The reception and transformation of homeopathy in Japan

Nonami, Hiroko Yuri January 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines from a medical anthropological viewpoint how the practice of the newly imported complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been transplanted, received and transformed in Japan. More specifically, I focus on homeopathy, which was introduced into Japan in the late 1990s. To address the research question, I focus on the practice of homeopathy from the anthropological viewpoint. The adoption of any new form of medicine is influenced by the prevailing medical, social and cultural context. So, how and why was homeopathy introduced into Japan the late 1990s? I explore this question by focusing on three aspects of the reception of homeopathy in Japan: (1) the institutionalisation of the homeopathy, including the formation of associations of practitioners and homeopathic colleges; (2) the translation of the theory and practice of homeopathy by the practitioners into a culturally acceptable form; (3) the utilisation and consumption of homeopathy by the patients, their families and self-prescribers. Over eighteen months of fieldwork in Japan led me to focus on these three elements of homeopathic practice. Regarding the theoretical framework, this mainly explores medical pluralism and the health care system in Japan from an anthropological perspective, and the globalisation and transmission of medicine. I argue that the success of homeopathy in Japan was largely thanks to the transmission strategies set by the founders of the colleges for lay homeopaths. Mothers in particular, concerned by worries over family health care, were drawn by this approach. Furthermore I also argue that this group not only be' self-help groups, creating thereby a strong tie with the lay homeopaths. I argue that mothers gained a sense of the empowerment through homeopathy. Within the Japanese health care system it was the popular sector that received and developed homeopathy.

A double-blind placebo controlled homoeopathic proving of Malus domestica 30CH, with a subsequent comparison of proving symptomatology to homoeopathic remedies of repertorial similarity

Moonsamy, Brenton Ricardo January 2015 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Technology: Homoeopathy, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2015. / Introduction The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of Malus domestica 30CH on a group of healthy provers and to compare these signs and symptoms to remedies of repertorial similarity. Malus domestica (common domestic apple) is an indigenous South African fruit which grows on the Drakensberg Mountains in Northern KwaZulu-Natal and is a regular part of the diet for those living there. This study hypothesized that Malus domestica 30CH would prove observable signs and symptoms in healthy individuals. Further it was hypothesized that the comparison of Malus domestica to remedies of reportorial similarity would highlight similarities and differences between existing homoeopathic remedies and Malus domestica 30CH thereby clarifying the therapeutic action of this new remedy and its relative location in the materia medica. The study was conducted by two researchers who each managed 15 provers and shared all primary data. The second researcher hypothesized that there would be a similarity between the proving symptoms of the remedy and the Doctrine of Signatures of the original substance (Ramnarayan 2014). Methodology A double blind placebo controlled proving of Malus domestica 30CH was conducted on 30 healthy volunteers who met specific inclusion criteria, with 6 receiving placebo and 24 receiving verum. A case history and thorough physical examination was performed on every prover before commencement of the proving. Recording of the data collected was in the form of a journal. Once the proving was completed information from each prover was collated and assessed by the two researchers. The symptoms elicited were then translated into materia medica and repertory language and a complete homoeopathic picture of the remedy appeared. Information from case histories and physical examinations were also considered. A repertorisation of 10 rubrics chosen to represent the essence of Malus domestica was conducted using Radar Opus software. Exclusion repertorization then followed in order to identify those remedies producing the highest numerical value and total number of rubrics within the animal, mineral and plant kingdoms in particular. Results Vast arrays of symptoms were experienced by the provers. Polarities in the symptoms were often displayed. On the emotional plane, there were symptoms of depression, sadness and cheerfulness. Some provers experienced tranquility and others felt anger, frustration and irritation. On the mental plane there were symptoms of clarity, focused concentration and confusion. The presence of delusions was marked. The most prominent delusion which infiltrated the mental and physical plane was of disconnection and separation. The main symptoms were sensations as if the extremities were separated from other areas. There was cramping and itching of the extremities as well. Pulsating headaches with perspiration of the scalp and eye pain were experienced. Various gastrointestinal symptoms were experienced ranging from distention, eructations, cramping, and diarrhea to hemorrhage after stool. Constriction of the chest and a loose, dry cough was also experienced. Cervical and lumbar back pain was reported. Sleep was described as unrefreshing with sleeplessness. The themes that emerged from the dreams were of danger (including danger to family), banquets, parties and helping others. The provers had a craving for tea. The similar remedies that emerged from the repertorial analysis were; Natrum muriaticum, Rhus toxicodendron, Lyssin, Cinchona officinalis and Pulsatilla pratensis. Conclusion The proving of Malus domestica 30CH did produce well defined symptoms that were clearly observed in healthy provers as proposed by the hypothesis. As hypothesized the comparison of Malus domestica to remedies of repertorial similarity did highlight similarities and differences between existing homoeopathic remedies and Malus domestica 30CH thereby clarifying the therapeutic range of this new remedy and its relative location in the materia medica. / M

