Avaliação da cimetidina como tratamento de melanomas em equinos tordilhos / Evaluation of Cimetidine as Treatment for Melanomas in Grey Horses

Marina Civita 18 July 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of cimetidine as treatment for melanoma present in the perineal area and ventral tail of Grey horses. Reduction in tumor volume and the capability of the drug to control the appearance of new nodules were evaluated. Thirty two grey horses with ages ranging between sete and 30 years and no predilection of breed or gender were used in this study. All the animals selected had no attempted treatment prior to this study. The animals were divided in two groups: the treatment group, consisting of 21 horses and the control group consisting of 11 animals. Cimetidine was administered at a dosage of 18 mg/kg orally twice a day for a total of ninety days. During the lenght of treatment, the group was evaluated every two weeks, and all the animals were monitored once a month for another 150 days after the end of therapy. The efficacy of the treatment with cimetidine was observed in 11 animals of the treatment group which showed size reduction of the masses during the drug administration period followed by a slight increase and stabilization at lower volumes than the initial measures. In addition, the animals that responded to the treatment presented a very variable and individual response.

Worlds on the edge: the politics of settler resentment on the Saugeen/Bruce Peninsula

Henderson, Phil 21 July 2016 (has links)
Why is it that, at a time when countless state officials are apologizing for historic wrongs and insisting that Canada has entered a period of reconciliation, many settlers continue to act towards indigenous peoples with unabated aggression and resentment? This thesis attempts to explain the continual reproduction of settler colonialism through an investigation of the processes involved in the formation of settlers as political subjects. Developing a Butlerean account of the subject, the author suggests that settlers are produced through colonial regimes as political subjects with deep and often unacknowledged investments in the reproduction of systems of oppression that provide for their material and psychic position of privilege. While the instability inherent in such systems ultimately threatens settlers themselves – as seen in the collapsing North American middle class – the fragility and precarity experienced by settlers who are targeted by neoliberal reforms often leads them to reinvest in, and aggressively defend, those very systems of power as a matter of subjective continuity. The author’s inquiry into these issues emerges from his own experience as a settler, and as an attempt to understand what motivates the aggression and resentment that many elements within his own community direct towards indigenous peoples. Because of these motivations, much of this thesis is grounded in discussions about the ways in which the author’s home community, in the southern Ontario riding of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, is predicated in ongoing acts of colonization. From burial ground reclamations, to mob violence, to the problems inherent in combatting white supremacy without at once critiquing settler colonialism, each of the examples brought forward in this thesis attempts to analyze why this community of settlers seemingly throbs with a collective anger and indignation that is continually directed at the Saugeen Anishinaabek. / Graduate

A Meta-Analytic Examination of Behavioural Parenting Interventions in the Treatment of Children's Behaviour Problems

Bellefontaine, Sarah January 2013 (has links)
The movement towards the provision of evidence-based services has become increasingly important to psychological practice (CPA Task Force on Evidence-Based Practice of Psychological Treatments, 2012; Levant, 2005). One of the key components of this movement is the summarizing and dissemination of important findings to key stakeholders for interventions using techniques such as meta-analysis. Meta-analyses are typically based on reviews of the published literature on a particular topic, but increasingly researchers are acknowledging the importance of examining and including unpublished, grey literature in their reviews in presenting an accurate picture of a body of literature (Hopewell, McDonald, Clarke, & Egger, 2008; McAuley, Pham, Tugwell, & Moher, 2000). However, the inclusion of grey literature in meta-analyses and reviews remains controversial (Coad, Hardicre, & Devitt, 2006; Martin, Perez, Sacristan, & Alvarez, 2005; Seymour, 2010). A number of reviews of behavioural parenting interventions have been conducted. The body of literature in this area continues to grow quickly, and recent meta-analyses in this area have examined only subsets of the literature, thus necessitating an overall examination of all available literature in this area: published and unpublished. The present meta-analysis synthesized the results of 42 published and 6 unpublished behavioural parenting intervention studies conducted between 1966 and 2011. In the first manuscript, treatment efficacy was examined with respect to three different outcomes (parent behaviour, child behaviour, and parent adjustment). I also examined the differential effects of six moderator variables in two categories: child characteristics (child formal diagnostic status and child age) and methodological characteristics (overall quality, comparison group, experimenter allegiance, and publication status). In the second manuscript, I examined both the advantages and challenges of including grey literature in meta-analyses, and explored the use of an innovative search program. I also explored the influence of the inclusion of grey literature on outcomes, including whether effect sizes, sample homogeneity, and publication bias indices are affected by the inclusion of grey literature. Results of the present study confirm the efficacy of behavioural parenting interventions on parent behaviour, child behaviour, and parent adjustment outcomes. Further, I extend the knowledge base through the inclusion of recent reports, grey literature, searches of basic search engines such as Google and Yahoo, and the examination of previously unexplored moderator variables. My results underline the importance of consistent reporting practices in the field and their impact on the availability of evidence for policy-makers, administrators, researchers, clinicians and consumers. I also discuss the implications of these findings for the provision of evidence-based services for parents, knowledge translation, and grey literature.

