Initial Ablation of the Laurentide Ice Sheet Based on Gulf of Mexico Sediments

The objective of this project is to reconstruct a picture of initial Laurentide Ice Sheet retreat at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) using geochemical proxies in Gulf of Mexico sediments, and place the reconstruction into global perspective. The project asks two questions. (1) Can a time frame be established for initial retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet? (2) If so, how does the timing compare to that of other large ice sheets and mountain glaciers in both hemispheres? Sediment core MD02-2550 from the anoxic Orca Basin offers excellent preservation and a high sediment accumulation rate. Twelve accelerator mass spectrometry 14C dates provide very good age control from 18.36 - 23.88 ka, the transitional period from glacial to deglacial conditions. Paired Mg/Ca and d18O from the planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber (pink variety) were combined with a matching record from the upper half of the same core from a previous study (Williams et al., 2010), expanding the record to 10.73 - 23.86 ka. Sea surface temperature (SST) derived from Mg/Ca exhibits a mean value of 23.0 ± 0.8°C through the LGM (18.4-23.9 ka), ~3.9°C below the modern summer mean. At 18.4 ka, mean values drop in an anomalous cold snap, exhibiting a mean of 21.7°C that lasted until 17.8 ka. At 17.8 ka, SST begins a recovery warming toward present day conditions. This warming occurs markedly early relative to the onset of the Bølling-Allerød warm period, known best from Greenland ice core records. The d18O of seawater exhibits no sustained shift toward more depleted values that would be consistent with a single major surge of initial meltwater. Instead, d18Osw appears to have been over 1.5 per mil below the modern mean throughout the LGM, persisting through the early deglacial period, and not shifting toward more positive values until well into the Younger Dryas. The corresponding salinity estimates were likewise ~2 psu lower than modern surface waters. Several negative excursions (~1 per mil) during the LGM and deglaciation coincide with millennial-scale retreats of individual lobes along the southern margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. These retreats and re-advances have previously been suggested to mirror small short-term excursions in Greenland ice core d18O, that reflects air temperature changes. The consistently depleted d18Osw-ivc values and corresponding salinity estimates through the LGM require a mechanism to create a steady-state lower salinity environment in the northern Gulf of Mexico during the LGM, which would persist as SST changed.

Late Glacial and Early Holocene Geoarchaeology and Terrestrial Paleoecology in the Lowlands of the Middle Tanana Valley, Subarctic Alaska

This dissertation project focuses on three study areas in the middle Tanana Valley (mTV) to provide records of local terrestrial ecological contexts and environmental changes in lowland settings that dated to the Late Glacial and early Holocene (16,000 to 6,000 cal. years ago) in interior Alaska and Eastern Beringia. The archaeological record of the mTV provides a rich history of hunter-gatherer land use dating over 14,000 years old. This project is part of two larger projects focused on prehistoric human ecology and foraging behavior in Eastern Beringia: the Quartz Lake-Shaw Creek Flats Multidisciplinary and Upward Sun River Site Projects. The study areas are spread out across a 4,000 km2 area in the mTV and contain the presence of archaeological sites that have records of well-developed stratification of sediments and soils and preserved macrofossils. Two of the study areas are dune fields: the Little Delta Dunes (including the Upward Sun River Site) and Rosa-Keystone Dunes Fields; the third area is Quartz Lake, one of the largest lakes within the region. As a whole they provide important information to understand the evolution of regional landscapes, paleoecological systems, and paleoenvironmental conditions dating back to 25,000 years ago, over 10,000 years prior to the currently accepted earliest human occupation of the region. Late Glacial and early Holocene landscapes of the mTV were ones of moderate stability and landscape disturbance with high rates of loess and aeolian sand deposition, and the presence of early-to-middle successional vegetation communities (herbs and forbs, shrubs, and deciduous trees) that fostered the presence of diverse mammalian faunal communities that no longer coexist in the region. As the middle Holocene approached, landscapes became increasingly stable with the expansion of the boreal forest and aeolian deposition drastically decreased throughout the mTV. The disturbances that fostered the highly productive early-to-middle successional vegetative communities in the Late Glacial and early Holocene became progressively partitioned in the middle Holocene and primarily relegated to active floodplains. These local ecological contexts can be used to assess changes in Late Glacial and Holocene faunal diversity and in human ecology and foraging behavior in interior Alaska and Eastern Beringia.

Factors Controlling Variability in the Oxidative Capacity of the Troposphere on Interannual to Interglacial Time Scales

This thesis explores the natural forces controlling variability of the tropospheric oxidants on interannual to glacial-interglacial time scales. The oxidants (primarily OH and ozone) determine the lifetime of many trace gases of human interest, including air pollutants and long-lived greenhouse gases such as methane. The oxidants respond to meteorological conditions, precursor emissions (natural and anthropogenic), and surface and overhead stratospheric boundary conditions, all of which have changed since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; ~21ka). This dissertation first examines in mechanistic detail the effect of variability in the lightning source of nitrogen oxides \((NO_x)\) precursors on interannual variability (IAV) of the oxidants in the recent past. An optimized technique is presented to constrain the lightning \(NO_x\) source in the GEOS-Chem global chemical transport model (CTM) to time-varying satellite data from the Lightning Imaging Sensor. This constraint improves the ability of the CTM to reproduce observed IAV in 9-year (1998-2006) hindcasts of tropical ozone and OH. IAV in ozone and OH is more sensitive to lightning than to biomass burning, despite greater IAV in \(NO_x\) from the latter source. The sensitivity of OH to lightning reflects positive chemical feedbacks on ozone production, \(HO_x\) recycling, and loss frequencies. This dissertation next introduces an offline-coupled climate-biosphere-chemistry framework for determining oxidant levels at and since the LGM. Detailed simulations of tropospheric composition are performed by GEOS-Chem driven by meteorological fields from the GISS ModelE general circulation model, land cover from the BIOME4-TG global terrestrial equilibrium vegetation model, and fire emissions from the LMfire model. Time slice simulations are presented for the present day, preindustrial, and two different possible representations of the LGM climate. Sensitivity of the results to uncertainty in lightning and biomass burning emissions is tested. Though well-buffered, all simulations find net reduced oxidative capacities relative to the present day. The most important parameters for controlling tropospheric oxidants over glacial-interglacial periods are changes in overhead ozone, tropospheric \(H_2O\), and lightning. On Sea Level - Ice Sheet Interactions

