Holistic Health Factors in the Workplace: Biophilia, Ergonomics and ExerciseJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT In an attempt to advocate body-conscious design and healing work environments, this research study of holistic health in the workplace explores cognitive, social and physical well-being in four small US offices that are between 1000 and 4000 square feet and employ three to twelve employees. Holistic health, as pursued in this research, includes social health, emotional health and physical health. These three factors of holistic health have been identified and investigated in this study: biophilia: peoples' love and affiliation with other species and the natural environment; ergonomics: the relationship between the human body, movement, the immediate environment and productivity; and exercise: exertion of the body to obtain physical fitness. This research study proposes that employees and employers of these four participating workplaces desire mobility and resources in the workplace that support holistic health practices involving biophilia, ergonomics, and exercise. Literature review of holistic health and the holistic health factors of this research topic support the idea that interaction with other species can be healing, ergonomic body-conscious furniture and equipment increase productivity, limit body aches, pains and health costs; and exercise stimulates the mind and body, increasing productivity. This study has been conducted primarily with qualitative and flexible research approaches using observation, survey, interview and pedometer readings as methods for data collection. Two small corporate franchise financial institutions and two small private healthcare providers from both Arizona and Georgia participated in this study. Each office volunteered one employer and two employee participants. Of the holistic health factors considered in these four case studies, this study found that a majority of participants equally valued emotional health, social health and physical health. A majority of participants declared a preference for workplace environments with serene natural environments with outdoor spaces and interaction with other species, work environments with body-conscious furniture, equipment and workstations, as well as exercise space and equipment. As these particular workplace environments affirmed value for elements of the factors biophilia, ergonomics and exercise, all three factors are considered valueable within the workplaces of these case studies. Furthermore, factors that were said to contribute to personal productivity in participating workplaces were found as well as sacrifices that participants stated they would be willing to make in order to implement their preferred work environment(s). In addition, this study recorded and calculated average miles walked by participants in each workplace as well as existing incentives and descriptions of ideal work environments. Implications of this research study involve interior design, industrial design and fashion design that can accommodate the desires of the four participating workplaces. Major design implications involve accommodating these particular workplaces to provide personnel with opportunities for holistic health in working environments. More specific implications of office related design involve providing access to natural environments, body-conscious equipment and spaces, as well as opportunities for exercise and social interaction. These elements of the factors biophilia, ergonomics and exercise were found to be said to contribute to cognitive, social and physical health. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S.D. Design 2011

A Framework for Holistic Ideation in Conceptual Design Based On Experiential MethodsJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: The main objective of this project was to create a framework for holistic ideation and research about the technical issues involved in creating a holistic approach. Towards that goal, we explored different components of ideation (both logical and intuitive), characterized ideation states, and found new ideation blocks with strategies used to overcome them. One of the major contributions of this research is the method by which easy traversal between different ideation methods with different components were facilitated, to support both creativity and functional quality. Another important part of the framework is the sensing of ideation states (blocks/ unfettered ideation) and investigation of matching ideation strategies most likely to facilitate progress. Some of the ideation methods embedded in the initial holistic test bed are Physical effects catalog, working principles catalog, TRIZ, Bio-TRIZ and Artifacts catalog. Repositories were created for each of those. This framework will also be used as a research tool to collect large amount of data from designers about their choice of ideation strategies used, and their effectiveness. Effective documentation of design ideation paths is also facilitated using this holistic approach. A computer tool facilitating holistic ideation was developed. Case studies were run on different designers to document their ideation states and their choice of ideation strategies to come up with a good solution to solve the same design problem. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S.
This research aimed at to investigate the process of inserting music as a curriculum subject in a full-time public school. More specifically, it aimed at: to examine the conceptions of the school community’s members about the practices of school music education; to identify the different musical and musical educational practices developed in/by the school; to understand the contributions of music teaching to the development of an integrated curriculum; and to understand the relationships between music teaching and the school project of holistic education. A qualitative case study with a public state school of the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil was carried out. This school is one of schools that are part of the Integrated Public School Project (EPI), in Santa Catarina. Data were collected through observation, semistructured interviews and analysis of written documents. Data analysis was developed by means of establishing a set of categories related to the insertion of music subject in the school curriculum, focusing the occupation of the school “space” and the constitution the “place” of music at school, as well as the schooling process of music. The theoretical framework was constituted by the concept of “school times” elaborated by Gimeno Sacristán (2008), as well as by concepts of full-time education, holistic education and integrated curriculum. Results show that, by analyzing the process of inserting music as a curriculum subject from the perspective of the “school times”, it was possible to understand how happened the confirmation of music in the curriculum of the school, contributing to the conquest of the rightful place of music as a school subject.

