OPTIMAL FILTER PLACEMENT AND SIZING USING ANT COLONY OPTIMIZATION IN ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

This thesis presents an application of the Ant Colony algorithm for optimizing filter placement and sizing on a radial distribution system to reduce power losses and keep the effective harmonic voltage values and the total harmonic distortion (THD) within prescribed limits. First, a harmonic load flow (HLF) algorithm is performed to demonstrate the effect of harmonic sources on total power loss. Then the Ant Colony algorithm is used in conjunction with HLF to place a selection of filter sizes available at each possible location so that both power loss and THD are minimized. As a result the optimal adjustment of location and size of the filter are determined. Results of computational experiments on standard test systems are presented to demonstrate improvement and effectiveness of using the filters at the optimal location. The methodology used can be easily extended to different distribution network configurations. / Master Thesis

Multiple-Frequency Load Flow Model and Power Flow Tracing in Deregulated Market

With the deregulation of power industry and the market competition, reliable power supply and secured system operation are major concerns of the independent system operator (ISO). Power system operation under deregulated environment is very complicated with various possibilities of decisions involved. A robust and fast network analysis tool is one of important functions of conventional EMS, and this function will be reserved for the on-line analysis to deal with varied behaviors of the new deregulated environment. Firstly, a multiple-frequency three-phase load flow model was developed in this dissertation. There are two new sub-models including the fundamental power flow (FPF) and harmonic frequency power flow (HPF) model. In FPF, models of electrical elements and injected power on buses were treated in the form of current injections in a transmission system. The standard Fourier analysis was used to deal with the harmonic loads to get injection currents. With harmonic currents as equivalent current sources, the HPF can be derived. Besides, the fast assumptive model and decoupled model of FPF and HPF, called AFPF, DFPF and DHPF, were also proposed to improve execution time of the load flow programs. Test results show that the proposed general-purpose methods are better performers than conventional power flow solutions and are very robust. Secondly, the novel method, Upstream Tracing Model (UTM) and Downstream Tracing Model (DTM), to trace the power flow in transmission systems based on the converged AC power flow solution was proposed. The method is formulated by using the transmission network structure, the equivalent current-injection and load-admittances from the engineering viewpoint. Four steps are used to trace the linear relationship between each line flow and generator injection power without any assumption and the counter flow can be traced out, then the power consumption on each load can be represented as generators¡¦ contribution. According to the result of tracing, the loss of each line can be allocated to each generator by using a fair line usage concept. This tracing algorithm can calculate each generator¡¦s contribution quickly and fairly, and can be integrated into the existent tariffs of charging for transmission losses and services.

Propostas de procedimentos para projetar filtros harmônicos a partir de um programa de penetração harmônica, incluindo cálculos de desempenho e de suportabilidade

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This work introduces some proposals for the design of harmonic filters from a harmonic penetration computer program. Such procedures are developed by means of optimized techniques, taking in account, among other aspects, the filtering performance, the filter detuning as well as international guides referring to the supportability of the filter components, as far as voltage, current and power are concerned. The work shows the need for designing filters through a harmonic penetration program. Therefore, the filter parameters can be calculated not only from harmonic currents driven from a single harmonic source (as usually it is made), but also from other existing (and unwanted) harmonic sources eventually present in the system, which could eventually be attracted by the harmonic filter. The work also introduces some studies of cases, in which single tuned filters are compared to damped filter. This study is made in a typical industrial plant, where an arc furnace (that produces characteristic and non-characteristic harmonic) is present. The study shows, among other aspects that, depending on some important requirements made in the design of the filters, a damped filter arrangement can be more advantageous than a single tuned one. / Este trabalho propõe diretrizes para a elaboração de procedimentos sistemáticos que conduzem ao projeto de filtros harmônicos, a partir de um programa de fluxo harmônico. Tais procedimentos são desenvolvidos por meio de técnicas otimizadas, levando-se em conta, dentre outros aspectos, o desempenho de filtragem, a dessintonia dos filtros, bem como normas referentes à suportabilidade dos componentes frente às grandezas elétricas do sistema. A elaboração de um projeto de filtros a partir de um programa de fluxo harmônico foi introduzida com o intuito de se determinar os filtros não somente a partir das correntes harmônicas oriundas de uma determinada carga harmônica (como usualmente é feito), mas também para outras fontes harmônicas porventura existentes no sistema e que, eventualmente, poderão ser indesejavelmente (porém, inevitavelmente) atraídas pelo filtro harmônico. O trabalho também apresenta alguns estudos de casos, nos quais há a comparação de desempenho entre filtros sintonizados e amortecidos. Neste sentido, o trabalho usa o programa digital desenvolvido para apresentar uma análise sobre o uso de filtros sintonizados ou amortecidos, em uma instalação industrial típica de usinas siderúrgicas, que produz correntes harmônicas de ordens não-características, inclusive. Nesse tocante, este estudo de casos mostra, dentre outros aspectos, que, dependendo de certas considerações feitas no projeto dos filtros sintonizados, estes podem até dispensar somas de potência reativa maiores do que os filtros amortecidos. / Mestre em Ciências
