Modélisation numérique de la diffusion-corrosion des alliages de zirconium / Finite element modeling of zirconium-based alloys corrosion

Zumpicchiat, Guillaume 16 December 2015 (has links)
In Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR), zirconium-based alloy cladding tubes are immersed in high pressure water containing boron (1000 wt. boron) and lithium (2 wt. ppm) at high temperature (320 °C). The corrosion induced by this environment is mainly due to the oxidation of the zirconium which transforms in zirconia. This phenomenon is one of the limiting factors of the in-pile fuel rod lifetime (~ 5 years). Therefore, it is important to predict the corrosion process of zirconium based alloys in PWR conditions. Zirconium-based alloys oxidation is sub-parabolic inlike the Wagner theory which predicts a parabolic kinetics. Two finite element models were developed to simulate this phenomenon : the diffuse interface model and the sharp interface model. Both simulate parabolic oxidation kinetics. The growth stress effects on oxygen diffusion were studied to explain the gap between theory and experience. Taking into account the influence of the hydrostatic stress and its gradient into the oxygen flux expression, sub-parabolic oxidation kinetics were simulated. The sub-parabolic behavior of the oxidation kinetics can be explained by a non-uniform compressive stress level into the oxide layer. Simulations of oxygen diffusion throught polycristalline layer of zirconia were performed. Zirconia grains are modelled by Voronoï tesselation and a space between grains is meshed to model grain boundaries. These numerical samples are used to study the effect of zirconia microstructure and microtexture on oxygen diffusion. Experimental data from thin foils of zirconia formed on Zircaloy-4 and zirconium hydrure are used in the simulations.

Comportement à l'oxydation des verres métalliques massifs à base de zirconium / Oxidation behaviour of Zr-based bulk metallic glasses

Wang, Bin 22 November 2011 (has links)
The Zr-based bulk metallic glasses, developed since the late 1980s, have very interesting mechanical properties, which can be considered for many applications including working under oxidizing atmosphere conditions at high temperatures. It is therefore interesting to study their oxidation resistance and to characterize the oxide scale formed on alloys’ surface. The fundamental objective of this thesis is to enhance the understanding of the role of various thermodynamic and chemistry parameters on the oxidation behaviour of the Zr-based bulk metallic glasses at high temperature under dry air, to determine the residual stresses in the oxide layer, in comparison with their crystalline alloys with the same chemical composition after an annealing treatment. The oxidation kinetics of these glasses and the crystalline structure of oxide scale ZrO2 depend on the temperature and the oxidation duration: for short periods of oxidation or at a temperature below Tg, the kinetics follows a parabolic law, whereas, if the sample is oxidized at T > Tg, the kinetics can be divided into two parts. The crystalline counterparts are oxidized by a parabolic rule whatever the temperature; for long oxidation duration at a temperature close to Tg, the kinetics becomes more complex because of the crystallisation of the glasses during the oxidation tests. Also the crystalline structure of the oxide layers depends on the oxidation temperature: the oxide layer consists only in tetragonal Zirconia at T < Tg, while monoclinic Zirconia was formed at higher temperature. The mechanism of the formation of the oxide scale is due to both the interior diffusion of Oxygen ions and the external diffusion of Zirconium ions. However the diffusion of Zirconium ions slows gradually during the crystallisation process of the glass matrix. When the crystallisation is completed, the formation of Zirconia is controlled by only the internal diffusion of oxygen ions. The corresponding residual stresses existing in the oxide layer are compressive, both for the metallic glass and counterpart, and they increase linearly with the thickness of the oxide layer. The growth and residual stresses are strongly influenced by the phase transition of Zirconia during oxidation process.

DETERMINAÇÃO DAS DEFORMAÇÕES RESIDUAIS LONGITUDINAIS DECORRENTES DAS TENSÕES DE CRESCIMENTO EM Eucalyptus spp. / DETERMINATION OF LONGITUDINAL RESIDUAL DEFORMATION DUE TO THE STRESS OF GROWTH IN Eucalyptus spp.

