Harley Granville-Barker and the modern English theatre

Salenius, Elmer William January 1951 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / Although Harley Granville-Barker has been considered one of the most significant figures in the modern English theatre ever since the early twentieth century, no comprehensive account of his varied achievements has heretofore been written. It is the purpose of this study to provide such an account--to describe and evaluate his contributions to the theatre as actor, producer, dramatists, and critic. Incorporated inna biographical sketch in this dissertation is an account of Barker's work as an actor. After appearing in various contemporary plays and revivals of Shakespeare, Barker made his greatest success as an actor at the Court Theatre from 1904 to 1907, playing the heroes of many of Shaw's plays and of his own. Judging by contemporary accounts, he excelled in realistic portrayals of men of charm and intellectual passion, and his voice was very effective in lyrical moods as well as in repartee. [Truncated]

Você tem uma moto ou uma Harley? Vínculos com a marca Harley-Davidson em São Paulo / Have you got a motorcycle or a Harley? Connections with the Harley-Davidson brand in São Paulo

Pinto, Fatima Regina de Toledo 07 March 2012 (has links)
This paper is an ethnographic study of the social practices that make the creation processes of meanings and links with the Harley-Davidson brand visible by the riders that attended the rides of the H.O.G - Harley Owners Group - in São Paulo city between May 2009 and February 2011. I try to understand the dimensions of brand involvement by combining the participant observation techniques, interviews and image analysis. This thesis presents an analysis of the H.O.G. organization in São Paulo city and follows the movement of the riders in order to identify the relations that are formed among them and between the riders and the brand. Through the use of film images it is possible to identify the constitution of a frame of reference which inspires the performance of the riders who participate in weekly rides. In this universe the importance of the images is reinforced by the photographs, a common practice in the events and that helped to identify what is understood as Harley Style and the deriving category the harleyro. Belonging to the group is the result of the articulation of several elements that involve the aestheticization of the motorcycle and the rider. Some aspects chosen and shared by the group characterize a hegemonic masculinity that guides the behavior, discourse and the brand consumption experience. I finish this paper reflecting on the concept of brand and the links created with it.

Wicked horses : women's will in Harley 2253

Sapio, Jennifer Leigh 18 December 2013 (has links)
British Library MS Harley 2253 is a unique fourteenth-century miscellany consisting of 140 folios and containing 116 different texts, including lyrics, political poems, fabliaux and other secular and religious texts in verse and prose, Latin, Middle English and Anglo-Norman. While the so-called “Harley Lyrics” popularized by Brook’s edition may have registered widely on scholarly radar, many of the non-English texts in the collection have failed to elicit critical attention. However, these texts are vital points in the narrative of English literary history. In particular, the four Anglo-Norman fabliaux included in Harley 2253 constitute a majority of the extant pre-Chaucerian fabliaux produced on the English isles, and of these, Le Dit de la Gageure and Du Chevalier a La Corbeille have no Old French analogues. This report explores the Anglo-Norman fabliaux in this manuscript, their relationship to the continental French tradition and to the subsequent English (ie. Chaucerian) fabliaux incarnations. Specifically, I argue that representations of female desire – figured as an opposition between “stillness” and doing one’s “will” – surface in these obscene misogynist stories that simultaneously objectify and colonize the female body. “De Clerico et Puella”, Le Dit de la Gageure and Le Chevalier qui fist Les Cuns Parler all include an unmarried female who articulates her sexual desire freely, a sharp contrast to the traditional cuckoldry plot of Old French fabliaux which revolves around a married woman’s illicit affairs. Indeed, the grotesque images of sexual violence and the pornographic images of sexual fulfillment in these pre-Chaucerian fabliaux are not contained by the ecclesiastic context from which these texts originate, but rather they linger and are transformed by the female characters, patrons, readers and hearers of the medieval manuscripts in their domestic contexts. / text
