Holistic Stress Management Training: A Burnout Strategy for Mental Health WorkersRay, Cathy Anne 08 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the effects of an individually administered versus a group-administered stress management training program on various measures of stress, job satisfaction, and burnout among mental health workers. A total of 36 subjects, who were employed in Texas community mental health facilities, participated in the study. The subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups: an experimental group (N = 12) which received training on an individual basis, an experimental group (N = 12) which received training in small groups of four to six subjects, and a control group (N = 12) which did not receive training. Both didactic and experimental modes were utilized during the six-week training program. All experimental subjects practiced relaxation daily and were exposed to a broad range of coping skills for stress management. This study investigated the effects of an individually administered versus a group-administered stress management training program on various measures of stress, job satisfaction, and burnout among mental health workers. Teacher Learning within Literacy Instruction: Reflective & Refractive Considerations on the Community, Interpersonal, and Individual PlanesJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: This qualitative study explores the learning experiences of two first-grade teachers in a progressive public elementary school in the southwestern U.S. Participants inquired into their literacy instruction practices within their reading-workshops. Weekly inquiry group conversations between teachers and researcher informed a perspective of learning as participation. During the semester-long study, two key questions guided design and implementation: 1) What is the nature of teachers' learning experiences related to their literacy instruction practices, contextualized within an inquiry group? 2) How do those learning experiences reflect and/or refract the community, interpersonal, and individual planes of analysis? An ethnographic perspective informed data collection and analysis; data were collected through weekly inquiry-group conversations, bi-weekly classroom observations, and in-depth interviews. A learning framework of community, interpersonal, and individual planes of analysis served as an analytic tool used in conjunction with a modified analytic induction. Teachers' case studies offer unique accounts of their learning, contextualized within their specific classrooms. Findings are discussed through narrative-based vignettes, which illustrate teachers' learning trajectories. On the community plane, apprenticeship relationships were evident in teachers' interactions with students' parents and with one another. Interpersonal interactions between teachers demonstrated patterns of participation wherein each tried to teach the other as they negotiated their professional identities. Analysis of the individual plane revealed that teachers' past experiences and personal identities contributed to ways of participation for both teachers that were highly personal and unique to each. Affective considerations in learning were a significant finding within this study, adding dimensionality to this particular sociocultural theory of learning. The ways teachers felt about themselves, their students, their community, and their work constituted a significant influence on what they said and did, as demonstrated on all three planes of analysis. Implications for practice include the significance of professional development efforts that begin at the site of teachers' questions, and attention to teachers' individual learning trajectories as a means to supporting educators to teach in more confident and connected ways. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Curriculum and Instruction 2011

The viability of graphology in psycho-educational assessmentCronje, Pierre Etienne 06 1900 (has links)
Handwriting as a unique expression of human behaviour has evoked continuous
interest as a means of analyzing and studying personality – a study known as
Graphology.
Research in graphology has shown diverse results, ranging from negative to
highly favourable. Many of the studies disregarding the value of graphology can
be criticized on the grounds of their research methodology as well as the method
used in handwriting analysis, namely the ‘trait-method’ whereby isolated
graphological features are simplistically linked to personality as opposed to a
more encompassing, holistic approach.
In the present study the special link between personality and graphology is
illustrated as well as the decisive influence the gestalt and form standard of a
writing have on the interpretation of that particular writing. The approach to the
graphological analyses was holistic, as it complements the complex uniqueness
of personality.
The study also focuses on the recommended methodology of handwriting
analysis, by offering a tailor-made personality ‘picture’ of the individual.
Graphological findings were compared to the clinical findings of the same
client/patient according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Diseases IV-TRTM (DSM-IV-TRTM).
Five (5) case studies have been reported in this qualitative research study. The
analyses of the writings were done by an independent graphologist. The
objective graphological findings show similarities with clinical findings of the
same clients/patients.
The holistic approach to handwriting analysis deems to have diagnostic value
and is promising in providing guidelines for psychotherapy. Graphology can thus
be regarded as a useful and viable tool in psycho-educational assessment. / Education / D.Ed. (Psychology of Education)

