Synaesthetic Design Expression: The Blending of the Senses and its Implications on Brand Expression

abstract: ABSTRACT This research investigates the synaesthetic responses consumers have to branded consumer product designs to aid the design development process. Through proper application of synaesthetic responses, companies can create holistic experiences and brand expressions that are loved and trusted by consumers and thus achieve brand loyalty. Capturing the hearts and minds of consumers through exceptional product experiences is one of the primary goals of any design agency, retailer or Consumer Packaged Good (CPG) company today. Thousands of new products launch every year and consumers are bombarded with advertising campaigns, package designs, POP displays, product offerings and new product forms. Breaking through the visual and verbal clutter by designing for the senses is one of the key ways design firms and companies can engage with and create a stronger bond with the consumer. Connecting with consumers can be achieved through the maintenance of a compelling brand positioning and the development of brand expressions (products) that are holistically honest and express their positioning. Holistically honest designs are designs that capture the senses and the essence of the brand. Upon initial impression, the package immediately and innately “feels” right – nothing seems amiss. This includes all of the senses: sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing combined with what the consumer knows or believes about the brand to create a meaningful gestalt. All design touchpoints should be considered in order to attain the ultimate goal of a holistic design: graphic treatment, typography, words, scent, form, color – any type of sensory stimulator as these all influence perception and ultimately product and brand trust. Connecting Subject Matter, Social Life and Students' Experiences: A Case Study of Curriculum Integration Through Environmental Learning

Integrating environmental learning into mainstream education is an important countermeasure to address the challenges to the sustainability of the earth and children's integrated development. To be effectively integrated into mainstream education, an environmental learning program should be designed in ways that elicit the support of stakeholders, while at the same time without scarifying the environmental learning goals. The purpose of this study therefore is to explore an environmental learning model that meets the above mentioned goal using a case study design.Key principles for designing such environmental learning programs are identified first based on the theoretical framework. Then, the actual enactment of these principles in a practical setting and the effects on students in terms of environmental learning goals and traditional educational goals are explored through a case study of a pilot environmental learning program designed with these guiding principles. It presents a detailed portrait of the design process, the actual enacted curriculum, and the experiences of key stakeholders with this environmental learning program. It also evaluates this program's effects on students in environmental literacy (the environmental learning goal), academic achievement and social development (the traditional educational goals). The enactment of the guiding principles and factors that influence the enactment of this program are discussed thereafter. It concludes with the construction of the curriculum integration through environmental learning model based on the case study and a discussion of the model in light of the curriculum integration framework.

Circular Design and its applications in the Electric Guitar Industry : Development of a Circular Business Model System

Our society is all the more shifting towards focusing on the impact that we have on the world’s climate and reducing our environmental impact is getting increasingly popular. Amongst efforts to reduce the impact of the products that we use, the field of Circular Design has emerged as a solution that tackles the problem at its roots in a holistic way, aiming to not only reduce the climate impact of products, but to transition our entire society into a sustainable one through the implementation of a Circular Economy. This ideal economic state is structured around ensuring that products are not simply produced, used and then discarded, but instead that the value of products are never lost. This is done by circulating them in different stages, ensuring that they are reused by other people, refurbished to a good condition, remanufactured as a new product, or that their materials are recycled and used in other products. This holistic approach currently seems to be the most viable for transitioning our society into one structured around sustainability.   In the midst of the increasing interest in sustainability, companies are starting the move towards implementing changes with this in mind. In the electric guitar industry, .strandberg* stands out as one of the more well-known brands that is doing just that, by introducing product design changes to their electric guitars with the goal of reducing material waste and moving away from materials that are becoming scarce in the world. This can be seen as a first step towards changing the entire industry, that is currently focusing mostly on constantly manufacturing new products, to one that focuses on the value of existing products and how to maintain this for as long as possible. The electric guitar as a product is one that commonly sees several users during its lifetime already, and those with high degrees of quality and performance, such as .strandberg*’s products, can potentially be used and kept in a functional state indefinitely. As such, introducing Circular Design to this product category stands as a challenge.   During the course of this thesis project, the process of Design Thinking and the skillset of an Industrial Design Engineer has been used to take on this challenge of Circular Design applied to the electric guitar. Current circular products have been analyzed to find success factors, inspiration and knowledge of the implications that Circular Design has on product development. The work included a comprehensive literature review of the field to take part of the existing academic knowledge, contextual and user research to understand the current situation as well as the needs of the relevant user group, idea generation to find innovative solutions, visual prototyping of concepts and the use of evaluative methods to understand how well the solutions would work.   The final results of the project ended up being more theoretical than anticipated, as it was found that .strandberg*’s products in their design already fit many of the criteria for circular products. Instead, a circular business model system (CBMS) was developed, that details a process wherein .strandberg*’s newly produced as well as existing products can circulate through a sequence of users, while also incentivizing these users to take care of their products and ensure that their functional service life is maximized. The CBMS stands as a broader value offering to both .strandberg* as a company and to the users of their products.   Recommendations for future work with the CBMS includes testing alternative material choices with physical prototypes, launching the model at a small scale to investigate its validity and work out eventual problems as well as to build partnerships with actors, either on a small but potentially on a global scale, to be able to implement aspects of the CBMS.