This thesis focuses on the physics of static sea-level changes following variations in the distribution of grounded ice and the influence of these changes on the stability and dynamics of marine ice sheets. Gravitational, deformational and rotational effects associated with changes in grounded ice mass lead to markedly non-uniform spatial patterns of sea-level change. I outline a revised theory for computing post-glacial sea-level predictions and discuss the dominant physical effects that contribute to the patterns of sea-level change associated with surface loading on different timescales. I show, in particular, that a large sea-level fall (rise) occurs in the vicinity of a retreating (advancing) ice sheet on both short and long timescales. I also present an application of the sea-level theory in which I predict the sea-level changes associated with a new model of North American ice sheet evolution and consider the implications of the results for efforts to establish the sources of Meltwater Pulse 1A. These results demonstrate that viscous deformational effects can influence the amplitude of sea-level changes observed at far-field sea-level sites, even when the time window being considered is relatively short (≤ 500 years). / Earth and Planetary Sciences

Disturbed State Concept Based Constitutive Modeling for Reliability Analysis of Lead Free Solders in Electronic Packaging and for Prediction of Glacial Motion.

The disturbed state concept (DSC) based constitutive model is the focus of this research. It is applied for characterizing two problems; thermomechanical reliability analysis of electronic packages, and prediction of glacial motion. A new procedure for construction of static yield surface for materials is proposed. Further, a modified DSC model to include effect of rate of loading on material behavior is proposed.The DSC is applied to characterize the behavior of Sn-3.9Ag-0.6Cu (SAC) lead free solder alloy used in electronic packages. Proposed procedure of construction of static curve and rate dependent DSC model is applied for prediction of creep and rate dependent behavior of the SAC alloy. Laboratory test data is adopted from the literature and material parameters are determined. The DSC model is validated using the derived material parameters. A finite element analysis of the BGA 225 package is performed under cyclic thermomechanical loading. Analysis results are compared with available test data. A failure criterion for prediction of number of cycles to failure for BGA 225 is then derived.The second application of DSC discussed in this work is prediction of glacial motion. Mechanical behavior of glacial till and its contribution to overall ice movement is characterized using DSC. Two regionally significant tills are chosen and samples are collected from field. A series of laboratory tests are conducted on samples. Tests results are used for model calibration and validation. A numerical simulation of an idealized ice - till system under gravity loading is performed. Two such analyses are performed with DSC and Mohr Coulomb models and the results are compared.The DSC predicts failure when a significant portion of the material reaches a critical disturbance whereas the Mohr Coulomb model predicts failure based on peak stress. DSC predicts a gradual progression to failure whereas the Mohr Coulomb model predicts early catastrophic failure. According to DSC, the material undergoes considerable plastic strains before it reaches failure whereas the Mohr Coulomb predicts failure at very low elastic strains. In general the DSC is considered to provide a more realistic and general constitutive model for glacial tills.

The importance of Labrador-Ungava as one of the main gathering grounds and centres of dispersal of the Laurentide ice sheet, and as the location of the final disappearance of the ice was recognized as early as 1896 with the publication of the reports of the government geologist, A.P. Low. Despite this knowledge the peninsula has received very little attention until recently, due undoubtedly to its inaccessibility, and to the practical difficulties of field research in the subarctic environment. Until about 1945 the studies of glacial geomorphology that had been completed ( with the exception of the early work of Low) were almost entirely confined to the coastal regions, in particular to the Atlantic coast of Labrador. The most significant scientific contribution was that of Tanner, who visited the coast of Labrador in 1937 and 1939. The investigations of Tanner and his colleagues, and Tanner (1944) synthesis of the reports of earlier geologists were published in a summary of the glaciations of the entire peninsula, which remains the standard regional reference to this day. Inevitably, with the meagre, and o:tten not entirely accurate information of the interior parts of Labrador Ungava there is a marked contrast in the degree to which detailed evidence is available to the glacial geomorphologist, attempting to decipher the details of glaciation over the whole peninsula.

Organic Matter Biomarker Fingerprinting of Glacial Deposits

The goal of this thesis was to test the applicability of biomarker analyses to better understand the glacial stratigraphic record of the Hudson Bay Lowlands and Oak Ridges Moraine. A biomarker analysis conducted on three geologic deposits from the Hudson Bay Lowlands showed that they can be differentiated based on organic matter (OM) inputs and stage of diagenesis, relating to paleoclimate and depositional environments. In the second study, a biomarker analysis was applied to samples from ten deposits in the Oak Ridges Moraine. These deposits were differentiated based on OM inputs relating to paleovegetation. Additionally, reincorporation and post-deposition alteration led to sample heterogeneity confirming the current understanding of glacial depositional processes and environments. This thesis shows that biomarker analyses can effectively differentiate and contextualize geologic deposits based on OM inputs and stage of diagenesis. This in turn will provide a more robust understanding of the stratigraphic record.
