De l'individu à la collectivité : Traumatisme et santé mentale chez Gisèle Pineau

Ce projet analyse la présence du traumatisme ainsi que de la santé mentale dans la literature francophone. Visant à explorer ces rapports, ce projet de recherche se base sur la question du rôle du traumatisme ainsi que de la santé mentale dans Chair piment (2002) et Folie, aller simple. Journée ordinaire d’une infirmière (2010) de Gisèle Pineau, par rapport à l’individu et par rapport à la collectivité. Pour commencer, ce projet de recherche introduit les définitions des termes « traumatisme » et « santé mentale, » pour cimenter les recherches dans un discours spécifique. Ensuite, il explore la façon dont ces deux définitions s’appliquent aux textes du corpus. Après, à partir de la pensée de Julia Kristeva sur la dépression et l’abjection, il se concentre sur l’individu et son rapport à ces éléments. Mais du point de vue collectif, le travail se concentre sur les éléments historiques et sociaux qui peuvent être des facteurs déterminants de la « maladie mentale ». Pour cela, le travail s’inspire de Judith Butler, surtout dans ce qu’elle appelle les « grievable lives », pour montrer que certains traumatismes collectifs peuvent avoir un impact durable sur les individus sans que cela puisse paraître comme tel. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Com isso, pretende-se compreender o projeto literário da autora sob a luz da proposta de repensar as representações do ser antilhano no mundo, considerando que a literatura é não só o locus de construção do imaginário e lugar de crítica, mas também um espaço onde se abrem e se vislumbram novos debates concernentes à construção identitária. A análise do corpus literário foi articulada à busca e à afirmação de identidade, em face do processo assimilatório vivenciado pelos antilhanos, e à violência histórica do processo colonizador, que impôs uma série de valores os quais se manifestam na sociedade antilhana. Para tanto, elaboramos a aproximação crítica entre as duas obras de Gisèle Pineau e o pensamento de Édouard Glissant, focando em três pontos desenvolvidos por ele, a saber: a mentalidade de assistidos que se refere à dependência em vários aspectos do antilhano em relação à França; o delírio verbal coutumier que se manifesta em sociedades que vivenciaram o processo histórico da colonização e que evidencia o desequilíbrio não só do individuo, bem como o da coletividade no qual esse indivíduo está inserido e, por último, a história (não-história, recusa da história e apropriação da história), que prefigura uma busca de si e da busca da memória coletiva. Trata-se, pois, de compreender os mecanismos de alienação do antilhano e as suas estratégias de conservação no dia a dia da existência. / Cette recherche analyse deux oeuvres de l’écrivain franco-antillaise Gisèle Pineau (L’espérance-macadam et L’exil selon Julia), les plaçant dans le contexte plus large de la nouvelle littérature antillaise que même «[...] affirmant leurs liens culturels, en particulier avec les traditions littéraires occidentales et la culture populaire africaine [...] proclame son individualité» (LUDWIG, 1994, p. 15). Avec cela, nous avons l'intention de comprendre le projet littéraire de l'auteur à la lumière de la proposition de repenser les représentations de l’être antillais dans le monde, considérant que la littérature n'est pas seulement le lieu de la construction de l'imaginaire et de la critique, mais aussi un espace où on peut ouvrir et envisager de nouveaux débats concernant la construction de l'identité. L'analyse du corpus littéraire a été articulée à la recherche et à l'affirmation de l'identité, en face du processus d'assimilation vécue par les Antillais, et la violence historique du processus de colonisation, qui a imposé une série de valeurs lesquelles se manifestent dans la société antillaise. Par conséquent, nous avons développé une approche critique entre les deux oeuvres de Gisèle Pineau et la pensée d'Édouard Glissant, en se concentrant sur trois points qu'il a développé, à savoir: la mentalité d’assistés qui fait référence à la dépendance sur divers aspects de l'Antillais par rapport à la France; le délire verbal coutumier manifesté dans les sociétés qui ont connu le processus historique de la colonisation et le déséquilibre qui reflète non seulement l'individu, ainsi que la communauté dans laquelle cette personne appartient et, enfin, l'histoire (non-histoire, le déni de l'histoire et l'appropriation de l'histoire), qui préfigure une quête de soi-même et la poursuite de la mémoire collective. Il s'agit, par conséquent, de comprendre les mécanismes d'aliénation des Antillais et leurs stratégies de conservation au jour le jour de l'existence.

Reading across the Archipelago : anglophone and francophone Caribbean perspectives on place and ontology by Jamaica Kincaid and Gisèle Pineau

This interdisciplinary study traces the relationship between place and ontology in anglophone and francophone Caribbean contexts, respectively, in selected fictional texts by contemporary Afro-Caribbean women writers Jamaica Kincaid and Gisèle Pineau. In particular, the thesis considers the ways in which notions of place are complicated by the fact that these authors are doubly diasporic. Kincaid and Pineau are of the African diaspora, and they are also migrant writers who travel back and forth between the Caribbean neocolonies and the neoimperia (the United States for Kincaid and France for Pineau). The Antiguan-born Kincaid relocated to the United States as an adolescent and continues to reside there today – despite not having renounced her Antiguan citizenship. Pineau was born and raised in Paris by Guadeloupean parents, who later transplanted the family to their Caribbean homeland when Pineau was an adolescent. After moving between the Caribbean and Paris throughout the ensuing decades, Guadeloupe is now her primary place of residence. Kincaid and Pineau, who are of the same generation and from neighbouring Caribbean islands, share fascinating points of intersection and divergence with regard to their treatment of place and ontology in their oeuvres. This project draws upon a number of theoretical paradigms and examines them in conjunction with Kincaid and Pineau’s fiction in order to discern whether or not these models are apposite to their work. Some examples are: decolonisation/decolonial, postcolonial, womanist and feminist, gender, critical race, psychoanalysis, trauma, ecocritical, spatial, semiotic, ethnographic, Marxian and post-Marxist, poststructuralist, deconstructionist, postmodernist, aesthetic and anti-aesthetic, and photographic theories. The thesis opens with an introductory chapter that locates my research within larger, ongoing discussions of place and ontology in the field of postcolonial studies. It also explains the methodological approaches of the project, in addition to brief descriptions of subsequent chapters. The first chapter of the investigative body of the thesis outlines the decolonising theoretical axiomatics which underpin Kincaid and Pineau’s fictional writings. Next I provide a chapter each on key works by Kincaid and Pineau in order to establish their individual thematic and formal concerns before turning, in the ensuing chapters, to connective readings of their texts within certain contextual frameworks. I also examine Kincaid and Pineau’s imbricated treatment of connecting themes that appear to ricochet throughout their corpora of writings. This linkage between landscape and ontology is fundamental to understanding migration experience in that multiple landscapes and cultures become rooted in individual and collective identities as complex biographic phenomena. Kincaid and Pineau address this relationship between the environment and (auto)fiction as a way of investigating the constitutive relations between place, body, and ontology.
