Pre-habilitation program for elective coronary artery bypass graft surgery patients: a pilot projectKehler, Dustin Scott 14 December 2012 (has links)
This study determined whether a pre-operative cardiac “pre-habilitation” (Prehab) program improves the health of elective coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery patients to a greater extent than standard care (StanC). Seventeen elective CABG patients were randomized to StanC (n= 9) or Prehab (n= 8) at Baseline and were followed at 1-2 weeks pre-operatively (Preop) and Three months post-operatively. Functional walking ability was assessed using the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) and 5-meter Gait Speed Test. Baseline data was not different between groups. Patients in StanC did not improve 6MWT scores; whereas Prehab patients improved 6MWT distance by 35% and 39% at Preop and Three months post-operatively, respectively (p<0.05). Gait speed scores were 25% and 27% lower in Prehab patients at Preop and Three months post-operatively, respectively, as compared to StanC (p<0.05). These data suggest that Prehab is an attractive intervention for enhancing functional walking ability before and after elective CABG surgery.

Life choices and life chances: pregnant and early parenting women who use substances.Stengel, Camille May 04 May 2012 (has links)
This thesis is a subset of a larger “parent” project under the direction of my supervisor, Dr. Cecilia Benoit. The purpose of the larger project is to seize an unique research opportunity that has emerged with the development and implementation of the HerWay Home (HWH) program, a community-based initiative for pregnant and early parenting women who face substance use and other challenges in the Greater Victoria Area. My research has capitalized on the pre-implementation phase of the HWH program between 2010-2011. Thirteen in-person semi-structured interviews were conducted with women who would likely be clients for the HWH program, based on their pregnancy experiences,
substance use concerns and other life challenges. The goal of this research has been to explore these women’s pregnancy and postpartum narratives and investigate what, in their view, should be crucial components of the HWH intervention in the short and longterm.
My findings indicate that, consistent with the literature on pregnant and early parenting women facing substance use and other life challenges, a range of complex, intertwined disadvantages exist in their lives that translate into multiple barriers to accessing continuous health and social care during their pregnancy and after the birth of their child. An adapted model of the Health Lifestyle Theory is used to frame the analysis of the data collected from this research. The results from this research support the argument that the life choices of the participants are constrained by structural life chances and socially determined inequities that systematically disadvantage and disempower them. The findings also reveal an implicit sense of agency in the women’s narratives, as well as key specifics about what they view as the main gaps in care and their desired program services. The findings will be relayed to HWH organizers, and used to inform the development and implementation of the program’s services. / Graduate

The prevalence of cancer in the world continues to grow, faster in economically developed countries. According to current scientific knowledge, at least one third of cases could be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle. The present thesis therefore sought to analyze the prevalence of cancer in connection with the lifestyle of the European population, of 63,772 respondents of the SHARE study (The Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe) in fact. The work contains the theoretical description of the problem and the analytical part. The differences in the prevalence of the diseases of the respondents from 16 European countries were monitored in the empirical part. The relation between the incidence of cancer and the groups of diseases defined by alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity and the lifestyle of the respondents was analyzed by the method of binary logistic regression. The survey was expanded by the summarizing indicator of Healthy Lifestyle Index, compiled from smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, body weight, and consumption of fruit and vegetables. The analysis, among other things, showed that with the decline in the healthy lifestyle index, the risk of malignancy in both men and women increased and is more pronounced in males. Škola zdravého a pohybově aktivního životního stylu žáků základní školy v Netolicích / A school for healthy and physically active lifestyle in pupils of elementary school in NetoliceHOLUB, Jan January 2013 (has links)
This thesis focuses on differences in locomotive activity between 13 ? 16 years old boys and girls during one week of 8th and 9th class. Research was carried out between from 18th ? 26th of September 2012 at the Elementary School Bavorovská in Netolice. The research was conducted by means of pedometer Yamax SW-700. The total amount of participants was 34 students, which included 20 boys and 14 girls. Additionally, the students participated in measurements conducted by ActiTrainer accelerometer recorded in the overall number of 56 daily records. In addition to the machine measurements, students were asked to fill in a questionnaire of their sport preferences on the webpage INDARES.COM. The data were analysed in the centre for kinanthropology research at Palacky University in Olomouc. The results do not confirm a hypothesis H1, which suggests that students do not exceed the recommended amount of locomotive activity. The data obtained during my research confirm a hypothesis H2, which states that boys are more active in their physical activities than girls. Additionally, a hypothesis H3 is also confirmed as boys prefer to participate in collective sports and girls in rhythmic and dancing activities. Hypothesis 4 is also considered to be correct since it has been proven that boys are more active than girls in terms of their movement during the class break. This thesis was produced as a part of research investigation MŠMT č. 619895221 ?Locomotive activity and inactivity of inhabitants of Czech Republic in the context of behavioural changes.?

Vědomostní úroveň o problematice zdraví u studentů, adolescentů na gymnasiu / The level of knowledge about health issues for students at the secondary school adolescentsBUZKOVÁ, Aneta January 2014 (has links)
The main goal of this thesis is to map the knowledge of students, adolescents, including human biology, physical education, sports and nutrition and then compare these results with similar surveys carried out in the territory of the Czech Republic. I also tried to verify, whether the knowledge level of health and physical activity be reflected in our observance of healthy lifestyle of the adolescents. Two high schools were actively involved in the research a grammar school in Milevsko and Tábor. A total number of 132 completed student´s tests of knowledge on the issue of health and physical activity was collected along with the same number of enclosed questionnaires about healthy lifestyles. The results showed that the knowledge levels do not differ dramatically based on students' gender. They also showed that they are proportionally reflected in the life style of the students.