In search of a revised model of health : exploring the relationship between meaning and healthVan Wyk, Hanlie 06 1900 (has links)
Research in Logotherapy substantiates the influence of meaning on psychological
health and Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) corroborates the effects of psychological health
on physical health. This dissertation explores the relationship between meaning and
physical health hypothesising that purpose affects physical health.
Methodology
Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), ANOVAs and stepwise regression were used to
explore three possible models.
Results
EFA revealed four factors, purpose, fear, vitality and aggression. Significant
correlations were found between purpose, vitality (0.42) and work application (0.53).
Despite the significant relationship between purpose and vitality, the lack of Chi-square is
significant, suggesting that additional variables should be introduced into the model.
Conclusion
People reporting high levels of purpose together with low levels of fear and
aggression, can be characterised by high vitality and an absence of medical conditions.
Future research should focus on evaluating meaning centred interventions on immunity and
vitality. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Penalty of life imprisonment. Health Care for prisoners serving a life sentence.KOLÁŘOVÁ, Markéta January 2012 (has links)
In this diploma thesis I focus on health care for prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment. Health care in my view is based on a holistic vision of man, where I am interested in all components of an individual as a whole, and therefore I can not be satisfied with definition of health as absence of illness. So I do not mean only health care, but services that lead to optimal human development in all its human elements. These are services that take care of bio-psycho-socio-spiritual aspect of individual respectively prisoner. The aim of my qualitative research is to map the services related to a health care that are actually provided to prisoners serving a life sentence and then compare them with the services provided to prisoners serving prison sentence.

A AQUISIÇÃO DOS CONECTORES ESCRITOS EM LÍNGUA ESPANHOLA POR ACADÊMICOS DO CURSO DE LETRAS SEGUNDO A TEORIA HOLÍSTICA DA ATIVIDADE / THE ACQUISITION OF WRITTEN CONNECTORS IN THE SPANISH LANGUAGE BY STUDENTS OF A LANGUAGE UNDERGRADUATE COURSE ACCORDING TO THE HOLISTIC THEORY ACTIVITY.Cerezer, Andressa 09 December 2010 (has links)
This work aims to investigate acquisition of connectors and the conceptual acquisition of these categories in the writing of foreign language undergraduate students. The students of a Language Undergraduate Course with habilitation in Portuguese and Spanish and their respective literatures from a private college in the
central region of Rio Grande do Sul were submitted to a framework approach based on Holistic Theory Activity during the year of 2009 in which Process-Writing by White and Arndt (1991) was used. The activities with these students were organized in four sequential modules. In each module, a different textual genre was produced and then rewritten four times. For data analysis, Corpus Linguistics was used through computer tools in order to survey lexical-grammatical patterns in the corpus. In this study, the softwares used were WordSmith Tools, by Scott (1998), and the Semantic Mapper, by Richter (2009). The theoretical foundation was based on the following aspects: social interactionist theory by Vygotsky with emphasis on key concepts as mediation, internalization and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD); Activity Theory; Holistic
Theory Activity; Framework according to Holistic Theory Activity; Language acquisition and connectors acquisition. The results show that a consistent and strongly theoretically based framework approach as the Holistic Theory Activity allows the students to advance in the acquisition of connector as the involvement with the proposed methodology also advances. Therefore, it is believed that when the students experience a framework methodology in the undergraduate course they can gain useful experiences and concepts for their professional practice, since this knowledge will allow the future teachers to interfere in the ZPD of their students when necessary.

RETRATOS DA DOCÊNCIA EM TEXTOS DE REVISTA: EXPECTATIVAS, PAPEL SOCIAL E EMANCIPAÇÃO, UM ESTUDO COMPARATIVO ENTRE LETRAS E EDUCAÇÃO FÍSICA / PICTURES OF TEACHING IN MAGAZINE TEXTS: EXPECTATIONS, SOCIAL ROLE AND EMANCIPATION, A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF LANGUAGES AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROFESSIONAmaral, Joseane 24 February 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The study of social role involves the analysis the structures of expectations that surrounds it. Considering that social roles are clusters of expectations connected to the behavior of people in a certain society (Dahrendorf, 1969), it is important to know the level of the expectations - cognitive or normative (Luhmann, 1983). And how it is reflected in the society mentioned. This study aims to discover discursive evidences on the constitution's expectations that demarcate the social role of Languages professional, as opposed to Physical Education professional. Through corpora collected from magazines, we have started the analysis using Corpus Linguistics approach. The Corpus Linguistics works with computerized corpora, exposing linguistic evidence, questioning paradigms and showing new ways to the researcher (Berber Sardinha, 2004). For this purpose, we used two tools - the WordSmith Tools by Mike Scott, and the Semantic Mapper, by Richter and Berber-Sardinha. Our motivation for this study came from the knowledge that there is no specific legislation for accurate defining and delimitating the guidelines of Languages profession; the situation is reversed in the Physical Education profession, which is emancipated according to Brazilian Law nº 9696/98. Thus, we aim to discover how the social role can be "read" by analyzing texts from magazines, and how this discourse migrates and constitutes the respective social role. We study how the mass media exposes, and somehow imposes conduct and behavior patterns, as the "ready-made formulas" that teachers must follow as a basis. We adopt as the research parameters the Holistic Theory of Activity Extended, version 3.0, by Richter (2008, 2010b). This study is a pilot for the extended version of THA. We initiated the study of the Attribution Factors, a set of variables related to the notion of social roles, institutional spaces, functions, competencies, role models and group belonging. The results suggest the presence, in the analyzed corpora, of differentiation trades between; on the one hand the visibility of the emancipated professions, through the demonstration of recognition and the endogenous discourses; and on the other hand, the analysis shows the exogenous discourse, characteristic of the professions without a self institutional place.

