Thomas Hal Phillips: A bio-bibliographyUnknown Date (has links)
"One of the many writers who have contributed to the 'Southern Literary Renaissance' of the past twenty-five or thirty years is a young Mississippi author, Thomas Hal Phillips, whose first novel was written in lieu of a Master's thesis about 1948 and was published in book form in 1950. Since that time he has written four more novels, one of which has been published only in England. In general, these novels have been favorably received by the critics, several of whom have predicted that Mr. Phillips is on the threshold of what will prove to be a very notable career. Although he has been writing only about ten years, his achievement is already substantial. Since Mr. Phillips is already recognized as a worthy novelist and the indications are that his fame is rising rapidly, he seemed a suitable subject for a bio-bibliography. This study has been particularly interesting to the student because Mr. Phillips was born in, lives in, and writes about the region that is native to her as well as to him. Its purpose is to make available for future reference, biographical and bibliographical material which has hitherto not been available in any one place"--Introduction. / "February, 1957." / At head of title: Florida State University. / Typescript. / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Advisor: Sarah Rebecca Reed, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 60-66).

An analysis of American independent cinema from 1990 until 2007, with an emphasis on these films? relationship to the Remarriage Comedies of the 1930s and 1940s. There is a uniquely American tendency to use cinema to reevaluate marriage that was most clearly evident in the Remarriage Comedies of the 1930s and 1940s, this thesis contends that this tendency has emphatically reemerged in American independent cinema since 1990. Using detailed analyses of films that most clearly evidence the persistence of this theme, this thesis explores, in-depth, four films: Hal Hartley?s Trust (1990), Richard Linklater?s Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004), and Aaron Katz?s Quiet City (2007). These four films combine to form a coherent vision of a new perspective on romantic coupling, uniting to together show what they are rebelling against, what their new relationships should be built upon, and, finally, what the new kind of relationship that they present can look like. The definitively American theme that is delineated in these four films not only forms a clear connection to the history of American cinema, but also shows how new generations approach the essential questions implicit in coupling and marriage.

A Metadramatic Reading of Shakespeare's Richard III and Prince HalLu, Shu-nu 27 June 2003 (has links)
Abstract
This thesis aims to analyze metadramatic elements in Shakespearean history plays mainly from the interplay between the actor and the audience. I do not focus on a particular history play but on two characters: Richard III and Prince Hal. Different from most critics of metadrama, I do not search for ruptures in a dramatic text or interpret those ruptures from the deconstructionist¡¦s perspective. Nor do I view metadrama as an established theory when I notice that most critics of metadrama fail to offer a succinct definition to the term. To be specific, metadrama is a kind of dramatic practice on the Renaissance stage.
Furthermore, matadrama is constituted of types of metadramatic modes, and during my research, I gradually realize that self-reference is a peculiar phenomenon in history plays. The function of self-reference is to challenge the audience¡¦s fixed perception of things and to reexamine the part of exaggeration and counterfeit in the historical documents. Shakespeare uses self-reference to develop not only the personality of dramatic personae but also his theatrical perspective of historical characters.¡@By analyzing self-reference, I wish to clarify Shakespeare¡¦s attitude toward historical characters. Also, I shall argue that Shakespeare modifies the historical portrayals of Richard III and Prince Hal and authenticates the theatrical perspective of them.

Ovládací a měřicí jednotka pro generátory plazmatu / Control and measurement unit for plasma generatorsPaulovics, Petr January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the issue of plasma generators. Specificantlly, the work focuses on the design of HMI devices for plasma generators, including the design of the control part of the generator. The main advantage of controlling the plasma generator using an HMI device is the ability to quickly change important parameters. The HMI device allows convenient switching of the generator output frequency without the need to interfere with the wiring, which leads to higher efficiency when working with the plasma generator. Another advantage of the HMI device is the display of all important information on the LCD display. The work deals with the basic theory of plasma and its use, the division of microcontrollers and the description of their peripherals, the selection of components used and their wiring. The last part of the work is devoted to the software of the plasma generator.

Targeting Complex Cyclic Peptides for Synthesis: The Celogentin and Theonellamide FamiliesRobinson, Joshua Wayne 22 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Celogentin C and theonellamide F are a class of natural products that have potential antimitotic behavior. They both contain interesting bicyclic structures with unusual linkages within a central moiety. Celogentin C's highly functionalized tryptophan moiety has two unusual linkages, a β-substituted Leu connection to the C6 of the indole structure that makes up the left-hand ring, and a τ-N connection of the imidazole to the C2 of the indole constructing the right-hand ring. This right-hand ring connection was solved via a novel oxidative coupling procedure developed in our group and the left-hand ring was initially constructed via a radical conjugated addition of an isopropyl group. Due to stereoselective concerns, our group explored hydrogen bond donors as potential catalyst candidates. Unfortunately, there were challenges in limiting the background reaction and obtaining reproducible results. We then designed an alternative route to solve this left-hand ring connection which would have utilized MacMillan asymmetric hydrogenation and α-chlorination procedures. Further work towards a second generation synthesis of the β-Leu-(C6)Trp connection was halted with the publication of two formal syntheses of celogentin C. Theonellamide F contains a τ-L-histidino-D-alanine (τ-HAL) bridging unit that separates the left-and right-hand rings. Previous efforts in the synthesis of this natural product were hindered due to an inefficient regioselective synthesis of τ-HAL. Our proposed synthesis of τ-HAL began with commercially available L- and D-Ser methyl esters which were then chemically transformed and coupled to one another to create a bis-amino subunit. Further preparations afforded us with an important cyclic intermediate which should readily lead to the first regioselective synthesis of a τ-HAL.

Progress Toward Theonellamide FBettale, Jennifer Dawn 05 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Theonellamide is a bicyclic peptide isolated from a marine sponge, which shows interesting biological activity. It contains several unnatural amino acids, among which are (2S,3R)-3-hydroxyasparagine (L-erythro-β-hydroxyasparagine) (β-OHAsn) and τ-L-histindino-D-alanine (τ-HAL). Although there were previous synthetic efforts toward each of these unnatural amino acids, the efforts were not ideal due to expensive starting material, time-consuming steps, and poor regioselectivity. The presented work demonstrates an inexpensive, enantioselective synthesis of β-OHAsn, which can be completed in a matter of weeks, as well as several attempts at a novel regiospecific approach toward τ-HAL, including work on a model study.