This thesis describes a practice-based research project that explores the relationship between textile and fashion systems through whole-garment weaving. In the current state of the textile and fashion industry, these are mostly based on two separate systems where the textile industry merely functions as an invisible backbone of the fashion industry. The structure of the weave, the jacquard patterns, the yarns and colours have the ability to link the textile to the garment, materialising the interdependency of the two. Hybrid forms of dressing is based on a series of experiments related to the components of jacquard weaving, local yarns and weaving constructions in a layering system, to gain an understanding of their relationship in the process of garment creation. This project aims to contribute to creating an equal balance between textile and fashion systems, working in a simultaneous design approach and opening up for discussion on this matter.

Responding Objects – Poetic Design and Healing Spaces

Today's social climate and working environments expose us to excessive expectations and demands and more and more people are diagnosed with stress-related illnesses. My degree project is an investigation of poetic design, healing spaces and fatigue syndrome and the importance of adapted health care environments that strengthen treatment and recovery. My mother has fatigue syndrome, she has been ill for over six years, and she still has severe symptoms that probably never fully will go way. So, the purpose of this project is, on the one hand an attempt to get a deeper understanding of her situation, and on the other, to shed some light on this illness that is getting more and more common, especially amongst women. Research shows that spending time in nature has healing effects for those with mental illness. Using my definition of poetic design as a method, I have transposed qualities of nature into an indoor environment that reconnects to humans deep and genetic relationship to nature. I am proposing a new type of health care space with a much-needed holistic approach. Focus is on treatments such as mindfulness, basal body awareness and yin yoga as well as different kinds of therapy and activities in a space close to nature. A holistic space including a garden, an indoor space and a piece of furniture that are designed to respond to the non-measurable and invisible symptoms of fatigue syndrome.

Web accessibility guidelines have textual representation and provide little support in systematic analysis and usage. The study hypothesizes that the guidelines can be reorganized and represented using the goal oriented technique and design patterns which will allow their usage in a more systematic manner and accommodate detailed analysis of the guidelines with other competing goals. For this study, knowledge from web designers’ experiences in using the guidelines, researchers’ findings, and the actual guidelines have been amalgamated. Six web designers have been consulted on a one-on-one basis and difficulties in using the guidelines for (1) specific scenarios, (2) systematic application, and (3) detailed systems analysis have been reported. Goal oriented modeling and design patterns have been introduced for (1) graphical representation of the guidelines using goal graphs, and (2) keeping the technical details separate from the goal graphs. The proposed representation allows for the accessibility guidelines to be systematically applied into interface design, and systems design using the goal oriented modeling technique.

How can reimagining the way we light our cities prove to be the urban catalyst to meet targets set out in the Paris Climate Agreement? In this Master Thesis, I question how restructuring our urban lighting can provide enormous benefits for not only reducing our energy consumption and becoming more efficient societies, but also support social interaction in shaping our cities for the future. The aspects pertaining to urban lighting and its influence on our environment have been organised into economy, political and urban evolution (social) categories, as a way to dissect and appreciate lights associated role in shaping our societies. Seeking sustainable strategies to meet urgent energy targets and urban development initiatives, are no longer optional but necessary. However, even with this undisputed need for change, particularly within urban lighting, approaches taken are still very much sequestered from general understanding and lack cross-disciplinary cooperation. Extensive publications, works and teachings from lighting designers, as well as currently adopted policies from government bodies and international case studies have been considered, in order to understand current strategies adopted and their potential co-operation for a future holistic strategy in tackling climate change as well as apparent inequalities in our urban environments.

Im bisherigen Auslegungsprozess wird ein Bahnsystem in der Regel in Teilsysteme zerlegt, die nacheinander und für sich betrachtet entworfen werden. Das Verhalten des Gesamtsystems im geplanten täglichen Betrieb wird nur für wenige Varianten mittels Simulation überprüft. In dieser Arbeit wird der Ansatz vorgestellt, ein elektrisches Bahnsystem als Optimierungsaufgabe zu modellieren und diese mit einem geeigneten mathematischen Suchverfahren zu lösen, um Wechselwirkungen im Gesamtsystem bereits während der Dimensionierung berücksichtigen zu können. Zu diesem Zweck wird ein mehrkriterieller genetischer Algorithmus mit Zugfahrtsimulation und Netzberechnung gekoppelt, um ein für elektrische Bahnen entwickeltes Optimierungsmodell zu lösen. Am Beispiel einer realen Metrostrecke wird das Verfahren auf seine Eignung getestet und die erzielten Ergebnisse bewertet. / In the previous design process the electric railway system was subdivided into subsystems that are conceived one after the other and independent of each other. The performance of the complete railway system under realistic operation conditions can only be verified for some very few variants using simulation tools. The paper presents an approach to formulate an electric railway system as a self-contained optimization problem solved by means of a mathematical optimization method in order to consider interactions within the system in the early stage of the design process. Therefore a multi-objective genetic algorithm is coupled with both train simulation and electrical network calculation solving an optimization model specially designed for electrical railway systems. The proposed method is tested on an actual metro system. The results of this case study are presented and evaluated.