Vliv homeopatického léčení na zdraví člověka / Homeopathic cure impact on human health

PECHOVÁ, Nikola January 2018 (has links)
The focus of this Diploma Thesis is to discover the awareness of homeopathy. Previous experience of responders with this type of treatment. If they don't mistake homeopathy for other type of alternative medicine and whether their experience has been positive, neutral or even negative. Another important goal is to examine the consequences of homeopathic treatment from the particular homeopath or a qualified expert. The difference between the treatment and diagnosis of the certain homeopaths. And also, the course of the visit. Primarily, the effect of homeopathic preparations on the health of the individual. A combination of quantitative and qualitative research was chosen to process these goals. The quantitative research is evaluated using an anonymous poll in electronic form. The qualitative research is processed using a semi-structured interview. The goal of the theoretical part is a mere view of the issue. It contains chapters that outline the basics of homeopathy, its use, homeopathic preparations, their production and the limits of homeopathic treatment. The Diploma Thesis contains an objective view of homeopathic treatment and assessment of its influence on the health of the individual.

Výskyt endoparazitů u koní a možnosti prevence

ŠEJBOVÁ, Tereza January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the diploma thesis is the analysis of the occurrence of endoparasites in horses and proposing prevention options using unconvential products and pasture management. In total 20 horses were included in the observation, who were all stabled on one farm. The observation took place during on pasture season. The first faecal examination was carried out for purpose of quantitative determination of parasites using the modified McMaster technique. The faecal analysis was carried out always before and after use of the homeopatihc and allopathic preparation. Horses were found to be infected by strongylides. Coprological analysis proved resistence to pyrantel embonate in 25 % of horses. After subsequent homeopathic treatment, the efficacy of this preparation was found in several horses, with EPG (eggs per gram) not exceeding 200. The effect of season on the rate of infection was monitored, when the effect of season wasn´t statiscially confirmed (p = 0,28). In assessing the effect of age on the intensity of infection, it was confirmed that older horses had lower parasitic infection rates than the young horses. After administration of active substance ivermectin to both groups of horses, a significant difference was observed when using this active substance against pyrantel embonate, which showed an excellent effect in 95 % horses. The homeopatic preparation of PVB etat vermieux can be used as an aditional preventive treatment during the year in horses that are sensitive to it. At the same time, it is important to regularly perform coprological faecal analysis and suitably choose an allopathic remedy, it is important to focus on preventive measures in horse breeding and pasture.

An exploratory study of the use of complementary and alternative medicine for osteoarthritis

Majumdar, Anne J. January 2009 (has links)
Background & Aim: Osteoarthritis (OA) sufferers frequently turn to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), of which the most common are acupuncture and homeopathy, to improve manageability of their condition. However, there is little extant evidence of effectiveness for these treatments for OA, particularly for homeopathy. One criticism of homeopathic studies is that treatment protocols do not reflect true homeopathy. The nature of true homeopathy is not documented in extant literature. In the current study a mixed methods approach was used to investigate the use of homeopathy for osteoarthritis using a survey, conducted with a parallel acupuncture survey for comparison, follow up interviews with homeopaths and a patient-centred study in a homeopathic department offering treatment on the NHS, in order to inform future studies. Method: The current study involved three phases; (1) A descriptive survey conducted on n=362 medical and non-medical homeopaths and acupuncturists, was used to , investigate practice of the therapies (2) Follow up interview of n=28 of the homeopathic practitioners. (3) A patient-centred study of n=11 patients with OA receiving homeopathy in the primary care setting. Results: (1) Most commonly encountered conditions were chronic diseases. Medical and non-medical acupuncturists practised very different forms of acupuncture particularly in terms of diagnostic techniques used and theoretical underpinning. Homeopathic practitioners used individualised treatments, abiding by classical homeopathy. Differences between medical and non-medical homeopaths included time spent in the consultation (p= 0.01), strength of confidence in homeopathy for asthma (p=0.01), musculo-skeletal (p=0.046) and acute conditions (p=0.01)., and confidence in conventional medicine (p=0.01). There was a belief amongst acupuncturists and homeopaths that the treatments may work on electrodynamic fields in the body. (2) A similar approach was taken by participants during a detailed initial consultation. However, irrespective of medical status, varied approaches were used to identify the remedy, potency, and remedy f6mi, and the source of remedy also varied. Main themes regarding the modus operandi of homeopathy included stimulation of self healing mechanisms and identifying in detail events at the point where the initial health imbalance occurred. Identification of this point together with the patient was considered a potential trigger for the healing process to begin, adding a particular importance to the role of the consultation. (3) OA patients in the primary care setting identified pain or stiffness as the most common primary complaint., with an emotional factor such as anxiety and limitations caused by their condition as a secondary complaint. A desire to reduce their medication or to improve the manageability of their condition was a common theme for interest in receiving homeopathy, with access to NHS homeopathic treatment and perceived safety of receiving treatment from medical doctors being important factors. Following 6 months of' homeopathic treatment, most participants reported an improvement in the manageability of their condition. This, however was not supported by results from VAS pain, VAS stiffness, MYCAW scores or SF36 subscore, or salivary concentration of substance P results which were not found to be significant. Few correlations were found between outcome measures. Substance P level was strongly correlated with the functional limitations sub-score of the SF36 (p=0.01), indicating a potential role for this biochemical measure in future studies. Conclusion: Findings from the current study can inform future studies on how to enhance the evidence base for homeopathic and acupuncture treatment, and inform the integration debate. Future advances in the understanding of subtle processes in the body, the placebo response, and the nature of cure may add to our understanding of' CAM treatments. However, it is likely that in order to advance the evidence base on the effectiveness of homeopathy for OA, more effective tools that are sensitive to changes in biopsychosocial dimensions of health will be necessary. Future research on combination therapies is also warranted.

