The importance of financial management knowledge and accounting skills among department managers in the hotel industry within the Cape Town metropolis

Davids, Nadia January 2017 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017. / The hospitality industry has undergone far-reaching changes based on discussions held with industry representatives. Due to the rapid development of accounting systems there is an over reliance on systems to control costs. This influences the accounting skills of department managers, which are insufficient to manage their departments effectively. The research investigates the role and relevance of accounting skills amongst department managers of selected hotels in Cape Town. The research methodology employed a semi-structured questionnaire that was used to collect quantitative and qualitative data. The focus was on selected three-star (3) and five-star (5) hotels within Cape Town. The findings were drawn from a small sample of 45 hotels, among which 35 participants from the 45 hotels completed the questionnaire. A review of literature identified a strong need for department managers to have accounting skills, but there is limited evidence whether they actually hold these skills. Statistical analysis of the responses revealed that less than 50% of the participants were confident that they had sufficient accounting skills to manage their departments effectively. Two key issues were identified (1) the benefits of accounting skills (2) the need for formal accounting skills training. If the findings and concerns of the lack of accounting skills are not addressed it will affect cost control, costs will increase and profitability will be negatively affected. Recommendations include more interaction and forging links between academia and industry. A challenge for hospitality academics is review current financial management training provided and introduces mentorship programmes to develop the accounting skills of department managers.

Hotellet 7 / The hotel 7

Loftén, Carl January 2015 (has links)
How to preserve a city's character? Todays architect of Gripsholm castle Jakob Strömholm showed us around in Mariefred and pointed out all the ideas he had stopped. There is a strong commitment in the city. At one point Jakob wrote decision documents whether a tree's branches would be cut or not. The decisions are made for the sake of Gripsholm castle. The weightlessness of the building reflects the welcoming gesture. The structure is carried by the black frames in concrete and the release of 700mm from the ground clarifies the weightlessness. The release does also provide light to the hotel staff in the basement. On the ground floor there is a restaurant, hotel reception and a public scene. The plot’s new urban space offers a park and outdoor terrace connected to the restaurant. I would like to put a new chapter for the city - let the old be old and new become the new without destroying each other. As a gesture, I have divided the site and created two urban spaces. The building defines and introduces one room to the other. The openings in the structure offers a welcoming flow through and around the building.

Luna Malca, Valerie Nicole 27 January 2020 (has links)
This investigation allows to have the necessary criteria for the design of a Sustainable Hotel for the tourism of Lunahuana. Given that Lunahuana, is a city that depends on adventure tourism, it is essential to maintain sustainability to develop a project in this place. That is why we are committed to integrating economic, social and environmental design. The integration of these three pillars has an important impact on the recovery of the Hotel's investment due to the savings generated in electrical energy and use of the water. The design also has to take into account the passive ventilation systems, the recycling of gray water to be reused in bathrooms and toilet tanks, treatment of wastewater for irrigation of green areas. Since this system is integral, it is not only based on the fact that the building reduces its environmental impact, but also takes into account the social environment and employees are considered as fundamental collaborators for the operation of the hotel. That is why the internal development of the collaborators is promoted through the theoretical and practical training programs (using hotel facilities) on tourism in Lunahuana, hotels, certification of boating guides, principles of sustainability and others that can provide solutions to future needs of the hotel to allow its evolution. / Tesis