Thinking Holistically versus Analytically: Exploring the Impact of Culture on Consumers' Cognitive Responses to AdsFeng, Yang 01 May 2014 (has links)
Along with China's economic growth and opening to the outside world, Chinese young people (mainly the post-80s and the post-90s) are affected by the commercialized culture. When targeting young consumers across cultures, many international advertisers prefer to use standardized visual advertisements. However, culture plays a key role in international advertising as the interpretation of advertising messages varies across cultures. Based on the framework of Analytic/Holistic Thought and Hybridity Theory, this study argued that Chinese and American young consumers adopt different thought patterns to process advertising messages. Looking at two important factors in advertising---image type and product type, this study advocated that marketers need to match the image type with their advertised products or brands, and to adopt congruous images that fit into young Chinese and American consumers' thought patterns. Past research on cultural studies and sociology has contributed to our understanding of how culture shapes the construction and deconstruction of advertising messages, and of the importance of image type used in advertising. In addition, marketing research helps us understand global consumer behaviors, the relationship between consumers' interpretations of ad messages and their attitudinal responses, and the importance of product type. Further, studies from cognitive psychology have provided useful framework for us to analyze the nature of human advertising behaviors and responses. Given the literature, this study sought to understand how culture influences consumers' interpretations of ad messages and how the interpretations further influence their evaluations of the ad and product, and their purchase intentions. This study employed a quantitative experimental design that included qualitative open-ended questions. The experiment tested the effect of culture on generating product/brand thoughts, examined the interaction effect of image type and product type on young consumers' attitudes and purchase intentions, and explored the relationship between the number of generated product/brand thoughts and ad effectiveness. The qualitative questions sought to explore how consumers across cultures recalled different types of objects from the ads and generated different types of product/brand thoughts. In conclusion, the study noted the following two key points: First, Chinese young consumers are less analytic than their American counterparts and tend to be more likely influenced by ad setting while recalling people portrayed in ads. Therefore, advertisers targeting young Chinese consumers may consider using a lifestyle format ad and focusing on portraying the attributes of focal people and objects as well as adding more visual pieces of context information. In contrast, advertising targeting American young consumers can adopt a personalized format, and focus on portraying the attributes of focal people and objects and on linking the attributes of focal people/objects to the product. Second, there is an interactive effect between product type and image type on ad effectiveness. For functional product advertising, using implicit images can be a creative strategy, especially for young Chinese consumers, as they may still infer the performance-related attributes (utilitarian attributes) of the products from background information. However, for symbolic product advertising, it is found that using implicit images discourages both Chinese and American participants from generating product/brand thoughts and from endowing the product with a typical product-user image from the ad.

The development and use of the bedwetting alarm for nocturnal enuresisTepper, Ute Hedwig 12 1900 (has links)
Since 1904 bedwetting alarms have been developed and scientifically
described for the treatment of nocturnal enuresis, also known as
bedwetting. Currently, several bedwetting alarms of various designs are
available on the overseas market. These can be imported to South
Africa at great cost. As affordable alarms were not readily available in
South Africa, there was a need to develop and evaluate a new unit.
In order to improve the efficacy of this new device, it was accompanied
by detailed user guidelines and instructions. The use of this alarm was
tested and the observations of thirteen bedwetting children recorded.
Additionally, a programme was developed to counsel enuretic children
with accompanying problems, and to assist the parents in dealing with
their child's bedwetting problem. The observations and findings will
be useful in practice and future research. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Educational Psychology - Specialisation in Guidance and Counselling)

