Opvoeders se ervaring van aangepaste assessering in 'n inklusiewe klaskamer

Coetzee, Sarah Johanna 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEdPsych)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Assessment in the inclusive classroom poses specific challenges to the educator. Due to the diversity of learners' needs, a need exists for adapted assessment. One standard type of assessment does not adequately satisfy the individual needs which exist due to the influence of various barriers on learners. The pursuit of human rights, democratic principles and the promotion of equality acknowledges that learners' differences need to be taken into consideration, also during the assessment process. The Education White Paper 6 for Inclusive Education (Department of Education, 2001, p.49) states that the principle of inclusion is applicable to the assessment process in: considering special circumstances, the adaptation of assessment tasks, the adaptation of the time allocated for the completion of a task, individual assessment strategies and techniques, and the provision of extended opportunities. This study therefore aimed to understand educators' experiences of adapted assessment in the inclusive classroom and to gain insight into the challenges encountered and the support needed. The researcher worked from an interpretive paradigm. An action research design was used, as action research attempts to actively involve participants in the research process. A qualitative research methodology was followed and included the following: purposive sample selection to identify research participants, open questionnaires, individual and focus group interviews and field notes to generate data, and content analysis to analyze data. Research findings indicate that educators experience the use of adapted assessment positively, because of the space it provides to meet individual needs and address barriers to learning in the inclusive classroom. Furthermore, it became evident that educators need support and guidance to adapt assessment to the individual needs of learners appropriately.

The lived experiences of adolescents with barriers to learning who participate in an alternative assessment programme / Karin Adriana Bursey

Bursey, Karin Adriana January 2015 (has links)
South Africa has adopted the international trend towards inclusive education. The result is an increasing number of learners with barriers to learning accommodated in mainstream schools. Alternative assessment programmes make provision to address the barriers to learning of these learners during formal assessments. Alternative assessment programmes are a good start to afford learners with barriers to learning a fair chance to impart their knowledge. However, the programmes are adult driven and, as the users of these programmes, we need to consider the learners’ views also. Knowledge of their experience will increase understanding of their needs, which in turn will help to refine the programmes and adjust the programmes to these needs. General aim of the study: to explore the lived experience of learners with barriers to learning, who participated in an alternative assessment programme in a mainstream high school in the Western Cape, in a qualitative way, through a phenomenological design. The phenomenological design provided a deeper understanding of the learners’ experience of the alternative assessment programme from the learners’ viewpoint. We held unstructured, individual interviews with the eight participants who consented to participate in the study. As requested, the participants made collages of their experiences of the alternative assessment programme in a group setting, prior to the interviews. Section B presents the findings of this qualitative study and relates the learners’ experience of the alternative assessment programme during test- and formal examination series. The findings highlight the importance of considering the opinions of learners with barriers, participating in an alternative assessment programme. / MSc (Master of Social Work), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Leemtes in die assessering van die seksueel misbruikte kind deur die forensiese maatskaplike werker / Charmaine Elmien Meüter

Meüter, Charmaine Elmien January 2011 (has links)
The demand for forensic social work as a specialist field is increasing rapidly, due to the increasing moral decline of the community and consequent higher demands set to generic social workers. Amendments to existing acts as well as the development of new legislation, lead to more opportunity for the prosecution of the perpetrator, and therefore a higher utilization of the forensic social worker. A need was experienced to do research regarding the gaps experienced by social workers or any other workers who are currently executing forensic assessments with the sexually traumatised child. The aim of the investigation was to determine which gaps social workers experience in the field when assessing a child forensically. A recording procedure was used to obtain qualitative as well as quantitative data. A purposive sampling was used were interviews were held with five participants to obtain the data. A selfdeveloped questionnaire was used as measuring instrument. It is clear from the findings that there are definite gaps within the field of forensic social work and the need of further research within the field of forensic social work in South Africa is highlighted. / Thesis (MA (SW (Forensic))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Die assessering van die probleme wat onderwysers binne klasverband ervaar en hul behoefe aan die benutting van 'n spelterapeut (Afrikaans)

Jordaan, Yolandi Maria 25 October 2004 (has links)
This research is aimed at the nature of problems that teachers experience in class and their need for the utilisation of a play therapist. A lack of sufficient guidelines for this field has been identified in the relevant literature. This shortage has been confirmed by grade one to four teachers. To reach the required goal a number of objectives were set. This included setting up a knowledge framework by way of a literature study as well as consultation with experts in the field; studying the role of the teacher in respect of the child in the middle childhood phase, problems that teachers experience in class and the middle childhood as a life phase. An empirical study was undertaken during which focus group interviews were held with grade one to four teachers. Thirty-two participants took part in the focus groups. Applied research was undertaken as the researcher aimed at establishing the true needs of teachers of children in the middle childhood phase. The empirical data showed the following: · Teachers are of the opinion that children manifest a wide variety of problem behaviours in class and that they do not possess the necessary knowledge and skills to address these problems effectively. · Teachers are of the opinion that they possess limited coping strategies in which to address the problem behaviours that children manifest in class effectively. · Teachers have definite views on the problem behaviours that occur in class with which they experience difficulty handling effectively. · Teachers have listed definite needs and perceptions regarding the utilisation of a play therapist. The basic need for the establishing of a training program for teachers during which they will receive training regarding the handling of certain problem behaviours that children disclose in class, was one of the key findings of the study. / Dissertation (MSD (Play Therapy))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Social Work / unrestricted

