A study of language development among children with hearing disabilities in pre-school

Fröberg, Linn, Ravn-Holm, Josefin January 2013 (has links)

The strategising of middle managers through sensemaking and sensegiving: a case study of a financial services provider in South Africa

Xaba, Lungile Maureen 12 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Zulu and Southern Sotho / Middle managers are tasked with supporting new initiatives and change, while at the same time experiencing challenges in making sense of the strategic initiative and giving sense to other members of the organisation. This dissonance experienced by middle managers tasked with change informed the topic of the research. The current study explores the strategising of middle managers through sensemaking and sensegiving during a strategic initiative in a single case study within a financial services provider in South Africa. The study seeks to examine the phenomenon through the theoretical lenses of the strategy-as-practice perspective, middle manager perspective and the theory of sensemaking and sensegiving. The study adopted a qualitative-exploratory design which involved collecting data through semi-structured in-depth individual faceto-face interviews. Data was analysed through coding, using thematic analysis and the categorisation and interpretation of common themes. Three main themes emerged from the study which were categorised as middle manager dissonance, middle manager sensemaking and sensegiving actions and middle manager practices in sensemaking and sensegiving. These themes offer insight into middle manager strategising, sensemaking and sensegiving during a new strategic initiative. The study concludes that when the organisation introduced a new strategic initiative middle managers’ knowledge was disturbed. These middle managers experienced various emotions as they were trying to make sense of the changes while giving sense to other members of the organisation. Findings confirmed delays in implementation due to lack of understanding of the change by middle managers. The study also concludes that although middle managers experienced challenges initially, they moved into a task of “selling” the new initiative through sensemaking and sensegiving. Middle managers got involved in various practices such as team discussions and information sharing sessions as they make sense and give sense to other team members. Through this interaction, middle managers aligned others and created common understanding while they influence them through sensegiving. Findings of the current study may offer valuable knowledge to organisations in the financial sector and practitioners tasked with v new strategic initiatives. The study also responds to calls for more research using the strategy-as-practice perspective and the theory of sensemaking and sensegiving. / Abaphathi abasesigabeni esiphakathi banikezwe umsebenzi wokuxhasa imizamo emisha kanye nezinguquko, kanti ngesikhathi esisodwa bahlangabezana nezinselele ekwenzeni imizamo yamasu ukuthi izwakale kwamanye amalungu enhlangano. Role of microRNAs in non-small cell lung carcinoma : effect of heme oxygenase-1 / Rôle des microARNs dans le carcinome pulmonaire non à petites cellules : effet de l’hème oxygénase-1

Skrzypek, Klaudia 08 January 2013 (has links)
Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), an antioxidant enzyme can prevent tumor initiation while it has been demonstrated to promote various tumors progression and angiogenesis. Here it was investigated whether HO-1 can modulate microRNAs and regulate human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) development. Stable HO-1 overexpression in NSCLC NCI-H292 cells enhanced global production of miRNAs and significantly diminished expression of oncomirs and angiomirs, whereas upregulated tumor suppressive miRNAs. The most potently downregulated was miR-378. HO-1 overexpressing cells displayed also upregulated p53, downregulated Ang-1 and MUC5AC, reduced proliferation, migration and diminished angiogenic potential. CO was a mediator of HO-1 effects on tumor cells proliferation, migration and miR-378 expression. In contrast, stable miR-378 overexpression decreased HO-1 and p53 while enhanced expression of MUC5AC, VEGF, IL-8 and Ang-1 and consequently increased proliferation, migration and stimulation of endothelial cells. Adenoviral delivery of HO-1 to miR-378 overexpressing cells reversed miR-378 effect on proliferation and migration of cancer cells. In vivo, HO-1 overexpressing tumors were smaller, less vascularized and oxygenated and less metastatic, whereas miR-378 overexpression exerted the opposite effects. Accordingly, in patients with NSCLC, HO-1 expression was lower in metastases to lymph nodes than in primary tumors while miR-378 did not differ significantly. To conclude, in vitro and in vivo data indicate that interplay between HO-1 and miR-378 significantly modulates NSCLC progression and angiogenesis.

The universe of Samuel Beckett\'s late prose

Gonçalves, Lívia Bueloni 02 October 2014 (has links)
This dissertation presents a reading of Samuel Beckett´s so-called second trilogy in prose comprising the works Company (1980), Ill Seen Ill Said (1981), and Worstward Ho (1983), with special focus on Company. These texts belong to the authors late prose, characterized by a mixture of genres and the intense questioning of both language and literary representation. While highlighting the specificities of this period, we argue that among all the experiments of the Beckettian narrator there is a mechanism that seeks for company within the very narrative a theme present in many of Becketts works, which is further stressed by the publication of Company. The need for company through the act of narrative, however, unfolds in an ambiguous and conflicted manner.
