The Dendrochronology of the Reconstruction of Kinishba

Baxter, Laura, Baird, Kate J., Pedicino, Lisa C., Scotti, Karriaunna January 1997 (has links)
Dendroarchaeology is often discussed with reference to prehistoric contexts; however, it is equally relevant in historical contexts. Dendroarchaeological analysis independently dates the modem reconstruction of prehistoric Kinishba Pueblo with higher resolution than known documentary sources provide and illuminates reroofing practices. Kinishba is a large Mountain Mogollon pueblo on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in east-central Arizona. Historically, the reconstructed Kinishba is attributed to the 1930s work of Byron Cummings. Nineteen dates from structural beams in nine rooms of the pueblo form a tight cluster with a strong terminal peak at 1950. This peak combined with beam and architectural attributes provides evidence for an undocumented, extensive reroofing episode. Thus, the target event was not the building of reconstructed rooms as originally expected, but replacement of the original reconstructed roofs. This study illustrates two important dendroarchaeological points. First, preconceived ideas, even if based on sound research, should not influence sample dating, which should be free of bias. Second, this study illustrates the importance of tree-ring dates in archaeology and the potential conflict between other types of data and tree-ring dates.

A funding source guide for historic preservation projects in South Dakota

Skypala, Madeleine January 1997 (has links)
Budget cuts for historic preservation and other humanities based projects are occurring on the federal, state, and local levels. Funding sources that historically supported these types of projects are being scaled back and eliminated. Given the current political trends, this situation will probably continue for the next several years. It is, therefore, imperative that funding sources are identified and solicited if current preservation efforts are to continue. This creative project is a funding source guidebook for historic preservation projects for the historic preservation constituency of South Dakota. This guidebook explains grants and the grant solicitation process, identifies potential funding sources and programs for historic preservation projects, and gives information about grant, funding source, and proposal writing. / Department of Architecture

Green preservation : achieving LEED-EB certification while adhering to the Secretary of the Interior's standards for the treatment of historic properties

Drake, Scott A. January 2007 (has links)
This study assesses the growing field of green building for its potential impact on the field of historic preservation. It is designed to provide a starting point for building owners and professionals in the industry seeking to gain LEED-EB certification on a historic structure. The potential impact of each LEED-EB credit to adversely affect historic fabric is evaluated for preservation, rehabilitation and reconstruction projects as defined by the Secretary of the Interior. Strategies for gaining certification for historic structures are discussed. Recommendations for further growth between the fields of historic preservation and green building are given. Early projects that combine historic preservation and green building are briefly discussed. / Department of Architecture

A 548-Year Tree-Ring Chronology Of Oak (Quercus Spp.) For Southeast Slovenia And Its Significance As a Dating Tool And Climate Archive

Čufar, Katarina, Luis, Martín De, Zupančič, Martin, Eckstein, Dieter 06 1900 (has links)
Tree-ring series of oak, from both living trees (Quercus petraea and Q. robur) and historic timbers in southeastern Slovenia were assembled into a 548-year regional chronology spanning the period A.D. 1456–2003. It is currently the longest and the most replicated oak chronology in this part of Europe located at the transition between Mediterranean, Alpine and continental climatic influence. The chronology correlated significantly with regional and local chronologies up to 700 km away in Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Czech Republic and southern Germany. It also showed good ‘‘heteroconnection’’, i.e. agreement with chronologies of beech (Fagus sylvatica), ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and silver fir (Abies alba) in Slovenia. A preliminary dendroclimatic analysis shows that precipitation and temperature in June accounted for a high amount of variance (r250.51) in the tree-ring widths. The chronology thus contains considerable potential as a climate archive. We also present its use as a tool for the dating of wooden objects of the cultural heritage. Moreover, the chronology can be a point of reference for building tree-ring chronologies in neighboring regions.

Coordinating Code in Virginia’s Historic Districts

Gruber, Drew 08 December 2010 (has links)
This thesis explores the evolution and limitations of regulatory and historic district overlay zones and the inherent conflicts between the two as applied in Virginia. Historic district overlay zoning and the establishment of local historic districts and design review boards has developed in response to the failures of traditional zoning techniques to adequately protect the architectural character of Virginia’s historic urban landscapes. After almost fifty years of practice and improvement in the fields of urban planning and historic preservation, synchronizing regulatory and historic district overlay zones still presents difficulties for municipal administrators. Several Virginia jurisdictions are highlighted in the thesis to provide an insight into the application of these planning and preservation paradigms. These different municipal codes will provide a sample set of the most common problems which exist between regulatory and historic district overlay zoning. These issues include-design, nonconforming uses, code and conflicting ordinances, appeals, and demolitions by neglect clauses. While this thesis seeks to identify the most common problems found between regulatory and historic districts within Virginia it is not comprehensive nor does it provide recommendations for how to address the inherent conflicts.

Training in the Historic Building Trades of New Orleans: An Inventory and Analysis

Hackett, Nyssa 20 May 2011 (has links)
The unique cultural techniques of the historic building trades of New Orleans are currently at risk of being lost due to a lack of new master craftsmen and the demise of the current generation of master craftsmen. The purpose of this study is twofold: to analyze the historic transmission of the trades in New Orleans through the lens of workforce development and to inventory and analyze current programs that teach the trades. Analysis of historic training in the trades and best practices in workforce development inform an assessment of the strengths of current programs and their ability to enhance the supply of master craftsmen. Additional analysis of workforce development practices and programmatic strengths combine to illustrate room introducing career pathways and intermediaries into the current system of training. This system of training in New Orleans is fragmented and insufficient to truly enhance supply; however, programmatic strengths present opportunities for improvement.

Da Capela Carmelita a Catedral Metropolitana de Manaus (AM) $$b uma arqueologia da arquitetura / Carmelite chapel the cathedral Metropolitan of Manaus $$b an archaeology of the architecture

Corrêa, Marcus Vinicius de Miranda 03 October 2005 (has links)
The Cathedral of Manaus, started as a Carmelite chapel constructed in century XVII and after some reconstructions, it received some additions during the years until reaching the current dimension.