The influence of the learner profile on recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment

Snyman, Maria 06 1900 (has links)
The recognition of prior learning (RPL) is an assessment process through which experience gained outside academic contexts is recognised. The purpose of the research was to determine the influence the learner profile has on RPL assessment. To realise the purpose, the learner profile was described and consequently learning outcomes formulated for a portfolio workshop. The method which the study followed was a qualitative interpretative approach. The research comprised a literature study about adult learning theories that served as a theoretical framework for the study, as well as an overview of RPL assessment, followed by an empirical study. The empirical research component followed a multiple data collection method. The personal life stories of the research participants were analysed in order to compile a learner profile. The role the workshop played was determined from a learner perspective by means of an open questionnaire for participants. It included a collection of workshop photographs. Finally, the reflection of a group of RPL learners about their personal learning experiences was analysed. The research found that the learner profile included distinctive personal traits, such as motivation, task orientation, a sense of responsibility and an orientation towards the future. The nature of the learner profile as well as of informal learning gained within diverse learning contexts require directed preparation for assessment. The learners regarded the portfolio workshop as a sustainable learning process and as a transformational learning experience. The role the workshop played was multidimensional, as it served as preparation for compiling the portfolio. It also empowered and prepared the learner on a personal level for the context of tertiary education. Based on the research findings, the recommendations for an RPL approach should include the following: Firstly, the learner‟s voice should be afforded recognition. Secondly, preparation for assessment is essential. Thirdly, the preparation should follow an approach of assessment as a sustainable learning process. Finally, the learning outcomes for the portfolio workshop make a contribution to support the learners in bridging the learning contexts of informal learning and academic learning. The research makes a valuable contribution, as the empirical research shows that the holistic learner profile guides the approach to assessment. The mission of RPL to bring about transformation will only become a reality if a learner-centred approach recognises and empowers the learner on a personal and academic level. Namibian teachers' and learners' attitudes towards the new mathematics promotion requirements for grade 5-9: a qualitative case study / Ainna Kapango Moses.

Moses, Ainna Kapango January 2012 (has links)
Mathematics achievement has received much attention in recent years and results have been presented after examining results from different counties. This contribution deals with the implementation of new Mathematic promotion requirements in Namibia. The research was conducted in Shambyu circuit, Kavango region, within a selected combined public school situated fifteen kilometres from Rundu in the North-Eastern part of Kavango. Teachers and learners in Namibia have not performed well in the Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality (SACMEQ) projects, especially in Mathematics. The implementation of new promotion requirements was inevitable for improving achievement levels. The main aim of this study is to document the attitudes of teachers and learners towards the introduction of the new 2010 Mathematics promotion requirements. The complexity and the nature of attitudes are illustrated and some of the characteristics related to teaching and learning of Mathematics in the academic reform are presented. The researcher developed a conceptual framework to compare and contrast the theoretical positions on the topic. Attitude is defined from diverse perspectives, and relationships of attitudes pertaining to achievement to perform in Mathematics are argued. A qualitative case study was the preferred method of choice. The participants were sampled according to a non-probability purposive sampling strategy. Five teachers, six grade 7 and six grade 9 learners participated in the study. The participants were interviewed to gain insight into how they formulated their attitudes towards the implementation of the academic reform. Focus group interviews were captured though audio recordings. Patterns, themes and categories emerged from the data analysis, suggesting that teachers and learners demonstrate positive and negative attitudes which affect their stance towards the new promotion requirements. Research findings were compared with the relevant literature to identify strengths and weaknesses as extracted from the attitudes of the participating teachers and learners which confirm that attitudes of teachers and learners interrelate and affect teaching and learning of Mathematics. Strengths and weaknesses extracted from the attitudes of the teachers relate to teaching strategies, pedagogical content knowledge and practical application of the subject. A weakness of the policy change is that the Ministry of Education does not sustain involvement. Teachers need support through workshops to increase their pedagogical content knowledge and gain more information about the implementation of the new policy. Furthermore teachers expect educational support from the Ministry of Education through the provision of textbooks and teaching aids. Collaboration between teachers is crucial, as is the significance thereof for developing pedagogical content knowledge for the implementation of the new Mathematical policy. Strengths and weaknesses extracted from attitudes as viewed by learners in grade 9 are more related to their opinions about the teachers, their motivation and academic achievements. Learners’ natural Mathematics skills should be developed to instill feelings of accomplishment. Grade 9 learners experience fear and insecurity in Mathematics because learners experience teachers as too strict, owing to the absence of pedagogical content knowledge. The grade 9 learners distinguish the importance of ICT use in Mathematics as part of a process to prepare them towards greater goals and practical application as a strength. Both advantages and disadvantages of beliefs regarding Mathematics amongst the teachers and the learners guide grade 7 learner towards achievement. Further expectations drive the grade 7 learners towards achievement in order to increase career opportunities and level of schooling. In conclusion the in-depth qualitative exploration is summarized in order to investigate the phenomenon of attitudes towards Mathematics and academic reform. / Thesis (MEd (Mathematics Education))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.
