Self-referential rhetoric : the evolution of the Elizabethan 'wit'Kramer, Yuval January 2017 (has links)
The thesis traces the evolving attitudes towards rhetoric in the highly-rhetorised English-language prose of the late sixteenth century by focusing on a term that was itself subject to significant change: 'wit'. To wit's pre-existing denotations of intellectual acumen, capacity for reason and good judgement was added a novel meaning, related to the capacity for producing lively speech. As a term encompassing widely divergent meanings, many Elizabethan and early Stuart works explored 'wit' as a central theme or treated the term as significant to explorations of the human mind, its capacity for rhetoric, and the social and moral dimensions of this relationship. The research centres on how 'wit' is seen and how it corresponds to rhetorical wittiness as produced in practice, and questions the implications of this for understanding the social and moral dimensions of the authorial wit. By focusing on the early vernacular manuals of rhetoric by author such as Thomas Wilson and Roger Ascham, on Lyly's and Greene's euphuist prose, and on Thomas Lodge's and Sir Philip Sidney's prose defences of poetry, the first half of the thesis explores the term's conceptual ambiguity. Potentially both reformative and deceptive, this ambiguity becomes a useful tool for the author looking to construct a profitable persona as a Wit, or a brilliant-yet-unruly master of rhetoric. The second half of the research notes how 'wit' tends to outlive its usefulness as a multivalent term in later writings when these seek to move away from the social commodification of an author's rhetoric. Examining Sidney's theological and political aims in The New Arcadia, Thomas Nashe's carnivalesque questioning of the idea of profit, and Francis Bacon's systematic interpretation of Nature, the research suggests that rhetoric and 'wit' maintain both their significance and their ambiguity into the seventeenth century. A meta-rhetorical signpost, 'wit' comes to reflect through its use and disuse both the issues at hand and the inherent self-reflexivity of any attempt to deal directly with rhetoric.

Profitability and play in urban satirical pamphlets, 1575-1625Hasler, Rebecca Louise January 2018 (has links)
This thesis reconstructs the genre of urban satirical pamphleteering. It contends that the pamphlets of Robert Greene, Thomas Nashe, Thomas Dekker, Thomas Middleton, and Barnaby Rich are stylistically and generically akin. Writing in a relatively undefined form, these pamphleteers share an interest in describing contemporary London, and employ an experimental style characterised by its satirical energy. In addition, they negotiate a series of tensions between profitability and play. In the early modern period, ‘profit' was variously conceived as financial, moral, or rooted in public service. Pamphleteers attempted to reconcile these senses of profitability. At the same time, they produced playful works that are self-consciously mocking, that incorporate alternative perspectives, and that are generically hybrid. To varying degrees, urban satirical pamphlets can be defined in relation to the concepts of profitability and play. Chapter One introduces the concept of moral profitability through an examination of Elizabethan moralistic pamphlets. In particular, it analyses the anxious response to profitability contained in Philip Stubbes's Anatomie of Abuses (1583). Chapter Two argues that Greene disrupted appeals to totalising profitability, and instead demonstrated the alternative potential of play. Chapter Three examines Nashe's notoriously evasive pamphlets, contending that he embraced play in response to the potential profitlessness of pamphleteering. Chapter Four argues that although Dekker and Middleton rejected absolutist notions of profitability, their pamphlets redirect stylistic play towards compassionate social commentary. Finally, Chapter Five explores Rich's relocation of moralistic conventions in pamphlets that are presented as both honest and mocking. Taken as a whole, this thesis re-evaluates the style and genre of urban satirical pamphleteering. It reveals that this frequently overlooked literary form was deeply invested in defining and critiquing the purpose of literature.

This thesis examines press coverage in the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune of five female politicians in Utah history: Martha Hughes Cannon (1896), Reva Beck Bosone (1948), Karen Shepherd (1992), Enid Greene Waldholtz (1994), and Olene S. Walker (2003). A total of 438 articles were reviewed using qualitative textual analysis. Coverage by candidate varied, though it was not in general overtly biased concerning candidate gender. However, the press did call attention to the gender of candidate and gendered commentary was present. The press also called attention to the rarity of women running for high political office and addressed the ability of candidates to balance the roles of wife/mother/homemaker with a political career. This thesis contributes to the overall understanding of newspaper coverage of female politicians and provides a window into the cultural as well as political history of Utah. Suggestions for further research about media coverage of female politicians are made.