Beltrame, Rafael 03 March 2010 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study was developed with the objective to determinate the longitudinal deformations (DRL) resulting from growth stresses in standing and living trees in different clones of Eucalyptus spp. To do this, 12 clones of 9 years-old Eucalyptus spp., were selected, through annual increment means, which were planted at a spacing of 3.0 x 2.7 m. For measurements the variables of this research, 12 trees of each clone were selected, which the some variables were measured: basic density, bark thickness, diameter and total height. The measurements of longitudinal residual strain (DRL) were made in living trees with the extensometer (Growth Strain Gauge) using the CIRADForêt method. The readings were taken at four locations around the trunk of the tree following the guidance of planting (row, between rows). The measurements in the presence of winds were avoid, because with the movement of the tree, the support forces swing inside the trunk, changing the value recorded on the device. For levels of DRL, the results obtained in the study indicated that the clones had large variations between each other, and these had an average value considered high when compared with the literature. The clone 8 produced the lowest levels of deformation and it was considered an excellent genetic material. The clone 1 obtained the highest values of DRL. DRL variation occurred along the circumference of the tree trunk, and it was more pronounced on the east position. Analyzing the correlations among variables, it was found that the DRL was significantly correlated with the bark thickness, diameter and volume of standing tree. Basic density and height didn t have influence on the longitudinal residual strain. Some regression models were adjusted for DRL according to the bark thickness, diameter, height and volume to explain the behavior of this variable for each clone. Just for the basic density was not possible to set a significant model.

Design and performance of cold bent glass

Datsiou, Kyriaki Corinna January 2017 (has links)
The demand for flat glass is high and increasing significantly in the building industry as a direct result of architectural requirements for lightness, transparency and natural light. Current architectural trends require glass in curvilinear forms for smooth free-form façades. Two principal challenges arise from this: to cost-effectively produce the desired curvature and; to ensure its safe performance after exposure to ageing. The recent availability of high strength glass provides an opportunity to address the first challenge by developing cold bent glass. Cold bending involves the straining of relatively thin glass components, at ambient temperatures, and is a low energy and cost effective manner of creating curvilinear forms. However, cold bending is not yet widely established as a reliable method. The aim of this thesis is to develop the understanding of cold bent glass during the bending process and to evaluate its post-ageing performance. This thesis, firstly, investigates the mechanical response of monolithic glass plates during the cold bending process. The stability of cold bent glass is investigated experimentally by bending it in double curved anticlastic shapes. A parametric numerical analysis involves different boundary conditions, geometrical plate characteristics and bending parameters. The principal outcome is that a local instability, now termed cold bending distortion, occurs when certain displacement limits are exceeded and could degrade the optical quality of the glass. An evaluation procedure is also formulated to set limits and aid designers/manufacturers to predict the mechanical response and the optical quality of the glass. Cold bent glass is subjected to permanent bending stresses throughout its service life and therefore, its strength degradation after ageing needs to be quantified. Analytical, experimental and numerical investigations are undertaken in this thesis to identify the most effective method for estimating glass strength (evaluation of destructive tests, required number of specimens, statistical analysis methods and sub-critical crack growth). The limited availability of naturally aged toughened glass and the absence of a reliable ageing standard impede the evaluation of its aged performance. Therefore, a parametric experimental investigation of artificial ageing methods on glass is undertaken in this thesis. A procedure for the evaluation of the strength of aged glass is finally, formulated to allow the selection of artificial ageing parameters that correspond to a target level of erosion. The knowledge on artificial ageing and strength prediction acquired above is finally implemented on different types of glass to determine their strength after ageing and assess their safe use in cold bending / load bearing applications. The investigation showed that fully toughened glass has a superior performance to chemically toughened or annealed glass. Overall, the research presented in this thesis demonstrates that high quality cold bent toughened glass can be created when certain applied displacement limits are respected. These can be used as a safe, cost-effective and energy efficient replacement to the more conventional hot bent glass. However, cold bending / load bearing applications in which the stressed glass surface is exposed to ageing, require glass with a relatively high case depth such as fully toughened or bi-tempered glass.
