The Tally Ho Shear Zone: implications for the tectonic evolution of the western margin of Stikinia, Southern Yukon Territory, Canada

Tizzard, Amy 06 March 2009 (has links)
The Tally Ho shear zone (THSZ) is a 40-kilometre long, northwest-striking assemblage of highly-deformed rocks outcropping along the western margin of Stikinia in southern Yukon. The location of the THSZ adjacent to the boundary between the oceanic Stikine Terrane and pericratonic Nisling Assemblage of the Yukon-Tanana Terrane provides an opportunity to examine the tectonic significance of a terrane-marginal high-strain structure. Detailed geological mapping along the THSZ and adjacent rocks indicates that the shear zone is a crustal-scale thrust fault that places deep-seated arc rocks of Stikinia up-section and to the east onto a package of upper crustal volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of the Upper Triassic Lewes River Group. Timing of movement along the THSZ is constrained by U-Pb zircon age determinations of a deformed section of cumulate leucogabbro in the hangingwall of the shear zone (208 ± 4.3 Ma) and by a post-kinematic cross-cutting megacrystic granite intrusion (~173 Ma). Positive Nd values of Stikine magmatic rocks (+4.5 to +6.7) indicate magmas forming the oceanic terrane were formed with little to no input of continental crust until around the time of intrusion of a megacrystic granite unit in the mid-Jurassic (Nd -4.0). The THSZ is therefore interpreted to have formed in response to the thick-skinned collision and underpinning of the Nisling Assemblage beneath western Stikinia in the Early Jurassic resulting in the imbrication of the Stikine magmatic arc along the THSZ.

Survey of Selected Contemporary Taiwanese Female Composers of Music for Solo Piano

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this project was to examine the lives and solo piano works of four members of the early generation of female composers in Taiwan. These four women were born between 1950 and 1960, began to appear on the Taiwanese musical scene after 1980, and were still active as composers at the time of this study. They include Fan-Ling Su (b. 1955), Hwei-Lee Chang (b. 1956), Shyh-Ji Pan-Chew (b. 1957), and Kwang-I Ying (b. 1960). Detailed biographical information on the four composers is presented and discussed. In addition, the musical form and features of all solo piano works at all levels by the four composers are analyzed, and the musical characteristics of each composer's work are discussed. The biography of a fifth composer, Wei-Ho Dai (b. 1950), is also discussed but is placed in the Appendices because her piano music could not be located. This research paper is presented in six chapters: (1) Prologue; the life and music of (2) Fan-Ling Su, (3) Hwei-Lee Chang, (4) Shyh-Ji Pan-Chew, and (5) Kwang-I Ying; and (6) Conclusion. The Prologue provides an overview of the development of Western classical music in Taiwan, a review of extant literature on the selected composers and their music, and the development of piano music in Taiwan. The Conclusion is comprised of comparisons of the four composers' music, including their personal interests and preferences as exhibited in their music. For example, all of the composers have used atonality in their music. Two of the composers, Fan-Ling Su and Kwang-I Ying, openly apply Chinese elements in their piano works, while Hwei-Lee Chang tries to avoid direct use of the Chinese pentatonic scale. The piano works of Hwei-Lee Chang and Shyh-Ji Pan-Chew are chromatic and atonal, and show an economical usage of material. Biographical information on Wei-Ho Dai and an overview of Taiwanese history are presented in the Appendices. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2011

Symetrie CR sub-Laplac / Symmetries of the CR sub-Laplacian

Vlasáková, Zuzana January 2010 (has links)
Title: Symmetries of the CR sub-Laplacian Author: Zuzana Vlasáková Department: Charles University Institute of Mathematics Supervisor: Prof. RNDr. Vladimír Souček, DrSc. Author's e-mail address: zuzana.kasarova@email.cz Supervisor's e-mail address: soucek@karlin.mff.cuni.cz Abstract: The aim of this work is to characterize the vector space of symme- try operators of the CR sub-Laplacian. To do this, we define a CR structure on some distinguished submanifold of Cn+1 (it is in fact the big cell in the CR sphere) and write down the CR sub-Laplacian on it. We also define the symmetries of the CR sub-Laplacian in general and using the ambient con- struction, which we introduce in the sequel, we construct all of them. Keywords: CR geometry, CR sub-Laplacian, symmetries of differential op- erator. 1

Klasifikační metody analýzy vrstvy nervových vláken na sítnici / A Classification Methods for Retinal Nerve Fibre Layer Analysis

Zapletal, Petr January 2010 (has links)
This thesis is deal with classification for retinal nerve fibre layer. Texture features from six texture analysis methods are used for classification. All methods calculate feature vector from inputs images. This feature vector is characterized for every cluster (class). Classification is realized by three supervised learning algorithms and one unsupervised learning algorithm. The first testing algorithm is called Ho-Kashyap. The next is Bayess classifier NDDF (Normal Density Discriminant Function). The third is the Nearest Neighbor algorithm k-NN and the last tested classifier is algorithm K-means, which belongs to clustering. For better compactness of this thesis, three methods for selection of training patterns in supervised learning algorithms are implemented. The methods are based on Repeated Random Subsampling Cross Validation, K-Fold Cross Validation and Leave One Out Cross Validation algorithms. All algorithms are quantitatively compared in the sense of classication error evaluation.

