THE INFLUENCE OF STATE PERFORMANCE-BASED FUNDING ON PUBLIC HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES: A CASE STUDY OF RACE AND POWER

Unknown Date (has links)
More than 30 states currently implement some form of outcomes or performancebased funding for public two-year and/or four-year institutions of higher education. Thirteen of these states have public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Every state’s higher education governance and power relationships are a unique compilation of internal and external entities such as the governor, governing boards, policymakers, higher education staff and advisors, and the institution’s administration, faculty, students, and alumni. Each entity holds power over the HBCU or its state policy context. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2019. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Customer Relationship Management Strategies at Historically Black Colleges and Universities

McDonald, Johnny Balman 01 January 2017 (has links)
Historically Black colleges and university managers lack sufficient understanding of customer-relationship management strategies to create high enrollment rates leading to increased financial stability. The focus of this qualitative single case study was to explore customer-relationship management strategies managers use to improve financial performance from historically Black colleges and universities located within the state of Georgia with a student enrollment that exceeds 2,000 students. The conceptual framework for this study was the general system theory. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and employee handbooks. The data analysis consisted of compiling the data, disassembling the data into common codes, reassembling the data into themes, interpreting the meaning, and reporting the themes. The use of member checking and methodological triangulation increased the trustworthiness of the study. Themes that emerged were efficiencies with technology, student retention, and financial performance. Using up to date and effective technology including customer relationship management, and creating strategies to focus on student retention can help educational organizations improve their financial performance. The potential for social change includes the opportunity to increase the graduation and student retention rates to provide more opportunities for local business leaders and enhance the economic sustainability of local communities.

Examining the first-year experiences and perceptions of sense of belonging among Mexican American students enrolled in a Texas HBCU

Ozuna, Taryn Gallego 15 November 2012 (has links)
The growing Latino population is directly affecting institutions of higher education. Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs), whose stated missions do not specifically address Latinos, are becoming Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). As HSIs continue to emerge across the country, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are also responding to demographic shifts, especially in Texas. Although their historic mission focuses on educating African Americans, some Texas HBCU presidents and administrators maintain that their supportive campus environment could serve as a possible opportunity for Latino student success. HBCU outreach efforts offer a variety of areas for further investigation, but the intent of this study was to examine the first, critical year and perceptions of sense of belonging. Furthermore, since Mexican Americans represent the majority of Latinos in Texas, indeed the country, this qualitative study specifically focused on the first-year experiences of Mexican Americans in a Texas HBCU. The primary methods for data collection included two semi-structured one-on-one interviews, a student questionnaire, campus observations, and analytic memos. Thus, the current study sought to fully document the first-year experience and perceptions of sense of belonging as recounted by second- to fifth-year Mexican American students enrolled in a Texas HBCU. / text

HOW, WHEN, AND FOR WHOM? TOWARD A NUANCED UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATION BETWEEN AFRICAN AMERICAN ETHNIC IDENTITY AND MENTAL HEALTH

Acevedo, Ignacio David 01 January 2008 (has links)
This study uses a causal modeling approach based on structural equation modeling to examine specific hypotheses regarding the relation among ethnic identity, its components, and various mental health outcomes in African American emerging adults. Data was provided by college students at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Results did not support a relation between ethnic identity components and adverse mental health. Ethnic identity components were related to positive mental health outcomes; however, this relation differed between gender groups. Among females, the ethnic identity component traditionally labeled ethnic commitment significantly predicted both positive mental health outcomes included in this study. Among males, only life satisfaction was predicted by ethnic identity, and this relation appeared to depend on the component of ethnic identity traditionally labeled ethnic exploration. Findings are discussed in terms of their implications for the current understanding of ethnic identity and its development among African American emerging adults.

