Practice Strategies for Martin Ellerby's Euphonium and Baritone Concertos

abstract: Martin Ellerby (b. 1951) is a prominent composer for wind and brass bands, and his Euphonium Concerto and Baritone Concerto are among the best and most challenging works in the euphonium and baritone repertoire. This project aims to assist the performer in learning these important works by utilizing specific practice strategies. Each work has been performed and thoroughly examined by the author in order to develop and offer specific strategies for learning each piece. This project utilizes identification of themes and motives, existing methods, suggested exercises, and suggestions from the premiere performers in order to develop a strategic practice regimen for learning these important works. The discussion of each movement begins with a brief thematic overview to identify the motives and ideas used to construct each movement. The musical content discovered through thematic and motivic identification is used to recommend modified exercises from Arban Complete Method for Trombone and Euphonium edited by Joseph Alessi and Dr. Brian Bowman, Clarke’s Technical Studies for The Cornet by Herbert L. Clarke, The Brass Gym: A Comprehensive Daily Workout for Brass Players by Sam Pilafian and Patrick Sheridan, Scale and Arpeggio Routines for Undergraduate & Graduate College & University Students by Milt Stevens and Brian Bowman, and “The Carmine Caruso Method” as taught by Julie Landsman. Les textiles sont utilisés dans de nombreux dispositifs médicaux extra et intra corporels (pansements, prothèses vasculaires, etc...). La recherche vise à leur apporter des propriétés thérapeutiques (antibactérienne, cicatrisante, régénérative). Parmi les solutions développées on peut transformer le dispositif en un réservoir libérant des substances actives. Le défi est de modifier le support chimiquement inerte selon des procédés non agressifs qui permettent l’incorporation de quantités suffisantes de la molécule active pour constituer une dose thérapeutique efficace dont la libération couvrira la période de cicatrisation. Le travail présenté dans cette thèse décrit une évolution du concept précédemment élaboré par le Laboratoire UMET, basé sur le greffage de cyclodextrines sur des biomatériaux variés pour la libération prolongée de médicaments. Il s’agit de l’application de la technique layer-by-layer (LbL) consistant à élaborer un assemblage multicouche - sur un support textile (PET) par superposition alternée de deux polyélectrolytes de charges opposes, pour former un enrobage des fibres par un film multicouche qui permettra au dispositif libérer un principe actif de manière prolongée. Notre système multicouche est basé sur un polymère anionique de β-cyclodextrine, alternant avec le chitosan (polymère cationique). L’optimisation de la construction LbL du film multicouche a été étudiée en parallèle par spectroscopie optique par guide d’onde (OWLS) et sur le textile ; sa dégradation et la libération de molécules modèles de principes actifs ont été suivies dans différents milieux, et les propriétés biologiques et microbiologiques ont été étudiées. / Textiles are widely used in medical devices which are implantable or not (wound dressing, vascular prosthesis etc…) and researches currently aim to bring them therapeutic properties (antibacterial, healing, regenerative). Among the most efficient solutions, transforming the device into a drug delivery system capable of releasing some drugs or bioactive substances is investigated. The main challenges are firstly to chemically modify such inert materials with soft methods in order to keep their original properties, and secondly to adsorb a sufficient therapeutic dose of the drug that should then be released covering the critical healing period. The concept developed by the UMET laboratory consists of grafting cyclodextrins on several biomaterials for extended drug release. This work presents an evolution of this latter concept thanks to the Layer-by-Layer process. Multilayer assemblies are built on a textile support thanks to alternative adsorptions of polyelectrolytes with opposite charges. It forms a multilayer coating on the fibers which allows the extended release of active molecules. Our multilayer system is based on an anionic polymer of β-cyclodextrin and chitosan (cationic polymer). Multilayer building optimization following the LbL process was simultaneously studied with Optical Waveguide Lightmode Spectroscopy (OWLS) and on textile. Its degradation and release of actives model molecules were followed in different media and biological and microbiological properties were studied.

abstract: This research paper will examine William Bolcom’s compositional style and performance challenges related to Three Popular Rags (1967-1968), Knockout: A Rag (2008), Estela: Rag Latino (2010), and Contentment - A Rag (2015). The aim is to reveal some of his contributions to the revival and expansion of ragtime. The paper includes a brief background on William Bolcom and a history of ragtime music. Differences between the compositional styles of Scott Joplin and Bolcom are discussed through descriptive analysis, focusing on musical forms, rhythms, harmonies, and textures. The performance suggestions include elements of dynamics, articulation, extended piano techniques, and pedal use. A performance guide for trombone quartet: an application of pedagogical concepts and techniques for developing ensembles

Despite the prominence of trombone quartets for student trombonists, there is a lack of pedagogical and performance technique literature related to the genre. Consequently, this project seeks to provide a much-needed resource that developing ensembles and instructors can use to hone their craft and enjoy a more productive quartet experience. This guide for trombone quartets will provide ensembles with fundamental knowledge concerning important aspects of trombone quartet performance such as rehearsal technique, collaboration, logistics, repertoire, and specific musical elements. This essay draws upon an analysis of chamber music literature and resources, interviews with prominent professionals, and the personal experience of the author. The research conducted for the essay informs the resulting guide for performance.