Repertoár a specifika vokalizace papouška šedého (Psittacus erithacus) / Repertoire and specificity of vocalization in Grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus)

Kůrková, Petra January 2011 (has links)
The aim of the study was to map the repertoire of vocalization of four wild-caught grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus), two males and two females. Data were collected during nine days from June to November 2008 by recording of vocalization in standardized conditions. Recorded sounds (3 052) were categorized according to their characteristics using both visual inspection of spectrograms and listening. We found 70 different call types, which were combined into 18 bigger groups. We found no subject to use the whole repertoire. Important differences were found both between individuals and between males and females. almost all call types were used throuthout the whole period of recording. Model spectrograms of all call types are shown. Key words: grey parrot, Psittacus erithacus, repertoire, vocalization

Release of Immunoreactive Enkephalinergic Substances in the Periaqueductal Grey of the Cat During Fatiguing Isometric Contractions

Williams, C. A., Holtsclaw, L. I., Chiverton, J. A. 11 May 1992 (has links)
Antibody-coated microprobes were used to determine whether immunoreactive enkephalins were released in response to fatiguing isometric contractions of the hind-limb muscles in cats anesthetized with α-chloralose. Contractions were performed by stimulating the tibial nerve via a microprocessor-controlled stimulator. Microprobes were inserted into the periaqueductal grey (P 0.5-1.0 mm) prior to, during and following fatiguing contractions. During fatiguing contractions, mean arterial blood pressure increased by 76 ± 9 mmHg above resting and recovery levels. Levels of immunoreactive enkephalins were elevated in the dorsolateral periaqueductal grey during the isometric contraction when compared to resting levels. It is possible that isometric muscle contraction causes the release of Met-enkephalin-like substances in the periaqueductal grey.

Buried Hair

Radcliffe, Abigail 01 April 2020 (has links) (PDF)
Like every other poet, I’ve always been trying to write the poem living inside of me. The poem of myself. So many iterations of this very poem have come about because of my exploration of the greats and because of my exploration of self. The most predominant themes that come up in my thesis are my Cherokee heritage and culture, my family, and my chosen relationships. Interspersed are poems about hardships I, and others, have faced as women. The constant dilemma of womanhood is certainly exacerbated when “woman” is paired with “non-white.” Through my poems, I’ve tried to explore these themes as authentically and a transparently as possible. This means that occasionally I’ve expressed frustration and anger and fear. Please let this abstract serve as a content warning for mention of sexual assault and an eating disorder. The truth of poetry is that it is the place where we house our traumas, frustrations, and major questions. In this manuscript, I have housed many pieces of myself and I hope that the reader is willing to cry in the crevasses and delight in the peaks with me.

Modellierung des Antriebsstrangs einer Textilmaschine zum Zweck der modellbasierten Steuerung

Sauer, J., Hoppe, F., Bruhm, H. 12 February 2024 (has links)

An improved effective method for generating 3D printable models from medical imaging

Rathod, Gaurav Dilip 16 November 2017 (has links)
Medical practitioners rely heavily on visualization of medical imaging to get a better understanding of the patient's anatomy. Most cancer treatment and surgery today are performed using medical imaging. Medical imaging is therefore of great importance to the medical industry. Medical imaging continues to depend heavily on a series of 2D scans, resulting in a series of 2D photographs being displayed using light boxes and/or computer monitors. Today, these 2D images are increasingly combined into 3D solid models using software. These 3D models can be used for improved visualization and understanding of the problem at hand, including fabricating physical 3D models using additive manufacturing technologies. Generating precise 3D solid models automatically from 2D scans is non-trivial. Geometric and/or topologic errors are common, and often costly manual editing is required to produce 3D solid models that sufficiently reflect the actual underlying human geometry. These errors arise from the ambiguity of converting from 2D data to 3D data, and also from inherent limitations of the .STL fileformat used in additive manufacturing. This thesis proposes a new, robust method for automatically generating 3D models from 2D scanned data (e.g., computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)), where the resulting 3D solid models are specifically generated for use with additive manufacturing. This new method does not rely on complicated procedures such as contour evolution and geometric spline generation, but uses volume reconstruction instead. The advantage of this approach is that the original scan data values are kept intact longer, so that the resulting surface is more accurate. This new method is demonstrated using medical CT data of the human nasal airway system, resulting in physical 3D models fabricated via additive manufacturing. / Master of Science
