Yes / This article presents a powerful account of one late-career woman's lived experiences. Little is known about women who continue professional careers into their 50s and beyond. Here insights are offered into her aspirations and expectations, as she reflects upon a career fragmented by gendered caring responsibilities and the implications of ageism and sexism together with health and body for her late-career phase. The narrative enhances understanding of the intersection of age and gender in a context where masculine career norms dominate. It also offers a reflection upon the implications of these themes for late-career women and their employing organizations more generally.

Ten female residents, from the second year (R2), were evaluated, individually and in a previously organized place, by Goldberg General Health Questionnaire - QSG, from ISSL of Lipp and an Ebel Stress Physiologic Reaction Inventory (validated for Brazil), during the second semester of 2011. It was verified that the physiologic reactions to stress were in a high level (N=4), followed by a moderate level (N=3) and a low level (N=2). The salivary cortisol dose showed a level of normalcy and the body reading indicated a diaphragmatic armoring that suggests stress. Life quality showed to be compromised, specially, for showing stress indicators and two being in an exhaustion stage. In conclusion we see the need for a stress coping program oriented by body psychology techniques. / Este estudo objetivou avaliar o estresse de residentes multiprofissionais de saúde, de um hospital universitário, em Goiânia. Dez residentes do sexo feminino, do segundo ano (R2), foram avaliadas, individualmente e em local previamente preparado, por meio do Questionário de Saúde Geral de Goldberg – QSG, do ISSL de Lipp e Inventário de Reações Fisiológicas de Estresse Ebel (validados para o Brasil), durante o segundo semestre de 2011. Verificou-se que as reações fisiológicas ao estresse encontravam-se num nível alto (N=4), seguido pelos níveis moderado (N=3) e baixo (N=2). A dosagem de cortisol salivar mostrou-se na normalidade e a leitura corporal indicou encouraçamento diafragmático sugestivo de estresse. A qualidade de vida mostrou-se comprometida, principalmente, por apresentarem indicadores de estresse, sendo que duas árticipantes estavam na fase de exaustão. Conclui-se pela necessidade de um programa de enfrentamento ao estresse, orientado pelas técnicas de psicoterapia corporal.

Unga män, kroppsideal och sociala media - en intervjustudie om hur hälsobudskap i media framställs bland unga män

Sammanfattning   Bakgrund: Den lätta åtkomsten till sociala medier och fokus kring de manliga och kvinnliga kroppsidealen som framställs i media kan leda till depressioner, ångest och fysisk inaktivitet. Utifrån ett folkhälsoperspektiv är vikten av en djupare kunskap kring detta fenomen väsentlig bland unga kvinnor och män och tidigare studier kring detta bland unga män är få. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att studera unga mäns erfarenheter och uppfattningar om sin hälsa och kroppsideal som framställs på sociala medier. Metod: Studiens genomfördes med en induktiv ansats med semistrukturerade intervjuer som datainsamlingsmetod. Urvalet bestod av sex personer i åldrarna 18–25 år som tränade minst två gånger i veckan. En tematisk analys användes vid analys av materialet. Resultat: Analysen resulterade i ett huvudtema: Sociala media, hälsa och kroppsideal, en växelverkan. Detta huvudtema resulterade i fyra underteman: Hälsa som resurs, ohälsa som hinder, kroppsideal och vägar dit, samt media som påverkansfaktor. I dessa underteman hittades koder som samtliga har en relation till huvudtemat. Slutsats: Hälsa är ett omfattande begrepp som innefattar fler faktorer som bidrar till en hälsosam livsstil. Massmedias framställning av hälsa uppfattas av denna grupp som en fixering av de kroppsliga idealen kontra den subjektiva hälsan. För dessa deltagare är upplevelsen av vilseledande hälsoinformation lättillgänglig medan den korrekta hälsoinformationen uppfattas som svårare att nå. / Abstract   Background: The easy access to social media and a focus on male and female body ideals that are presented in social media can lead to depression, anxiety and physical inactivity. From a public health perspective, the importance of a deeper knowledge of this phenomenon is essential for young women and men, and past studies of this subject among young men are few Aim: The purpose of this study was to study young men’s experiences and perceptions of their own health and body ideals in relation to health and body ideals presented on social media. Method: The study was conducted with an inductive approach with semi-structed interviews as data collection method. The sample consisted of six people between the ages of 18-25 who exercised at least twice a week. The material was analyzed using a thematic analysis. Results: The analysis of the results led to a main theme: Social media, health and body ideals – an interaction. The main theme consists of four sub-themes: Health as a resource, ill health as an obstacle, body ideals and ways to reach them, and media as an impact factor. In these sub-themes, codes were found, each of which relate to the main theme. Conclusion: Health is a comprehensive concept that includes many factors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. The mass media’s production of health images is perceived by interviewed in this study as a fixation of the body ideals versus subjective health. For these participants, the experience of misleading health information is readily available while the correct health information is perceived as more difficult to get ahold of.