A Recording and Performance Guide for Six New Works for Concert Band Composed by Composers of Underrepresented Communities

abstract: Concert bands as we know them today started in the nineteenth century. The repertoire at that time consisted primarily of orchestral transcriptions penned almost exclusively by people who identified as white male. In the twentieth century, even as the creation of original works for concert band became common place, the rate of compositions written by someone other than a white male was minimal. Composers from other communities were seldom played or introduced into the canon. Today, the instances of concerts including only white male composers are increasingly rare. Diverse and innovative programming have become much more the norm and the opportunities for composers from underrepresented communities have never been greater. This project describes the commissioning and recording process of six new compositions for concert band from composers of traditionally underrepresented communities and backgrounds. A Performer's Guide to the First Two Movements of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Grand Sonata in G Major, Opus 37

The Grand Sonata in G Major, Op.37, composed by Tchaikovsky, is a powerful large-scale composition and a piece of a symphonic scope. However, the sonata did not receive a desired acclaim in the modern repertoire partially due to an obvious lack of performance instructions in the existing editions, which makes the sonata challenging to perform. Thus, in order to reduce the technical challenges and to encourage more frequent performances of the sonata, this dissertation offers a performer's guide that addresses essential elements of pedal indications, phrasing and detailed dynamics, as well as suggestions on voice balancing, agogics, fingering, and hand redistribution. The guide consists of musical examples that are focused on the most challenging sections of the sonata, and is organized in the subsections according to a technique type proposed to facilitate a performance of the sonata. In addition to the examples on application of individual techniques presented in the main body of the dissertation, alternative and more elaborate versions of the suggestions are proposed in the appendices. The dissertation also provides a history of the sonata, and discusses its concept and symphonic principles. Additionally, the work highlights Tchaikovsky's piano style and describes his views on the art of piano performance. A special attention is also given to two musical references repeatedly embedded into the sonata: the bell-like sonorities and Dies irae melody.

In 2017, 82 TLs were surveyed about their level of stress on 30 items representing four sources of job stress: job roles, nature of the job, tourists’ attitudes and behaviors, and external factors. Statistical tests determined that female TLs perceive higher levels of stress from sexual harassment, natural disasters, facilitating the tourists-locals interaction, having limited free time during trips and constant packing/unpacking. Male TLs reported higher levels of stress when tourists supersede their authority. These results indicate the need to amend policy and managerial guidelines to increase gender equity in the tour leading profession. / Revisión por pares

The effect of manufacturing and assembling tolerances on the performance of 1-18 GHz Double Ridged Guide Horn antennas

It is known that the 1-18 GHz Double Ridge Guide Horn (DRGH) antenna is highly sensitive to tolerances in manufacturing. Since a typical DRGH antenna is constructed from a number of individual parts, tolerances in the machining, even when numerically controlled, and errors in the assembly can easily lead to gaps between subsections. Performance deviations, most notably resonances in the boresight gain and VSWR was observed in a number of manufactured 1-18 GHz DRGH antennas. The exact cause of the performance deviations had to be determined in order to identify which sections of the antenna need to be redesigned in such a way that the effects of the manufacturing and assembling tolerances on the performance of typical mass produced DRGH antennas are reduced or eliminated. It was hypothesised that gaps most notable in the waveguide launcher section and especially the coaxial feeding section is the cause of the sharp resonance effects. This hypothesis was confirmed during the study. A highly accurate Method of Moments (MoM) numerical model of the 1-18 GHz DRGH antenna was developed, gaps were then implemented in between various parts of the model and the results observed. Based on these results a new improved 1-18 GHz DRGH antenna was designed with reduced sensitivity to manufacturing tolerances and improved performance. / Dit is alombekend dat die 1-18 GHz Dubbel Rif Golfleier Horing (DRGH) antenna baie sensitief is vir vervaardigings toleransies. 'n Tipiese DRGH antenna bestaan uit verskeie individuele onderdele. Toleransies in vervaardiging, selfs al word die proses numeries beheer, kan dus lei tot spasies tussen verskillende dele. Die waarneming van verswakte werkverrigting, meer spesifiek resonansies in die wins en Spannings Staande Golf Verhouding (SSGV) by 'n aantal vervaardigde 1-18 GHz DRGH antennes het gelei tot verdere studie. Om die 1-18 GHz ontwerp minder sensitief te maak ten opsigte van toleransies, moes die presiese oorsaak van die verswakte werkverrigting bepaal word. Aan die begin van die studie was die vermoede dat spasies in veral die golfleierlanseerder en meer spesifiek die koaksiale voer seksie, die oorsaak is van die resonansies. Die hipotese is in die daaropvolgende ondersoek bevestig. 'n Hoogs akkurate Metode van Momente (MvM) numeriese model is vir die 1-18 GHz DRGH antenna ontwikkel. Spasies is tussen verskeie parte van die model ge-inkorporeer en die resultate is ondersoek. 'n Nuwe verbeterde 1-18 GHz DRGH antenna op die ondersoek gebaseer, is ontwikkel.