Previous issue date: 2012 / The main target of our research is the program “Fortaleza em Paz" which calls for collective meditation. Thus, our work is the result of an educational experience with teenagers from school Joaquim Antonio Albano, which is a public professional and educational institution in Fortaleza - Ceará. Discussions were facilitated and as result of them, the perceptions of teachers and students about the “Fortaleza em Paz" program, in that institution, were collected. The choice of this theme is grounded in the belief that this practice can greatly change the attitude and thinking of young people and educators in the educational environment as well as their positions on the environment in which they live, urging them to a culture of peace. The present study has a qualitative nature and an ethnographic view. Literature search, interviews, observations and workshops on culture of peace were conducted with the study subjects. The workshops of culture of peace were used as the main methodological resource. The essential on the promotion of workshops for peace is the creation of discussion forums that enable the construction of summaries to know. This happens in group, reinforcing the idea of collective peace. From the expressions of the young, obtained by means of speeches, drawings, texts, it could be realized that they announce some "benefits" in relation to attend the event of meditation in the school, such as promoting the quality of life, welfare, health, and reduce levels of violence in the city. There was improvement in personal well-being, concentration in class, family relationship and the educational environment and better school performance. Besides the psychological and spiritual benefits obtained in the practice of daily meditation, we believe in the importance of announcing successful examples in terms of education for peace. It could be seen that the “Fortaleza em Paz" program can be used as a teaching strategy in favor of a holistic education. In this sense, the experience of the Culture of Peace workshops can in many ways, encourage reflection and development of persons involved in the meditation group at school about the impact of this experience in their lives. Then, it can be concluded that the technique of meditation brought positive consequences for the group studied. This is only one among many possibilities of work culture of peace. The path to an education that respects the scale of the human being and form, indeed, citizens can exercise their full potential, it is certainly a long journey. The exciting journey experimented in this research will hopefully be a step in that direction, toward building a Culture of Peace, which will also be consolidated mainly through education.

Kvalita života pacientů s revmatoidní artritidou / Quality of Life in Rheumatoid Arthritis PatientsKAAS, Jiří January 2017 (has links)
The objective of the presented thesis is to explore the impact of rheumatoid arthritis on the patient's life and to compare the subjectively perceived quality of life of such patients with that in healthy population. The set objectives were achieved through a combination of quantitative and qualitative research. The quantitative survey took place as part of the team research project GAJU No. 120/2012/S through the use of the standardized WHOQOL-100 questionnaire handed out to 200 patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. In addition to further tests, the statistical data analysis included comparison of the quality of life in the aforesaid patient population with the quality of life in the control healthy population, which also participated in the above stated project. The qualitative survey used the technique of semi-structured interviews with 11 patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. The research has shown that the patients with rheumatoid arthritis have a worse quality of life in the fields of physical condition and independence than healthy population. On the other hand, a better quality of life was found in the fields of milieu and spirituality. The results also referred to pain and fatigue as the major factors influencing the quality of life of such patients and drew attention to their interconnection with other dimensions. The qualitative survey supplemented the quantitative data with a practical detailed description of individual problems. Among other things, it detected factors that help the patients to overcome obstacles associated with the disease. For example, the research revealed the family influence or the compensation of restraints by adaptations of the environment or changes of the daily routine. Interesting conclusions have been derived from the information about the effect of adaptation to the disease; it was found out that in the course of their life with the disease, patients get used to certain difficulties, so they perceive them as less severe than in the beginnings of the disease. The thesis provides a complex view of the matters of the quality of life of patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and refers to this disease not only as to a disease of the body but also to a disease of the human soul. Among other things, it provides evidence that the concept of the quality of life is applicable in the field of nursing. With regard to the above stated facts, the thesis is useful for the extension of the theoretical knowledge in the field of nursing as well as for the clinical practice.
