An investigation of the hypocholesterolemic and antioxidative effects of whey protein isolates in the Golden Syrian hamster /Nicodemo, Antonio January 2004 (has links)
Whey protein isolates (WPI) have been indicated to have potent cholesterol lowering and antioxidative properties. Such effects, however, are not consistently observed, which could be the result of major differences in the processing, isolation and composition of WPI. Moreover, the mechanisms of action or the bioactive component(s) in WPI are poorly understood although the relatively high cysteine content in WPI has been suggested to play an important role. Although high dietary cysteine has been shown to lower plasma homocysteine concentrations, the impact of WPI in this regard has not been investigated. The overall objective of this thesis was to examine the antioxidative and plasma cholesterol and homocysteine lowering properties of two WPI that were produced via different industrial processing and isolation techniques with the milk protein, casein, used as the control protein. We also examined for the mechanism(s) of action of WPI in terms of possible antioxidative, and plasma cholesterol and homocysteine lowering effects. In this regard, the intake of bovine serum albumin (BSA), a major cysteine-rich whey protein was also studied since this protein has been implicated as a key bioactive component for the antioxidant effects of WPI. Four studies were performed. The first involved the characterization of a variety of commercially prepared WPI by high performance capillary electrophoresis for identification of two WPI products that showed major differences in protein composition for subsequent feeding trials. Most of the WPI had similar characteristic electrophoretic profiles, however, significant differences in protein and macronutrient (Ca, Mg, P) composition were noted in two commercial WPI that were chosen as the test proteins in subsequent feeding trials. In the first two feeding studies, hamsters were fed different commercial WPI or milk protein (BSA or casein) containing diets that were either matched or unmatched in terms of macro

STAGING THESEUS: THE MYTHOLOGICAL IMAGE OF THE PRINCE IN THE COMEDIA OF THE SPANISH GOLDEN AGEJordan, Whitaker R 01 January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation uses the seventeenth-century Spanish plays which employ an array of mythological stories of Theseus to analyze the Early Modern ideology of the Prince. The consideration of the different rulers in these plays highlights different aspects of these sovereigns such as their honor, prudence, valor, and self-control. Many of these princes fall well short of the ideal explained in the comedia and in the writings of the arbitristas. By employing the hylomorphic theory in which everything can exist in either its matter or its form, it is shown that in order to have the form of a prince, rulers must act in certain ways to reach that ideal or perfect state. Many princes in the plays, however, at least at certain times, only have the matter of a prince and fall short of the form. By drawing from mythological theories which describe the need for a mediation or an alleviation of an irresolvable contradiction within a society, it is shown that despite the imperfections of the flawed princes that are put on stage, these plays still defend and glorify the monarchical system in which they were created as well as the specific imperfect princes.
The six plays examined here in which Theseus is a primary protagonist are El laberinto de Creta, Las mujeres sin hombres, and El vellocino de oro by Lope de Vega; Los tres mayores prodigios by Calderón de la Barca; El labyrinto de Creta by Juan Bautista Diamante; and Amor es más laberinto by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and Juan de Guevara. These plays span a large portion of the seventeenth century and although the authors wrote some of them for the corrales, they created others to be performed before the court.

COMPARATIVE ECOLOGY OF THE GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER AND BLUE-WINGED WARBLER ON RECLAIMED MINES IN SOUTHEASTERN KENTUCKYPatton, Laura L. 01 January 2007 (has links)
The golden-winged warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera) inhabits lower elevations on reclaimed surface mines in Kentucky, an indication of recent range expansion in this imperiled species. In 2004 and 2005, I compared breeding habitat between the golden-winged warbler and blue-winged warbler (V. pinus) in eastern Kentucky at landscape, territory, and nest site scales. Distance to forest edge averaged 38 m for the golden-winged warbler and 33 m for the blue-winged warbler. Maximum territory size averaged 1.5 ha for the golden-winged warbler and 2.1 ha for the blue-winged warbler. The golden-winged warbler occurred at higher elevations (up to 912 m) than the blue-winged warbler (up to 693 m). Golden-winged warblers occurred on flatter slopes when coexisting with bluewinged warblers. A higher percentage of grass cover occurred in golden-winged warbler territories where blue-winged warblers were absent compared to territories of either species where the two coexisted. Golden-winged warblers coexisting with blue-winged warblers were more often found in shrub cover than when they established territories in absence of blue-winged warblers. Management for the golden-winged warbler should focus on enhancement of transition zones between forest edges and open grasslands, especially at higher elevations.

Evolutionary ecology of multiple ornaments in the golden whistlervan Dongen, Wouter Frederik Dirk Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
The function of multiple display signals in golden whistlers (Pachycephala pectoralis) was investigated over three field seasons (2001/02 – 2003/04) at Toolangi State Forest (Victoria, Australia). Male golden whistlers are highly ornamented and possess several elaborate plumage displays, including a yellow breast and a conspicuous white throat patch. In addition, they are highly vociferous and possess large song repertoires. (For complete abstract open document)

Organizational learning in a food industry value chainDunne, Anthony John January 2006 (has links)
[Abstract]: This dissertation documents and evaluates the transformational change process undertaken by a major Australian food manufacturer, Golden Circle Limited. The study focuses on evaluating what impact the change process had on the organization’s capacity to learn and its ability to apply such learning to improve its competitive performance. The primary data used in this evaluation were generated by three sets of semi-structured interviews conducted with respondents drawn from different levels of management within Golden Circle and its key value chain partners over a two year period. From January 2004 to December 2005, the company reported a cost reduction of 21% within the Supply Chain and Operations Area, which had been the focus of the transformational change process. This improvement in performance was based on three success factors: the presence of an effective change champion, the formation of cross-functional project teams that were empowered, responsible and accountable, and the presence of a structured process designed to develop a culture of continuous improvement. Improved relationships with the organization’s supply chain partners directly contributed to the improved operational performance through higher quality inputs, better operational alignment and reduced inventory holdings. The study identified that there were three key factors that were essential for the development of an organizational climate that nurtured learning: leadership that was inclusive, supportive and proactive; a culture of individual responsibility and team accountability; and an organizational structure that promoted open communication and collaboration. Further, this study identified four factors that enabled new knowledge to be applied: the presence of a shared vision, adequate resources (both financial and personnel), a willingness to participate, and the capabilities to participate.A significant component of this research was the construction, testing and refinement of a model of organizational learning in the context of a value chain that would be of value to future research and managerial practice in the area of organizational adaptation.
