to calm the mentally ill family member, explaining the importance of treatment to the mentally ill family member, finding ways to keep the mentally ill family member busy, trying to keep the mentally ill family member away from negative outside influences, trying creative ways to communicate with or understand the mentally ill family member, giving the mentally ill family member praise for doing something good or right and accepting the situation.
From the findings, it is clear that the families do have strengths to support their mentally ill family members, although they seem to rely more on external than on internal strengths. From the findings, literature and conclusions of this study, recommendations were made for nursing practice, nursing research and nursing education, including guidelines to support families in their support of a mentally ill family member. / Thesis (MCur)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

In this particular research project the narratives and experiences of parents within reconstituted families have been the subject of reflective thought, alluding to the possible influence of the classic fairy tale or fable on these experiences. Aspects which were touched on in the research included the general validity of discussions on parenting experiences in reconstituted families, while reflecting on these parents’ ability to confide and relate their experiences openly and frankly in a society where the nuclear family is often seen as the ‘ideal family’. Cognisance was taken too of the possibility that parents were reticent in voicing their experiences so as not to enforce prevalent generalisations. Furthermore, research was undertaken to examine alternative parenting narratives and methods by which these narratives could be heard so as to minimise misconceptions and labels on parenting in reconstituted families. Attention was also paid to the role that the church and fellow-believers and brethren have in aiding the often marginalised voice of non-nuclear families to be heard. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2015. / Practical Theology / Unrestricted

An information kit for families affected by child sexual abuse and reported to the East Rand Child Protection Unit / Setlaiso Caroline Poppy MalekaMaleka, Setlaiso Caroline Poppy January 2010 (has links)
Child sexual abuse is a very sensitive issue that causes trauma and damage to the
victims. This does not affect only the victims, but their families and the society at
large. It is sometimes difficult for the society to support the victims of child sexual
abuse. It then becomes a burden on the families because they lack information on
how to deal with their sexually abused children. The families do not have
knowledge of forensic social work and it becomes difficult for them to understand
the process of forensic investigation.
The information kit for families affected by child sexual abuse will empower the
families with knowledge on the process of forensic investigation. This will also help
to prepare both the children and their families for what will happen after the case has
been reported to the Child Protection Unit. They will also be able to know their
expectations when it comes to the court proceedings. An improved understanding
will help the child prepare for testifying.
Developing an information kit and reader–friendly guidelines will assist in relieving
the stress on parents and strengthen them in giving their children the necessary
support. Further research should be conducted on families’ understanding of
forensic investigation and the court proceedings involved when a child has been
sexually abused. Currently there is little data on forensic social work in South
Africa, due to the fact that forensic social work is still quite a new field in our
country.
The researcher thus identified a need for conducting a qualitative study with the
parents of sexually abused children whose cases had been reported to the Family
Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for forensic investigation at the
time of the study. The aim of this study was to develop an information kit for
families who were affected by child sexual abuse in order to give them a better
understanding of forensic investigations in such cases. An interview schedule was developed with the purpose of confirming whether the families understood what they
would be going through during the whole process.
From the research it was evident that forensic social work was something new to the
respondents as it was difficult for some of them to give detailed responses to the
questions. It became clear that the families of sexually abused children are in need
of relevant and clear information on forensic social work, the nature of forensic
investigations and associated procedures. / Thesis (M.A. (MW))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

Thesis (M.A. (Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.