Wearable Systems For Health Monitoring Towards Active Aging

Global rise in life expectancy has resulted in an increased demand for affordable healthcare and monitoring services. The advent of miniature and low–power sensor technologies coupled with the emergence of the Internet–of–Things has paved the way towards affordable health monitoring tools in wearable platforms. However, ensuring power–efficient operation, data accuracy and user comfort are critical for such wearable systems. This thesis focuses on the development of accurate and computationally efficient algorithms and low–cost, unobtrusive devices with potential predictive capability for monitoring mobility and cardiac health in a wearable platform. A three–stage complementary filter–based approach is developed to realize a computationally efficient method to estimate sensor orientation in real–time. A gradient descent–based approach is used to estimate the gyroscope integration drift, which is subsequently subtracted from the integrated gyroscope data to get the sensor orientation. This predominantly gyroscope–based orientation estimation approach is least affected by external acceleration and magnetic disturbances. A two–stage complementary filter–based efficient sensor fusion algorithm is developed for real–time monitoring of lower–limb joints that estimates the IMU inclinations in the first stage and uses a gradient descent–based approach in the second stage to estimate the joint angles. The proposed method estimates joint angles primarily from the gyroscope measurements without incorporating the magnetic field measurement, rendering the estimated angles least affected by any external acceleration and insensitive to magnetic disturbances. An IMU–based simple, low–cost and computationally efficient gait–analyzer is developed to track the course of an individual's gait health in a continuous fashion. Continuous monitoring of gait patterns can potentially enable detecting musculoskeletal or neurodegenerative diseases at the early onset. The proposed gait analyzer identifies an anomalous gait with moderate to high accuracy by evaluating the gait features with respect to the baseline clusters corresponding to an individual’s healthy peer group. The adoption of a computationally efficient signal analysis technique renders the analyzer suitable for systems with limited processing capabilities. A flexible dry capacitive electrode and a wireless ECG monitoring system with automatic anomaly detection capability are developed. The flexible capacitive electrode reduces motion artifacts and enables sensing bio–potential over a dielectric material such as cotton cloth. The virtual ground of the electrode allows for obtaining single–lead ECG using two electrodes only. ECG measurements obtained over different types of textile materials and in presence of body movements show comparable performance to other reported ECG monitoring systems. An algorithm is developed separately as a potential extension of the software to realize automatic identification of Atrial Fibrillation from short single–lead ECGs. The association between human gait and cardiac activities is studied. The gait is measured using wearable IMUs and the cardiac activity is measured with a single–lead handheld ECG monitor. Some key cardiac parameters, such as heart rate and heart rate variability and physical parameters, such as age and BMI show good association with gait asymmetry and gait variation. These associations between gait and heart can be useful in realizing low–cost in–home personal monitoring tool for early detecting CVD–related changes in gait features before the CVD symptoms are manifested. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Wearable health monitoring systems can be a viable solution to meet the increased demand for affordable healthcare and monitoring services. However, such systems need to be energy–efficient, accurate and ergonomic to enable long–term monitoring of health reliably while preserving user comfort. In this thesis, we develop efficient algorithms to obtain real–time estimates of on–body sensors' orientation, gait parameters such as stride length, and gait velocity and lower–limb joint angles. Furthermore, we develop a simple, low–cost and computationally efficient gait–analyzer using miniature and low–power inertial motion units to track the health of human gait in a continuous fashion. In addition, we design flexible, dry capacitive electrodes and use them to develop a portable single–lead electrocardiogram (ECG) device. The flexible design ensures better conformity of the electrode to the skin, resulting in better signal quality. The capacitive nature allows for obtaining ECG signals over insulating materials such as cloth, thereby potentially enabling a comfortable means of long–term cardiac health monitoring at home. Besides, we implement an automatic anomaly detection algorithm that detects Atrial Fibrillation with good accuracy from short single–lead ECGs. Finally, we investigate the association between gait and cardiac activities. We observe that some important cardiac signs, such as heart rate and heart rate variability and physical parameters, such as age and BMI show good association with gait asymmetry and gait variation.
