2	Nature et développement du thème de l’espoir humain dans la poésie de Paul Eluard Trenholme, Janice, January 1975 (has links) L'objectif ou l'intention de la présente these est de tenter d'éclairer la nature et le développement du thème de l'espoir humain chez le poète Paul Eluard. Les critiques de cette oeuvre tres riche semblent insister sur le mérite de la poésie eluardienne d'une première période de l'oeuvre, a l'exclusion de la dernière partie, ou vice-versa. En nous basant sur une étude de l'oeuvre, nous tentons justement de montrer le dynamisme de ce passage progressif chez Eluard de l'amour exclusif a la vision, fondée sur cet amour premier, d'un amour total de l'humanité. Progression qui sera mise en valeur par quatre voies d'approche: évolution biographique, étude de l'évolution de la conception théorique de la poésie chez Eluard, analyse critique de certains thèmes et concepts principaux de l'oeuvre, et etude stylistique d'images caractéristiques qui incarnent ou traduisent 1'orientation humaine. Le premier chapitre est consacre aux principales influences historiques et littéraires qui ont mené Eluard de l'activité surréaliste a celle, publique, de la maturité. Nous essayons de donner une juste idée de l'orientation sociale de la révolte surréaliste, et de distinguer quelles activités politiques ou humanitaires, parallèlement aux épreuves personnelles, ont amène Eluard a certaines prises de position politiques et ti une poésie engagée. Le deuxième chapitre examine le développement idéologique du thème de l'espoir humain. II présente successivement deux aspects principaux de cette inspiration: la progression générale du thème dans l'oeuvre, et les affirmations de l'espoir humain dans les divers textes théoriques d'Eluard. Notre troisième chapitre constitue une présentation des poèmes significatifs et des recueils caractéristiques illustrant la progression du thème de l'espoir humain a travers l'oeuvre. Pour donner une juste idée de l'importance des thèmes dans l'économie de chaque recueil, on distinguera trois périodes principales de ce développement. Le quatrième chapitre est une analyse plus détaillée de l’évolution de certains thèmes et concepts dynamiques de l'oeuvre eluardienne. Nous observons alors 1'articulation des thèmes humanitaires sur les thèmes amoureux a travers les images de la ressemblance, du corps humain, et du monde cosmique. 4	Communication and hope in Thomas Bernhard's later prose writings Darukhanawala, Percy Soli January 2001 (has links) The aim of this study is to make an original contribution to the body of scholarship on the Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard (1931-89) by presenting a text-based investigation of his five-part autobiographical cycle (Die Ursache (1975), Der Keller (1976), Der Atem (1978), Die Kälte (1981), and Ein Kind (1982)), and the prose narratives, Beton (1982) and Auslöschung (1986). In the Introduction, I detail the method adopted to construct the argument of the thesis, after discussing pertinent aspects of Bernhard criticism and its reluctance to approach the prose fiction from a textual perspective. Chapter I examines specific stylistic devices and themes found in the autobiographies and relates them to the emergence of a greater narratorial desire to communicate with the reader and a nascent sense of personal hope. After the tortuous narratives of the sixties and early seventies which made Bernhard's reputation as a nihilistic, negative writer, the autobiographical pentalogy gives evidence of a lighter, more direct expression. The second chapter, on Beton, focuses on a number of themes (human contact, perfectionism, and music and literature) which reveal a more positive outlook in the aftermath of the autobiographical project. The third chapter, on Auslöschung, concentrates on a protagonist who has achieved considerable personal fulfilment and who manages to overcome the emotional and psychological obstacles which his predecessors in Bernhard's prose were unable to surmount. The aim of the thesis, to expose and analyse the aspects of communication and hope recurrent in Bernhard's prose works after 1975, is achieved through close reading reinforced by pertinent biographical and literary evidence. It is hoped that, by undertaking a critical examination of selected narratives, this thesis fills a critical lacuna in the substantial secondary material on Bernhard. 800

7	Beckett, Barthelme, and Vonnegut : finding hope in meaninglessness Britten, Alex M. 16 April 2012 (has links) This thesis is a study of the shifting philosophical trends in the works of Samuel Beckett, Donald Barthelme, and Kurt Vonnegut as representations of a greater shift from modernism to postmodernism. I have chosen to explore Beckett's plays Waiting for Godot and Krapp's Last Tape, Barthelme's short stories "Nothing: A Preliminary Account," "The New Music," and "Kierkegaard Unfair to Schlegal," and Vonnegut's book Timequake to see how each author seeks to find a new hope in the face of a collapsed causal system. This work is an examination of the form and content of each author's work as it pertains to their own philosophical standing and in relation to the other two authors' works.
