Santos, Walquiria Menna Brusamolin 28 July 2014 (has links)
The objective of this work was to sensitize residents and students in a pilot community for proper separation, disposal and recovery of solid waste in order to improve working conditions and income of recyclable materials collectors from a sorting center. The main methodology was action research, which involved three stages: exploratory, action and evaluation. The working dynamics study in a sorting center based sensitization actions, in exploratory stage. The main link between the source of solid waste and recycling industries is a sorting center that is why this study is important. Moreover, perception diagnosis of separation and recycling of solid waste was made with residents and students in a pilot neighborhood. New study was done in the evaluation phase to find perception changes and to know if sensitization actions interfered in the sorting center bottlenecks diagnosed. The main results showed that steps of sorting and tailings are bottlenecks, suffering interference from domiciliary segregation and deficiency of reverse logistics systems for waste disposal. Sensitization actions with students and residents improved the perception of sending clean and dry recyclable materials to selective collection. Also improved the knowledge of an association of recyclable material collectors and the importance of devoting hazardous wastes such as fluorescent lamps, to resellers, decreasing the receipt of this kind of waste at the sorting center. The results will be used to support discussions with the producers chain toward sustainable waste disposal. Actions have already been replicated in the city throughout municipal and state schools, and homes served by the program of community health workers.

Investigating the antecedents to teaching green information technology (Green IT) : a survey of student teachers in Swaziland

Dlamini, Ricky Nhlanhla 09 1900 (has links)
Summary in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / The natural environment is important for human existence and the ubiquity of Information Technology (IT) has negatively impacted on the natural environment. Green IT offers to address these negative effects. However, since Green IT practices are often not common knowledge, it is vital that they are taught to others. Teachers typically have the skills and opportunities to teach many people. The research problem was the lack of research focusing on the teaching of Green IT in the context of the urgent need for it and teachers’ limited knowledge and competencies relating to Green IT. The study employed a survey research strategy, involving exploratory factor analysis, ANOVA and structural equation modeling (SEM). The main findings indicate that allocating time and resources to improve student teachers’ level of awareness, perceived behavioural control and person-related beliefs would positively influence their intention to teach Green IT, and, in turn, their Green IT teaching. / Imvelo yemvelo ibalulekile ekubeni khona komuntu nokutholakala kobuchwepheshe bezokwazisa kuye kwaba nomthelela omubi emvelweni yemvelo. A Compressed Data Collection System For Use In Wireless Sensor Networks

Erratt, Newlyn S. 06 March 2013 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / One of the most common goals of a wireless sensor network is to collect sensor data. The goal of this thesis is to provide an easy to use and energy-e fficient system for deploying data collection sensor networks. There are numerous challenges associated with deploying a wireless sensor network for collection of sensor data; among these challenges are reducing energy consumption and the fact that users interested in collecting data may not be familiar with software design. This thesis presents a complete system, comprised of the Compression Data-stream Protocol and a general gateway for data collection in wireless sensor networks, which attempts to provide an easy to use, energy efficient and complete system for data collection in sensor networks. The Compressed Data-stream Protocol is a transport layer compression protocol with a primary goal, in this work, to reduce energy consumption. Energy consumption of the radio in wireless sensor network nodes is expensive and the Com-pressed Data-stream Protocol has been shown in simulations to reduce energy used on transmission and reception by around 26%. The general gateway has been designed in such a way as to make customization simple without requiring vast knowledge of sensor networks and software development. This, along with the modular nature of the Compressed Data-stream Protocol, enables the creation of an easy to deploy and easy to configure sensor network for data collection. Findings show that individual components work well and that the system as a whole performs without errors. This system, the components of which will eventually be released as open source, provides a platform for researchers purely interested in the data gathered to deploy a sensor network without being restricted to specific vendors of hardware.

Adopting green information and communication technology: barriers for South African small and medium enterprises

Bok, Elizma Sharee 12 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa / Green information and communication technology (ICT) is viewed as a pioneering initiative that plays a key role in reducing the negative impact of ICT on the environment. The research problem of the study was the low green ICT adoption rate in South African small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The primary objective was to identify the most prominent barriers resulting in this low adoption rate. The first secondary objective was to determine the barrier with the strongest underlying correlation resulting in the low adoption rate of green ICT in South African SMEs. The second secondary objective was to recommend strategies on how to improve the adoption rate of green ICT. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data through electronic and paper-based surveys. A census study was conducted among owners and managers of high-technology-based SMEs located in Gauteng. An exploratory factor analysis was employed to identify the barriers resulting in the low adoption rate of green ICT. These barriers were found to be a lack of funding, awareness, legislation, skills, and knowledge based on complexity and uncertainty. A lack of funding was identified as the most prominent barrier to adopting low green ICT. Although five constructs were discussed in the literature, the overall results presented six components, with the construct of knowledge being made up of two parts – complexity and uncertainty. This study recommends that SMEs align green ICT initiatives with their strategic goals and that government consider more adequate support structures for SMEs. The study confirmed a low green ICT adoption rate in South African SMEs, and more research is required to explore the impact of each of the factors above on the environment. / Ulwazi lwezeMvelo kanye nobuchwepheshe bezokuxhumana (ICT) kuphawuleka njengemizamo yamaqhinga amasha adlala indima esemqoka ekunciphiseni umthelela omubi we-ICT kwezemvelo.
