Tailored: Living through Wearable Design

Chenault, Lindsay Vaughn 21 April 2008 (has links)
Tailored is a graphic design experiment which explores clothing as communication. It tells the story of my life through my body and the “designed” skirts I wear. Clothing is a visual representation of who we are and what we do. Through Tailored I am pushing the boundaries of how people read what I wear. I have designed and made skirts that explicitly define (through words, fabric and image) the six main compartments of my life. This paper records and explores the visual experiences I create for those around me and myself. Tailored is a personal investigation of how clothing speaks about me through personally designed garments.

Creative Design of Lepelletier Automatic Transmission for Automobile

Pang, Ye-Jun 17 August 2011 (has links)
An epicyclic-type automatic transmission is a device which is connected from the engine to the driven wheels. A Lepelletier automatic transmission consists of a two-DOF epicyclic gear mechanism and a fundamental geared entity, which can provide more speed ratios. For the development of automatic transmission with eight or more speed ratios, an efficient design methodology is urgently needed and still not available. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to develop a systematic method for the design of Lepelletier automatic transmission. First, the features and requirements of the Lepelletier automatic transmissions are investigated and the corresponding design requirements are induced. Next, the theory of the analysis of speed ratios for Lepelletier automatic transmission is derived based on the concept of lever analogy. Then, the design theory of Lepelletier automatic transmission is developed based on the analysis theory. Finally, the complete atlas of six-speed and eight-speed Lepelletier automatic transmissions can be systematically synthesized from the data of three given speed ratios. In this article, the innovative and patentable six-speed and eight-speed Lepelletier automatic transmissions with the simplest structure have been. This proposed design method can also be applied to the development and design of ten-speed Lepelletier automatic transmissions.

Innovation, Imitation, Legitimacy and Deviance in the Design of Graphical Trademarks in the United States, 1884-2003

Bowie, James I. January 2005 (has links)
Graphical trademarks, or logos, represent important aspects of organizational identity and have become ubiquitous in society. Although the conventional wisdom of practitioners in design and business dictates that trademarks should be unique and distinctive, anecdotal evidence suggests that many trademarks appear to be similar to one another. This dissertation attempts to understand patterns of similarity and difference in graphical trademark design through the lens of neoinstitutional theory in sociology. Using data on trademarks from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the designs of the over 750,000 graphical trademarks filed in the United States between 1884 and 2003 are analyzed in terms of their content, design complexity, and degree of design realism or abstraction. A series of hypotheses regarding trademark design dynamics is tested. Evidence is found suggesting that, rather than providing distinctiveness, trademarks serve to provide legitimacy to organizations by imitating the symbols employed by other organizations, particularly those within the same industry. Further analysis examines the institutionalization and deinstitutionalization of norms in trademark design within industries over time. Finally, the survival of trademarks that deviate from design norms, relative to more normal trademarks, is studied. While such "deviant" trademarks do not seem more likely to be abandoned or cancelled or to expire, further study suggests that trademarks that adhere most strictly to design norms are more likely to survive in use over time.

Darbo objektas Patyčios mokyklinio amžiaus vaikų tarpe. Darbo tikslas Sukurti 6 plakatų ciklą „Patyčios“, skirtą mokyklinio amžiaus, besityčiojantiems vaikams, siekiant parodyti jiems patiems gręsiančias piktadarysčių pasekmes. Darbo uždaviniai 1. Kryptingai išanalizuoti mokslinę literatūrą, siekiant atskleisti patyčių reiškinio esmines charakteristikas tarp bendraamžių. 2. Identifikuoti egzistuojančių patyčių pagrindines priežastis tarp bendraamžių mokykloje. 3. Numatyti galimas pasekmes besityčiojantiems vaikams. 4. Susisteminti informaciją ir ją pritaikyti plakatų temoms. 5. Sukurti plakatų personažus, atspindinčius besityčiojančius vaikus. 6. Rasti kompozicijos, gamybos, medžiagos, konstrukcijos sprendimus. 7. Sukurti lankstinuką – atmintinę. 8. Sukurti pagrindinio personažo, dominuojančio plakatuose, kostiumą, kuris taptu viso darbo simboliu. / The object Ridicule among school-age children. The aim of the 6 create a poster series "twit" for school-age children, to show them the same threat of evil consequences. Graphic Design and Morale: Helpful Widgets and Worthwhile Distractions for the Masculine Chemo Crowd

Brown, Carrie W 09 April 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the possibility that graphic design can have a positive impact on the morale of a male undergoing chemotherapy for testicular cancer. The paper explains the concept of “morale,” why it is vital for patients at a cancer infusion center, and subsequently how graphic design can boost morale. The supporting research fostered a socially-responsible design solution—a mobile application that intertwines design, health, and technology. The application is geared to the patient experience. As such, it can reduce anxiety by providing a distraction in the form of entertainment (as well as providing tools and an anonymous connection for the individual patient to a similar patient population). Furthermore, the application is also designed for research purposes by establishing a framework for collecting measurable data. In turn, this data can be used to enhance the chemotherapy experience—thus contributing to a positive impact on the morale of the cancer patient.

Teaching Teachers: Learning through Graphic Literacy.

Bruzzese, Roberto, info@robertobruzzese.com January 2009 (has links)
Graphic design education has a long history of practitioners leading the development of teaching environments. While these practitioners may develop innovative teaching methods during their educational career, many will never engage with the discipline and literature of pedagogy. Ramsden (2003) asserts that pedagogical principles can help create deeper teaching/learning environments, but this research is all too often disseminated in a lexicon that is not familiar to new graphic design teachers. The research just does not get the message across to those who could benefit most from it. Although graphic design has had difficulties in translating the pedagogical lexicon to its context, it could use its expertise in the visual language to help create a broader understanding of teaching and learning theories and principles for itself and others. The very visual communication skills that we teach could be a more effective way to communicate to educators the necessary pedagogical theory that is to be used in the classroom. This exegesis documents my exploration of pedagogical awareness in graphic design education and how graphic literacy can facilitate this awareness. Through a reflective practice of reading, designing, teaching and conversation, I have uncovered my perceptions and conceptions as a teacher and discovered how some pedagogical principles can help the teaching and learning environment. I have used this knowledge to create an awareness of these principles through the comic language.
