The Development of a Wellness Instrument to Predict the Use of Accident and Health Insurance

Hess, Dixie Lee Cooley 08 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this study was concerned is that of developing an instrument for predicting the use of accident and health insurance. The purposes of the study were to translate selected theoretical descriptions of wellness into discrete components of behavior, to develop a valid and reliable self-report instrument, and to determine the correlation between wellness behaviors and a person's use of accident and health insurance. Content validity was established by a panel of judges, each of whom was selected on the basis of professional concern for the areas of interest in health contained in the instrument. The original instrument of fifty-five items was increased by three items resulting in a fifty-eight item instrument, which was then approved by each of five judges.

Factors affecting performance on a respondent-generated quality of life measure : an evaluation of the SEIQoL-DW

Bruhn, Hanne January 2008 (has links)
The Schedule for the Evaluation of Individual Quality of Life- Direct Weighting measure (SEIQoL-DW, O'Boyle et al., 1995) is increasingly used to assess quality of life (QoL). It involves four stages: participants 1) nominate five cues important to QoL, 2) assign satisfaction ratings, 3) assign relative importance weights; and finally 4) an index score is calculated by combining satisfaction ratings and importance weights.

Pharmacy student perceptions on geriatric quality of life

Loui, James, Mezdo, Ashorena, Patel, Nikita January 2012 (has links)
Class of 2012 Abstract / Specific Aims: To review overall quality of life (QOL) in active geriatric patients and to observe different attitudes toward aging in the student comparison groups. Subjects: Current students, regardless of academic year, attending the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy with a university email account. Methods: Data was collected using an electronic questionnaire. A link to the questionnaire was sent out via email to all University of Arizona, College of Pharmacy students. Another email containing the link to the questionnaire was sent two weeks after the initial notification. The questionnaire consisted of 36 questions requesting students to express their perspective on the health status, mental status and physical abilities of the elderly. Main Results: Geriatric patients tended to have a more positive view on their overall health when compared to students' perceptions of geriatric QOL (86.7% versus 35.7%, P <0.05). Students were also more likely to have the perception that geriatric patients had limitations in regular activities due to physical health and emotional problems when compared to the actual responses of older adults (72.6% versus 40.0%, P <0.05; and 60.0% versus 16.7%, P <0.05; respectively). There was a significant difference (P<0.05) between responses from students and geriatric patients to every question. Conclusions: There appears to be a noteworthy difference between pharmacy student perceptions of geriatric QOL and actual older adult QOL responses that may warrant an educational intervention.

Survival and secondary medical conditions of persons with traumatic spinal cord injury in South Africa

Madasa, Vuyolwethu January 2018 (has links)
Magister Scientiae (Physiotherapy) - MSc(Physio) / Background: A spinal cord injury (SCI) results in a change, either temporary or permanent, in the cord’s normal motor, sensory or autonomic function. In addition, secondary medical complications are common, following an SCI. As such, mortality risk in the spinal cord community remains higher, when compared to the general population. Understanding the complexity of factors related to mortality, remains paramount. Aim: The overarching aim was to assess mortality and secondary medical complications, four years after traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) in the City of Cape Town, South Africa. Secondarily, factors associated with mortality and the development of secondary medical complications were assessed. Methods: A prospective, population-based design was used. The study population consisted of all respondents with TSCI, who were enrolled in an earlier incidence study that was conducted in 2013/2014. For this follow-up study, an inclusive sampling strategy was used. All eligible respondents (N=145), or a family member of the deceased, were initially telephonically contacted and requested to complete a valid and reliable interview-administered questionnaire, to be completed face-to-face, or telephonically. Of those patients who were deceased, a close family member, or former caretaker was asked to participate in this current study. In order to aid the generalisability of the findings to the immediate source population, every non-responder with information available from baseline data collected in 2013/2014, were accounted for. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the cohort and to present the mortality rate, as well as point-prevalence of secondary medical complications. Inferential statistics, namely, bivariate logistic regression analysis, were used to identify factors associated with mortality and the development of secondary medical complications.

The Effect of a Nutrition and Fitness Program on the Dietary Habits, Fitness Level, and Health Status of Ute Indian Youth

Lemon, Alison K. 01 May 1996 (has links)
Lifestyle changes from traditional diet and activities to modem diets high in fat and sugar, and sedentary habits have increased inherited health risk for diabetes and obesity among Native American youth. Nutrition education and physical activity programs have been recommended to help reduce health-risk factors. This study evaluated a summer nutrition education and fitness program for effectiveness in improving the dietary habits, nutrition knowledge, fitness level, and health status of American Indian children ages 9-14 living on or near the Uintah-Ouray Reservation in Uintah and Duchesne Counties of Eastern Utah.