Energieffektivisering i kulturhistoriskt värdefull bebyggelse : Ett förslag på modell för utvärdering av energieffektiviserande åtgärder / Energy efficiency in historically valuable buildings : A proposed model for evaluation of actions regarding energy efficiency

Lindström, Ellen, Ideskog, Jakob January 2014 (has links)
The Swedish Parliament has decided that the energy consumption in buildings must be reduced. This also applies to existing buildings to which the historically valuable buildings belong. When improving energy efficiency in historically valuable buildings managers often experience that the process of choosing acts takes too long time because there is no rational way to compare different consequences of the acts. Antiquarians on the other hand, often have a different opinion and experiencing that managers often look more to the potential of savings rather than the impact on the cultural value. The aim of the essay was to make the comparison of energy efficiency acts in the historically valuable buildings more transparent for managers. Through literature study, document analysis, interviews and case study the following questions has been answered: - What cultural-historical factors should be taken into account at improving energy efficiency in the historically valuable buildings? - How can energy-saving acts be evaluated in a model which takes into account the potential of energy saving and the cultural factors identified in question 1? - How should the model from question 2 be used for comparisons of possible actions in an existing building? Cultural-historical factors were identified and formed the basis for the model that was developed. For each factor criteria was connected with different point levels for evaluation. A matrix was developed to visualize the result. To demonstrate the function of the model a case study was carried out where the model was used in an existing building. To enable evaluation of selected acts both observations and calculations were performed. The case study was performed at Länsresidenset in Jönköping. The results of the study shows that Reversibility, Long-sightedness, Impact on visual impressions and experience, Impact on historically valuable parts and details, and Other is important cultural factors to consider when improving energy efficiency in historically valuable buildings. Criteria for evaluation should be formulated carefully and generally to fit each type of action and to avoid subjective assessment. To obtain a perspicuous comparison colors should be used for grading. Furthermore, weighting should be used to adjust the priority level of each individual factor in a specific building. After evaluation of actions in a specific building has been done specialists in various fields should be consulted for final selection of acts.

Construction of, and performance on, the early drum kit

Archibald, Paul January 2018 (has links)
For over one hundred years the drum kit has been a driving force in shaping popular music, yet in popular culture the kit is not taken as seriously as other instruments, with drummer jokes abound. This hierarchy is reflected across academia and music literature, where the drum kit is least discussed amongst other instruments commonly found in popular music. Looking within the context of early jazz—one of the first styles of music the drum kit helped shape—historians and publishers were keen to ensure leading horn players told their story, while the drummers, who rarely secured similar levels of fame or recognition, had comparatively little chance to record their story. Detailed histories of the instrument are therefore scarce, incomplete, or riddled with inaccuracies and misunderstandings. This thesis presents a clear and detailed history of the instrument, from its beginnings to its early form in the mid 1930s. I then examine how the early drum kit was represented at the time through recordings, one of the most important methods of documenting how this instrument was used. Finally, I investigate how drummers performing on early drum kits today approach their playing, and how they deal with the problems identified in this thesis. In doing so I used optical character recognition (OCR) on digital archives, newspapers, interviews, magazines, catalogues and photographs from the early twentieth century, much of which has only become available in the past few years. Using these primary sources, I have constructed a reliable history and have unearthed new sources that shed light on the history and development of the instrument. Furthermore, through my own experiences and interviews of current early drum kit players, I have shown how this instrument in its early form is played, and how it differs from the instrument we know today.

Matschulat, Josias January 2015 (has links)
This paper compares the two recordings made by the pianist András Schiff in 1984 and 2011, respectively, of the First Book of The Well-Tempered Clavier by J. S. Bach, and discusses the interviews granted by the pianist to the specialized press where he exposes his approach to the interpretation of Bach's music. The paper aims to support the hypothesis that the pianist adopts in his latest recording an approach called Rhetorical Style by Haynes (2007) and Golomb (2004; 2008) which, according to the authors, is closer to the Baroque Music performance style. By analyzing the aforementioned recordings and interviews, it is concluded that Schiff adopts principles of the Rhetorical Style in his performance, and also implicitly acknowledges in his interviews the relevance of rhetorical principles for the execution of Bach's music. Also discussed are the pianist's arguments in favor of using the piano as an appropriate instrument for the execution of Bach's music and against the use of the instrument' sustain pedal, in addition to Schiff's relationship with the Historically Informed Performance movement.
