Notes Towards a Mental Breakdown : det teknologiska traumat i J.G. Ballards The Atrocity Exhibition

Nyke, Siri January 2009 (has links)
This study examinates technology's traumatic impact on the male subject in The Atrocity Exhibition by J.G. Ballard. In my analysis I show how the protagonist uses a fetischistic strategy in order to make sense of the trauma that technology embeds. Paradoxically it proves to be the agent of his trauma, but also functions as his shield. The machine is thus in a position of the hinge, the point in a structural system that both enables and deconstruct the system. In the same position we find the woman. She is the very epicentre of the novel and the violence directed towards her is part of a complex problem that I adress. The woman is divided into pieces and fetischized by the male gaze to serve as a solution for his trauma. Hal Foster's notion ”the double logic of prosthesis” constitutes a theoretical base. The model shows how a fetischistic strategy is applied by avant-garde artists to solve the technological trauma that they experience. Both content and composition of The Atrocity Exhibition are inspired by avant-garde practices, I have therefore compared the text with Foster's theory on how the avant-garde problematized the interaction between man and machine. Marshall McLuhan's belief that the human body and technology are inseparable in the era of electronics further helps me to study technology's effect on perception.

The formation of chemical precipitates in the HAL process and its impact on electrostatic separation of zircon and rutile minerals

Prinsloo, Andre 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Process Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / 199 leaves single sided printed, preliminary pages i-vii and numbered pages 1-191. Includes bibliography, list of figures and tables. Digitized using a Hp Scanjet 8250 Scanner to pdf format (OCR). / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study provided scientific proof of the precipitation of iron and other metal species in the HAL circuit at the Mineral Separation Plant of Namakwa Sands. Iron and aluminium hydroxides were the most abundant precipitate complexes that formed in the HAL circuit. Sulphates formed bridges with the iron complexes. It was found that precipitation of iron in the HAL circuit was a function of the pH, ferric ion concentration and temperature of the process water. Experimental work provided abundant evidence that the precipitated iron hydroxide and other species adsorb to the surfaces of zircon and rutile mineral particles due to opposite zeta potentials of the mineral particles and iron hydroxide. These adsorbed species altered the electrostatic potential of the mineral surfaces, which reduced the electrostatic separation efficiency of these minerals. It was determined that an improvement of 7% could be expected if the precipitation and attachment of iron could be minimised. Based on the experimental results, conceptual processes were developed and iterative simulations were set up to determine the optimum solution that would maximise the removal of dissolved iron. This solution would ensure clean mineral surfaces free of any adsorbed precipitates. This process circuit was constructed in May to August 2004 at a total capital cost of R4.8m and removed 99.97% of the total dissolved iron prior to caustic addition. Prime zircon recoveries were increased by 3-7%.

Intelligent Autonomous Data Categorization

Finegan, Edward Graham 01 January 2005 (has links)
The goal of this research was to determine if the results of a simple comparison algorithm (SCA) could be improved by adding a hyperspace analogue to language model of memory (HAL) layer to form NCA. The HAL layer provides contextual data that otherwise would be unavailable for consideration. It was found that NCA did improve the results when compared to SCA alone. However, NCA added complexity problems that limit its practicality. The complexity of this algorithm is On3 where n is equal to the number of unique symbols in the data. While there is a relativity reasonable soft upper bound for the number of unique symbols used in a language, the complexity still limits the uses of the NCA combined algorithm. The conclusion from this research is that NCA can improve results. This research also suggested that the quality of results might increase as more data is processed by NCA.

The King's Speech: A Rhetorical Analysis of Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part I

Sweat, Chance 04 August 2011 (has links)
Recent scholarship has explored the “Machiavellian” actions of Prince Hal in Henry IV, Part 1 ; yet the classical rhetorical pedagogy of Renaissance Britain suggests that the speeches in the play lead to a transformation in Hal that is antithetical to the emergent understanding of Hal as a great manipulator. Falstaff uses the ruse of rhetoric instructor in order to construct a classical rhetorical argument for his own ends, and Henry IV gives a passionate yet formally adept (and classically rhetorical) plea to his son in order to incite change. An analysis of Falstaff and Henry’s arguments as well as Hal’s responses provides the framework of understanding the play not as an example of what has been called “Machiavellianism” but rather as a testament to the power of what Cicero calls the "good man skilled in speaking.”

Design and Implementation of a Multipurpose Radar Sensor

Niklasson, Johan, Åström, Axel January 2019 (has links)
This thesis presents the design and implementation of a multifunctional radar sensor. Utilising microstrip transmission line technology, a front-end receiver has been designed based upon a six-port architecture. Additionally, digital signal processing has been implemented on a microcontroller, enabling processing and extraction of information from the down converted quadrature signals. Results have show that the sensor is capable of operating as both a continuous wave radar and frequency modulated continuous wave radar. Through measurements, it has been established that the sensor is capable of wireless measurements, such as vital signs and vibrations. Furthermore, a graphical user interface has been design, allowing a way of switching between different radar configurations and the presentation of measured data to the user.

Vial, Stéphanie 12 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