A strategic decision-making model for optimal alignment of 3PL providers with SASOLs outbound supply chain

Rabie, Dewaldt Johannes January 2018 (has links)
Abstract in English, Afrikaans and Sesotho / The study was inspired by the global phenomenon of failure rates of outsourcing ventures; yet, the outsourcing value proposition of 3PL providers is promising and potentially lucrative. The approach of the outsourcing venture was thus investigated, specifically how to align and integrate outsourcing parameters appropriately at the inception of the outsourcing venture in order to attain the benefits brought about by the outsourcing decision over the projected life of the outsourcing venture. To this effect, a strategic decision-making model, with the objective of ascertaining optimal alignment and integration was developed. The model comprises a dualistic development followed by a methodological process path to operationalise the strategic decision-making model. A services continuum (development one) is established, which is a permutation matrix that classifies four aspects of importance (service type, category of 3PL provider, strategic alignment and investment), in order to align the aspects optimally and enable appropriate model application. The services continuum is a conglomeration of nine models:  a capabilities matrix for 3PL provider services;  a framework for evaluating the supply chain role of 3PL providers;  a mathematical model;  a supplier selection and evaluation process;  a presentation of the Hayes–Wheelwright framework;  an outsourcing variables differentiated model;  four categories of the 3PL providers model;  an estimated path model; and  a process integration via survey data collection model. The services continuum was extended for utilisation with risk management practices, and an outsourcing risk matrix (development two) was established. The enablement of the outsource risk matrix is an element review, consisting of three categories: collaboration and integrated planning systems; performance measurement; and broad-based black economic empowerment. The strategic decision-making methodology process path was developed as having three phases, which operationalise the strategic decision-making model. The research was primarily focussed on literature reviews, with the models classified according to the services continuum. To a lesser extent, the research focussed on primary data, which served as model application input specifically for application requirements related to Sasol. The study established a universally applicable strategic decision-making model, as well as the application of the model for Sasol’s outbound (final packaged product) supply chain. A Study on the Existence of a Low Idiosyncratic Volatility Premium on the Cross-section of Share Returns on the JSE

Nogueira, Miguel 11 August 2021 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Sesotho / As one of the renowned anomalies in modern investment theory, the low idiosyncratic volatility anomaly may be the most bewildering and captivating of them all. The anomaly defies the traditional asset pricing theories of modern portfolio theory, which state the fundamental principle that high-risk portfolios are compensated for with higher expected returns. This study determined if the low idiosyncratic volatility premium is present on the cross-section of share returns of the JSE. 12-, 36- and 60-month volatility estimation periods were used in this study to determine if this has any significant effect on share returns. A relevant 26-year sample period from January 1994 to December 2019 was employed. In examining the CAPM OLS regression results utilising the 60-month idiosyncratic volatility estimation period, statistically significant evidence was found to support the alternative hypothesis of a low idiosyncratic volatility anomaly on the cross-sectional returns on the JSE. These findings are supported by a statistically significant alpha for five of the six portfolios examined and clearly indicate the superior performance of the low volatility portfolio in contrast to the high idiosyncratic volatility portfolios. These findings of the 60-month CAPM regression analysis provide clear evidence of a low idiosyncratic volatility anomaly and reject the null hypothesis that there is no statistically significant evidence in favour of a low idiosyncratic volatility anomaly on the cross-section of share returns on the JSE after estimating volatility utilising a 60-month volatility estimation period. QoS v systému UMTS / QoS in UMTS

