Governance in Global Production Networks : managing environmental health risks in the personal computer production chain

Raj-Reichert, Gale January 2012 (has links)
Manufacturing activities in the personal computer industry are organised in a complex global production network (GPN) led by a variety of branded global lead firms. Increasingly, considerations on environmental, health and safety governance have emerged as an important element to the management and co-ordination of these production networks by lead firms. Within the personal computer GPN, the printed circuit board (PCB) industry is commonly subcontracted by branded firms to suppliers located in developing countries such as Penang, Malaysia. The activities of PCB manufacturing and assembly involve the use of various hazardous chemicals that pose environmental health risks to workers. This research aims to understand how governance over environmental health is implemented in the GPN led by Hewlett Packard (HP) and in particular with lower tier suppliers in the printed circuit board industry in Penang, Malaysia. The main research question is: how are environmental health concerns managed by governance mechanisms in GPNs that involve the relocation of harmful manufacturing activities to developing countries? Governance mechanisms within the GPN include private standards and codes of conduct, which are supplemented by government regulation in the host country. Governance outcomes are shaped by relations between firms and non-firm actors such as government agencies, civil society organisations and trade unions. Therefore, a GPN analytical framework is utilised to understand more specifically how a variety of firm and non-firm actors and their relationships and power dynamics influence governance practices in the industry. Fieldwork for the research was conducted in 2008 and 2010 and consisted of semi-structured in-person and telephone interviews with thirty seven key actors in Malaysia, Western Europe, and the United States. Key informants included HP; first tier suppliers to HP and second tier suppliers located in Penang, Malaysia; global and Malaysian civil society organisations; an international federation of trade unions and Malaysian trade unions; Malaysian government agencies; and a politician, occupational health doctor and journalist in Penang. The findings from this research show that a combination of factors results in a weak scenario for governing environmental health risks of suppliers in Penang. These factors are resource constraints among suppliers; weak host country capacity and willingness to regulate; weak knowledge of environmental health risks by firms and regulatory agencies; and weak contestation by external stakeholders. Findings from the analysis also show the need to have differentiated views of power amongst different actor relationships in order to understand the complexity of GPN governance.

An intelligent multi-terminal interface.

Peplow, Roger Charles Samuel. January 1987 (has links)
The document describes the development of a micro-processor based terminal multiplexer to connect four terminals to a standard Hewlett Packard series 1000 mini-computer. The project was required to fulfill the dual roll of both increasing the number of terminals that the HPI000 could support and of reducing the peripheral load on the host CPU. The final product occupied a standard 200mm square HP size interface card and used an 8085 micro-processor and several 8085 family peripheral chips to provide four full duplex serial channels and a high speed data link with the host. A multi-tasking executive was written to control the multiplexer software which was finally implemented as 15 independent tasks occupying 8 kilo-bytes of eprom. The software was written to perform all terminal interaction and editing in order to reduce the host CPU involvement to a single interrupt per record. The resultant interface proved capable of handling an aggregate throughput in excess of 4000 characters per second which was sufficient to cope with all four terminals running at 9600 bits per second, even when all four were transferring in burst mode. The interface also proved to be between five and eighteen times less demanding on the host than the two standard Hewlett Packard interfaces then available. When compared to the low cost HP12531 interface, the multiplexer increased the 9600b/s terminal handling capability of the host from 3 terminals to 52. / Thesis (M.Sc.-Electronic Engineering)-University of Natal, 1987.

張惠琳, Chang, Marlene Unknown Date (has links)
Hewlett-Packard was the leader of computer for many years but losing its core-competence recent years, this thesis is trying to study the root cause internally based on the strategy management perspective. From external marketing environment to internal functional level analysis to support the key reason on Hewlett-Packard strategy management issues. In the competitive market of computer industry, We can see the old companions like Dell and Sony are no longer as profitable as they were used to be, Dell has gone off market since 2013, and Sony announced they will leave the PC market. In this thesis, we divide chapters into functional level strategy and business level strategy to demonstrate how HP is cope with current trend and what decisions have been made. Hewlett-Packard is gradually losing its competitive strength due to several reasons. For instance, R&D design products with less innovation but cost-oriented, marketing do not position product as premium product in the market, and supply chain controls inventory less efficiently.

工業標準伺服器事業在台灣惠普及康柏公司合併前後公司組織及營運策略的研究

鍾易良 Unknown Date (has links)
The Graduate Institute of Business Administration National ChengChi University The Study of organization and business strategies of Industry Standard Server in Hewlett Packard Taiwan before and after the merger of Hewlett Packard and Compaq Computer On September 4th, 2001, Carly Fiorina, CEO of Hewlett Packard announced the merger of Hewlett Packard and Compaq Computer at USD25 billion dollars. This amount was in fact twice as much as the biggest merger that had ever happened in IT industry, and moreover, it is the most important decision that has been made in HP’s 63-year history. After the merger, Hewlett Packard has become the worldwide number two computer company, an empire where the sun never sets. The annual revenue of new Hewlett Packard totals 87.4 billion dollars, only second to IBM. This research is to pick the product “Industry Standard Server” that belongs to the business unit of Enterprise Solution Group in Hewlett Packard Taiwan to do the case study. The theories I will be using are: 1) the three dimensions of business strategy: a) business scope; b) core resources; and c) relationship network and 2) the four competitive strategies: a) value and effectiveness; b) position and strength; c) group and core competence; d) industry and differentiation Through the change of the organization and its business strategy before and after the merger, I will come up how the three companies – Hewlett Packard, Compaq and the New Hewlett Packard have their own business strategies and will also provide suggestions to related questions. By the end of this research, I hope some points can be made and provided to companies that are planning to have their horizontal integration. I will do so by observing and analyzing from the following three aspects: 1) To analyze the three companies by the three dimensions of business strategy 2) To analyze competition advantages of the three companies, before and after the merger. 3) To analyze how Industry Standard Server Business Unit in Hewlett Packard Taiwan achieves Synergy through the merger of the two companies Finally, the intention of this research is to help and to provide advise to those companies that are planning to have their horizontal integration, and hopefully through this research, a shorten learning curve will benefit them and through such integration, synergy will be seen.
