How to manage the bullwhip effect in the supply chain : A case study on Chinese Haier Group

This thesis intended to increase the understanding of bullwhip effect in electrical appliance industry in the Chinese market. In the supply chain management, the bullwhip effect is a phenomenon can never be ignored. The bullwhip effect has being defined as information distortion when orders move form downstream enterprises to the supplier (Lee et al 1997b). The distortion information was amplified step by step, and finally propagates to the enterprise marketing, logistics, manufacture and other fields. The existence of the bullwhip effect weakens the ability to add value and competitiveness of the supply chain. Hence, enterprises must collaborate and jointly mitigate the bullwhip effect to reach groups coexist. This work focus on the electrical appliance industry in China, and based on the successful experience of the case company, Haier Group, to formulate recommendations. Firstly, this research analysis the four causes of the bullwhip effect: demand forecast, price fluctuations, order quantity and short game (Lee et al 1997a). After analyze these causes, this study begins to identify the impacts which the bullwhip effect bring to the members of supply chains. The most obvious impacts can be defined as inaccurate forecasting, inadequate customer service and high inventory cost. Next, the paper evaluate the measures of Haier implement to dampen the bullwhip effect. Information sharing, the key point to solve the problem has been use in Haier. In addition to this, the Just in Time (JIT) strategy which include JIT purchase, JIT delivery and JIT distribution is another important measure for Haier to achieve the goal of mitigate the bullwhip effect.  Overall Every Control and Clear (OEC) management was created by Haier Group and aims to improve the supply chain management, is another countermeasure to deal with the bullwhip effect. Besides, the inventory management also have an important role in gaining the control of bullwhip effect. In summary, the successful experience on dampening the bullwhip effect of Haier can shine a light for electrical appliance industry in China on solving the similar problem. Information sharing is always the key point to mitigate the bullwhip effect, and related instructions should build to remove the barriers of sharing information.

Title: Inventory Control of WEEE (Waste of Electronic and Electrical Equipment) Reverse Logistics in parts of China  --The HEA (household electrical appliances) manufacturers’ perspective   Background: With economic development, the requirement of public for enterprises and products has become increasingly rational. Price is no longer the only consideration of public, they also pay attention to other factors, such as energy conservation. The manufacturers face enormous challenges because of the late start of products recycling in China. So enterprises start to build their own recycling logistics system in order to have more competitive for themselves.   Purpose: The purpose is to describe the methods of inventory controls in the case HEA manufacturers and the problems of inventory controls, find out what problems exsist in the case manufacturers, then analyze what are the origins of these issues for HEA manufacturers as well as propose how these issues can be alleviated, and what methods would be suitable. By solving these research questions, the thesis tries to offer some suggestions about inventory control improvement not only to the cases, but also wider to the whole HEA manufacturers in China.   Method: Multiple - case study as research method has been applied. Specifically, two case companies, Chinese HEA manufacturers, have been selected. Two telephone focused interviews combined with open-ended interviews have been conducted with two related managers. The empirical evidence has been analyzed by using with-in case study and cross-case analysis method, then model analysis is applied.     Results, conclusion: First, the methods are not good enough in the two case companies, a new model is built to help inventory control in the case companies. Second, from external and internal perspective, the origins to cause the problems are a lot, but the main causes are environmental factors, and in busy seasons of these companies. Besides, for doing reverse logistics is a capital costing job, none of the enterprises would like to step in. and reverse logistics is in an uncertainty environment, doing so need to make sure everything clearly and orderly, or costs will be a large amount. The best way of improving inventory control of WEEE reverse logistics in China is that the enterprises standing together to restore the orders.   Limitations and drawbacks: For one thing, there are not enough previous studies references in China, this brought some difficulties of supporting the view points in the thesis. Two empirical cases are not persuasive enough to represent the whole China due to the limitation of the authors’ knowledge and the huge area of China. Nevertheless, the ideal model in model analysis is not that complicated, which means, for more complex problems and processes, the model would be lame.

Cette thèse porte sur le rôle des capacités dynamiques dans le processus d’internationalisation des entreprises chinoises depuis l’entrée de la Chine dans l’Organisation mondiale du commerce en 2001 alors que ces entreprises ne disposaient pas d’avantages concurrentiels préalables clairs par rapport à leurs concurrents occidentaux. L’étude de trois multinationales chinoises – Haier Group, Huawei Technologies et TCL Corporation – est menée dans le cadre théorique des capacités dynamiques (Dynamic Capability View - DCV). Elle vise à identifier la nature et les fondations des capacités dynamiques développées par ces entreprises au cours de leur processus d’internationalisation. Ce processus est caractérisé par la combinaison d'un investissement très significatif en innovation technologique et d’une internationalisation accélérée contribuant conjointement à la création d’un avantage concurrentiel durable. Ces deux dimensions de la stratégie des entreprises bénéficient d'un fort soutien du gouvernement chinois. / This thesis focuses on the role of dynamic capabilities in the internationalization process of Chinese corporations since China’s entry into the World Trade Organization in 2001, even though these companies did not have a clear prior competitive advantage over their Western competitors. The study of three Chinese multinational enterprises – the Haier Group, Huawei Technologies and TCL Corporation – is conducted in the framework of the Dynamic-Capability View (DCV). It aims at identifying the nature and the foundations of the dynamic capabilities developed by these corporations during the internationalization process.This process is characterized by the combination of a significant investment in technological innovation and an accelerated internationalization, jointly contributing to creating and sustaining of competitive advantage. These two elements of the corporate strategies benefit from the strong support of the Chinese government.