My thesis explores the posthumous literary life in the early modern period by examining responses to ‘dead poets’ shortly after their deaths. Analysing responses to a series of literary figures, I chart a pre-history of literary biography. Overall, I argue for the gradual emergence of a linkage between an individual’s literary output and the personal life that predates the eighteenth century. Chapter 1 frames the critical investigation by contrasting examples of Lives written for authors living before and after my chosen period of specialisation. Both these Lives reflect changed attitudes towards the writing of poets’ lives as a result of wider discourses that the following chapters examine in more detail. Chapter 2 focuses on the events following the death of Robert Greene, an author often described as the first ‘professional’ English writer. The chapter suggests that Greene’s notoriety is for the most part a posthumous construct resulting from printed responses to his death. Chapter 3 is concerned with the problem of reconciling a poet’s life-narrative with the vita activa model and examines potential causes for the ‘gap’ between Sir Philip Sidney’s public life and his works, which continues to pose a challenge for biographers. Chapter 4 examines the evolution of Izaak Walton’s Life of Donne. The ‘life history’ of Walton’s Lives, particularly the Life of Donne, reflects an accidental discovery of a biographical technique that anticipates literary biography. My method is mainly based on bibliographical research, comparing editions and making distinctions between them which have not been made before, while paying particular attention to paratextual materials, such as dedications, prefaces and title pages. By investigating assumptions about individual authors, and also authorship in general, I hope to shed some light on a promising new area of early modern scholarship and direct greater scrutiny towards the assumptions brought into literary biography.

The contextual compass : a literary-historical study of three British women’s travel writing on Africa, 1797 – 1934Visser, Liezel 12 1900 (has links)

those produced by their male counterparts, yet women’s travel writing has only
become an area of academic interest during the past ten to fifteen years.
Previously, women’s travel writing was mostly read for its entertainment value
rather than its academic merit and – as Sara Mills notes in her Discourses of
Difference – appeared almost exclusively in the form of coffee table books or
biographies offering romanticized accounts of heroic, eccentric women who
undertook epic journeys to Africa (4). The growing interest in women’s travel
writing as part of colonial discourse coincides with the emergence of gender
studies and related subjects. The emergence of these areas of academic enquiry
can be attributed to the systematic dismantling of the patriarchal structures,
which previously dominated social and academic domains.
The aim of this study is to examine European women’s travel writing as a
subversive discourse which, while sharing some characteristics with traditional
male-produced travel texts from the colonial era, was informed by the discursive
constraints of femininity. These texts thus differ from male-produced texts in
the sense that, because of the different discursive constraints informing women’s
travel writing, they offer commentary on aspects of Africa and its peoples which
men had omitted in their travel accounts. Three specific texts by British women
who recorded their travels in Africa form the basis of the discussion in this
dissertation: the travel writing of Lady Anne Barnard (South African Cape Colony,
1797 – 1801), Mary Kingsley (West Africa: Gabon and the Congo, 1896 – 1900)
and Barbara Greene (Liberia, 1935). Since, as Mills argues, “feminist textual
theory has restricted itself to the analysis of literary texts and has been
concerned with analysis of the text itself” (12), which limits the extent to which
one can provide interesting, discerning, and relevant comment on women’s
writing, the readings of these texts are not limited to feminist theory of women’s
travel writing.
Social expectations until as recently as the early twentieth century located
women firmly in the domestic sphere. It was almost unthinkable for women to
undertake travels other than the traditional Grand Tour. To attempt to venture
into the predominantly male territory of travel writing was to expose oneself to
harsh criticism and to risk being labelled as eccentric and unfeminine. Thus
women had to find a way of making both their travels and writing seem
acceptable by social standards, while still presenting as true as possible a picture
of Africa in their writing. These constraints of the discourse of femininity on their
texts necessarily make women’s writing seem concerned almost exclusively with
matters of feminine interest. Mills attributes this to women travel writers’
“problematic status, caught between the conflicting demands of the discourse of

op hul tekste plaas, lei noodwendig daartoe dat vroue se skryfwerk as byna
geheel en al beperk tot sake van vroulike belang voorkom. Mills skryf dít toe aan
vroue-reisbeskrywers se “problematic status, caught between the conflicting

Nathanael Greene and the Myth of the Valiant FewSmith, David R. 12 1900 (has links)
Nathan Greene is the Revolutionary Warfare general most associated with unconventional warfare. The historiography of the southern campaign of the revolution uniformly agrees he was a guerrilla leader. Best evidence shows, however, that Nathanael Greene was completely conventional -- that his strategy, operations, tactics, and logistics all strongly resembled that of Washington in the northern theater and of the British commanders against whom he fought in the south. By establishing that Greene was within the mainstream of eighteenth-century military science this dissertation also challenges the prevailing historiography of the American Revolution in general, especially its military aspects. The historiography overwhelmingly argues the myth of the valiant few -- the notion that a minority of colonists persuaded an apathetic majority to follow them in overthrowing the royal government, eking out an improbable victory. Broad and thorough research indicates the Patriot faction in the American Revolution was a clear majority not only throughout the colonies but in each individual colony. Far from the miraculous victory current historiography postulates, American independence was based on the most prosaic of principles -- manpower advantage.