A homoeopathic drug proving of Carcharhinus leucas 30CH and a subsequent comparison to the doctrine of signatures

Khan, Ismaeel Firdaus January 2018 (has links)
Submitted in partial compliance with the requirements of the Master’s Degree in Technology: Homoeopathy, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2018. / When one thinks of a homoeopathic proving one is overwhelmed with the idea of a well-defined and revised linear structured process governing a select group of participants of various racial, sex and age variation, spanning a period of time no shorter than a month with strict parameters for optimum perception of experience. One anticipates the result being a compendium of thoughts and actions and processes constructive and destructive, all documented and confined to a small black book carried and completed by the prover and assembled meticulously by the researcher guided through the experienced hand of the research supervisor. This research followed this impeccable oft repeated and fine-tuned standard. This research seeks to reinforce the efficacy of the established proving process by utilising the methodology as a guide to maximally elicit the numerous symptoms of a new unproved substance of a kingdom that has yet to truly be explored, understood, and conquered. Aim The true goal of this research is that through learning and understanding and growing one develops and seeks new avenues of cure in the homoeopathic profession, which is ultimately to the benefit of a fledgling developing science, and to humanity, with the aim of activating a true cure. The topic being investigated is a homoeopathic proving of Carcharhinus leucas 30CH followed by a subsequent comparison to the Doctrine of Signatures. The idea behind this topic was a colleague and co-researcher’s interest with the shark species which then developed into a passion and has, through diligence and timeous effort of both researchers, led to a new avenue of understanding and a wealth of ideas in terms of a possible cure. The sea kingdom itself although rich and bountiful in species of sea inhabitants and vegetation has been a scarce source of homoeopathic remedies with few major remedies being derived from this abundant reservoir. This study, then, can help fill this gap. Methodology On initiating any new proving the methodology has to be of the strictest standard. The process has to be simple, clearly defined, and easily followable, so that the symptoms produced are clear and well defined to provide the best possible materia medica. This can then serve as a strong base for reference and further study and experimentation in clinical practice, as well as a basis for variations of the proving to seek different answers. The proving process followed a standard procedure to regulate the process to provide an optimum environment for the extraction of symptoms for defining a materia medica. The study was a double-blind placebo controlled clinical homoeopathic proving with a sample of 30 provers in good health. On completion of the proving a further task of comparing the proving results to the Doctrine of Signatures was undertaken to reaffirm the knowledge gained through the proving process. Result All of which, after assembly, has resulted in another homoeopathic materia medica production, an Iliad overflowing in new knowledge to propel a generation of homoeopaths in a progressive direction of further enlightenment and, Allah willing, greater curative capacity / M

The use of homeopathic preparations has become increasing in agriculture, especially in plants. Several segments such as germination, production of seedlings, pest control and plant diseases, increased raw material assets, detoxification of plants by contaminating means and at metabolism had been reached by the concepts of Homeopathy. The procedures that allow the reversal of the salinity stresses are little known, the costs are high and the resources are not renewable, becoming necessary the adoption of new technologies. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of homeopathic preparations on agronomic performance and physiological parameters on cherry tomatoes submitted to saline stress. The statistical design was completely randomized, with eight treatments and five replicates. Different dynamizations of Natrum muriaticum (3CH; 5CH; 7CH; 9CH; 11CH; 13CH) and the controls (distilled water and 70% ethanol) were evaluated. The evaluated characteristics were: height (cm), lap diameter (mm), number of leaves, number of flowers per cluster, number of fruits, number of fruits per bunches, chlorophyll A fluorescence, stomatal conductance, relative water content, hydric potential, leaf area determination, fresh fruit phytomass determination (grams), soluble solids content (° Brix), and proline content of tomato-cherry. The application of the ultradilution of Natrum muriaticum promoted the increase in all evaluated variables related to the agronomic performance of the tomato. Natrum muriaticum 11CH and 13CH acts positively on vegetative and reproductive development of cherry tomatoes submitted to saline stress.