Kavan, Radovan January 2009 (has links)
This thesis treats of QoS (Quality of Service) in UMTS system. The term quality of service is frequently used, recently, however not only in computer networks, but also more and more in mobile networks also. Present system of 2nd generation (2G) GSM enables only limited exploitation of QoS function. System UMTS is a system of 3rd generation (3G) already and contains quality of service in greater measure which is ensured with number of algorithms and functions. Individual QoS functions enable effective utilization of radio interface, support maintenance of planned coverage and offer high spectral efficiency. Functions that cater to quality of service are called RRM functions (Radio Resource Management). There exist five basic functions in UMTS system that are Admission control (AC), Power control (PC), Load control (LC), Handover control (HC) and Packet scheduler (PS). These functions are responsible for control of network access, control of power, control of network load, control of handover and packet (bit rate) scheduling. Last three functions are usually collectively designated as Congestion control, control of network overload. UMTS layer model, differentiation of services, traffic classes and 3GPP concept are also discussed. In thesis the attention is piad to Admission control algorithm – control of network access – in the uplink direction and to different ways of load (in the cell) modeling. Individual approaches are simulated in MATLAB. A possibility of using algorithm in the real system is discussed in conclusion.

“It was the doing of the ‘6-Sky’ lord” : an investigation of the origins and meaning of the three stones of creation in ancient Mesoamerica

Schaefer, David Matthew 17 February 2012 (has links)
The following work presents a hypothesis which identifies the origins and meaning of an ancient Mesoamerican concept known as the three stones of creation. Previous interpretations have tended to apply astronomical, spatial, or geographical models, while many conclusions have been made on the basis of one Classic Maya monument, Stela C of Quirigua. This thesis builds an argument for the temporal nature of these “stones,” used to metaphorically represent a sequence of separate units of time, referred to as eras, ages, or creations. A primary goal is to demonstrate that Quirigua Stela C provides in brief, summary form a chronology which is better defined through inscriptions in the Cross Group at Palenque, and in a sequence of panels at Yaxchilan containing beliefs about the origins of the ballgame. In constructing an argument for the temporal nature of the three stones of creation, every available context from a set of hieroglyphs mentioned in the Quirigua Stela C “creation” text—including Na Ho Chan (“First 5-Sky”) and “6-Sky”—is discussed in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3, these glyphs are shown to aid in the organization of the deeper past within the Palenque and Yaxchilan mythologies. When compared chronologically and thematically, these sites seem to point to the 24th century B.C.E. as the important termination of a time period (i.e., the planting of a creation stone) related to a mythic complex involving the death and underworld journey of the Maize Lord, followed by his resurrection, emergence, and/or accession to power. Key questions addressed include the antiquity of these beliefs and where the metaphors used to arrange time observed among the Classic Maya originate. In Chapter 4, earlier expressions of this time ideology are interpreted through iconographic conventions, ritual deposits, and monumental architecture at the Olmec site of La Venta. Similarly, Chapter 5 proposes that the Humboldt Celt, the earliest known example of the three stones of creation, arranges units of time into a sequence. These and other interpretations suggest the existence of an ancestral, Mesoamerican era-based time model to which later Postclassic, colonial, and contemporary beliefs, such as those expressed in the K’iche’-Mayan Popol Vuh, are fundamentally related. / text

Monstrous Dialogues: THE HOST and South Korean Inverted Exile

Turner, James Lloyd 01 January 2012 (has links)
Bong Joon-ho‟s monster movie blockbuster, The Host (Gweomul, 2006), is the most commercially successful film in South Korean cinema history. The film‟s popularity and significance derive from its unearthing of the ambivalence concerning South Korea‟s rapid transformation from a rural dictatorship to an urban democracy with one of the strongest economies on the planet. This ambivalence is buried beneath a veneer of "progress" blanketing contemporary South Korea and constitutes a condition I call inverted exile. The Host explicitly engages life in inverted exile through my notion of aesthetic dialogue. Aesthetic dialogue, takes influence from the work of Mikhail Bakhtin and allows for proliferation of meaning beyond authorial intent by focusing on The Host‟s context. My approach focuses on genre, narrative, and style to flesh out the political, historical, and social ambivalences behind any given moment of The Host to put them in dialogue with one another. The project progresses through sites of cultural dialogue central to the film and/or life in inverted exile: the monster, the city, the home. I approach each site through the genres associated with them and gender roles each of them assume in inverted exile. South Korea‟s transformation and its relationship with the United States are causes of anxiety (e.g. loss of traditional values, overwhelming Western influence) and desire (political freedom, economic opportunity). Ultimately, I argue, The Host suggests that South Korea and its citizens need to embrace the ambivalences of inverted exile and actively shape an identity that takes an active and critical attitude towards Western influence. Such an attitude can better preserve the desirable aspects of traditional culture (e.g. traditional food, familial unity) and alleviate the anxieties caused by Western influence (e.g. rampant consumerism, unjust class divisions). The Host‟s dialogic form is integral to its shaping of Korean identity as it takes from multiple cultural sources (i.e. Hollywood and Korean history) without challenging their polarization.