Theorizing the State of Health Practices and Climate in Construction via Fourfold StructurationJanuary 2017 (has links)
abstract: Regulatory agencies, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), recognize that decisions regarding occupational health are often economically driven, with worker health only a secondary concern (Ruttenberg, 2014). To investigate the four National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) long-standing health concerns—welding fumes, crystalline silica, noise, and musculoskeletal disorders—a mixed methods research is conducted. Fourfold structuration, a holistic communication process with roots in indigenous/ancient knowledge, is used to organize data and facilitate making tangible relationships of health to productivity and profits that are abstract and often stated by industries, such as construction, as difficult to quantify. From both construction trade worker and occupational health and safety expert interviews data/codes are developed. For the qualitative method, the codes are organized into a constructivist grounded theory depicting the construction industry with regard to its foundation – profits. A theoretical exercise translating the qualitative codes into potential productivity losses is presented as a way for quantifying the abstract relationships of health to productivity. For the quantitative study, the data/codes are used to develop a comprehensive list of practices, barriers to, and catalysts for addressing health in construction. A significant quantitative finding is that occupational health and safety (OSH) experts are not traditionally involved at the highest levels of the OSHA Hierarchy of Controls, where the greatest opportunity to prevent exposure to health hazards is possible. Organized via a holistic framework, this research emphasizes our primary responsibility to each other as highlighted in recent NIOSH worker health agendas. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Engineering 2017

Previous issue date: 2016-03-30 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / Several problems of contemporary society are related with the economic, political and cultural systems besides worldview that throughout the history of humankind have become crises, sometimes unavoidable and other induced and even provided. Within this context is the environmental issues affecting the various forms of public health. In the 60 and 70 various problems related to the environmental impact by pollution and exploitation of natural resources have led many alternative culture movements in favor of the rescue of ethical and moral values that provide a healthier relationship with the natural environment. One of these movements is permaculture, called "permanent culture", permaculture is composed of a series of principles and foundations for the establishment of an ecological culture in order to provide sustainable human communities. In João Pessoa, in 2011 through a partnership between the Department of Health and Department of Environment the first training was held in permaculture opening 50 vacancies distributed among government officials, students and other interested parties, passing then to include permaculture Petal Health and Wellness in the care of public health through Integrative and Complementary Practices in Health (PIC). Concurrently with this process, the mobilization of therapists for the implementation of the National Policy Integrative and Complementary Practices in Health (PNPIC) resulted in the creation of service centers specialized in PICs, including the Balance of Being.Considered the biggest of the three experiences this center offer a variety of group and individual therapies such as tai chi, yoga, reflexology, massage therapy, art therapy, reiki, aromatherapy, acupuncture, auriculoacupuncture, biodance, community therapy and among others. A collective therapies offered by Cpics Balance of Being are the permaculture activities implemented through the initiative of the therapists of the Center and with the support of the General Coordination, these activities take place in an area that initially was planned to be used as parking lot in the inner space of Cpics Balance of Being. Therefore the central object of this study was ecological culture and specific objective was monitoring permaculture activities in Balance of Being seeking to understand the meaning and motivations of those involved in construction and development of Cpics - who attributed their actions when they decided to expropriate the initiative of innovative profile and assess to what extent the initiative and the Centers activities that promote the social capital of the agents involved in relation to health practices.
