The Influence of Habitat Features on Selection and Use of a Winter Refuge by Manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) in Charlotte Harbor, Florida

Investigating alternate winter refuges for Florida manatees is increasingly important as sustained warm-water discharges from industrial and some natural sites becomes more uncertain. This study examined habitat features of possible importance to manatees by comparing a winter refuge in Charlotte Harbor, FL (the Matlacha Isles canal system) to two nearby, seemingly similar sites that are not frequented by manatees during winter. Water temperature, salinity, boat traffic, canal depth, and tidal flushing were assessed at these sites. Additionally, this study examined when and how manatees use the Matlacha Isles refuge by documenting movements, habitat use, and behaviors of manatees during the winters of 1999/2000 through 2001/2002. Water temperatures had a profound influence on manatee selection of Matlacha Isles over the two comparison canal systems. Matlacha Isles did not experience the sudden drops in water temperature following cold fronts, extreme low temperatures, or long periods of temperatures below manatees’ reported thermal tolerance of 18-20 oC that were recorded in Matlacha Pass (ambient) and the two comparison canal systems. Heat retention within Matlacha Isles may be associated with greater water depth and lower tidal flushing. Salinity and boat traffic did not seem to influence site selection by manatees. During moderately cold weather, manatees occupying Matlacha Isles forage at night in nearby Matlacha Pass and return early in the morning to Matlacha Isles, where they primarily rest all day. Neither tidal state nor boat traffic levels affected manatee travel patterns into or out of Matlacha Isles. Manatees may passively thermoregulate in the warmer waters of Matlacha Isles during the day (when they are inactive) and sustain their body temperatures at night through the heat generated during traveling to feeding sites and during ingestion (chewing) and digestion. During extreme or prolonged cold weather, Matlacha Isles provides inadequate warmth for manatees; during such times, most of them travel to a power plant on the Orange River, approximately 50 kilometers away. Findings from this study may inform resource managers as they consider attributes manatees find desirable or necessary in winter. Such information will help managers create new or enhance existing winter refuges to protect manatees.

Human disturbance alters Pacific coral reef fish beta-diversity at three spatial scales

Coral reefs are the most diverse marine ecosystem, but are increasingly threatened by local and global anthropogenic changes. In this thesis, I examine the impact of local stressors on the spatial variability of coral reef fish community composition by modeling the !-diversity of 35 islands across the Pacific Ocean that are characterized by either low or high human disturbance. By examining !-diversity across three spatial scales (within island, within island group, and across island group), and using null models to control for differences in alpha-diversity or abundance, I reveal previously undocumented effects of human disturbance on coral reef fish assemblages. At all scales, human disturbances alter !-diversity. At the largest-scale, islands with high human disturbance have lower incidence- and abundance-based !-diversity, consistent with biotic homogenization. This pattern was driven by both species with high and low abundances that differed across islands. At the smaller two scales (within islands or island groups), the presence of low abundance species is more variable on islands with high human disturbance (manifest in greater incidence-based !-diversity), but these islands have lower abundance-based !- diversity driven by moderately abundant and widespread species. Multivariate techniques show that islands with high human disturbance have a weaker species-environment relationship, and as such, I suggest that homogenization of coral reef fish assemblages by human disturbances is resulting in greater stochasticity of species composition. / Graduate / 0329 / wiwchar@uvic.ca

Implications of heat stress and local human disturbance on early life stage corals

Coral reef recovery following a disturbance relies heavily on the restoration of coral cover, via growth of existing colonies and the successful recruitment of new corals. In well-connected reef networks, recruits may be sourced from neighboring reefs. In contrast, coral recruitment on geographically isolated reefs is reliant on adult corals at that location, which may limit recovery rates following mass coral mortality events. Such mortality events are increasingly caused by climate change induced temperature anomalies, which are overlaid on the local chronic human disturbances that already affect most of the world’s coral reefs. In this thesis, I exploit a natural ecosystem-scale experiment to examine how multiple anthropogenic stressors impact densities of coral recruits and small corals (e.g., juveniles; 5 cm) on Kiritimati (Christmas Island, Republic of Kiribati), an isolated atoll in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean. Specifically, I used benthic survey videos from before, during, and one year following the 2015-2016 El Niño and coral settlement tiles deployed during the three years after the event at 22 sites across the island, to quantify small corals and coral recruits, respectively. Local chronic stress negatively impacted small corals, with densities 47% lower at sites exposed to very high levels of chronic stress prior to the heat stress. The El Niño further resulted in a 56% loss of small corals, particularly for competitive coral species. Following the event, stress tolerant small corals rebounded to pre-El Niño densities within a year, whereas competitive and small corals overall had non-significant increases. I also quantified a low recruitment rate of 8.31 recruits m-2 per year (± 1.9 SE) during the three years following the El Niño compared to previous studies around the Pacific; recruits were genetically identified as primarily belonging to the stress tolerant family Agariciidae and the competitive genus Pocillopora. Local human disturbance also impacted coral recruitment with densities significantly lower at those with the greatest local chronic disturbance, together suggesting that local disturbance impedes post-settlement survival of recruits and the resilience of young corals during acute stress events. With increased net primary productivity, densities of both small corals and recruits (non-significant) also increased, which could reflect the positive influence of coral heterotrophic nutrition supplements during and after stress events, increasing survivability. Despite very low overall coral recruitment, all island regions did have some recruits, but Vaskess Bay (a bay region on the southern part of the island) had the highest densities. Overall these results indicate the negative consequences combined chronic and acute stressors can have on coral recruits, small corals, and accompanying coral resilience. When viewed together, this work suggests how the resilience is compromised by chronic stressors on Kiritimati and that the recovery trajectory may be variable across the disturbance gradient. Thus, local reef management may provide an avenue for enhancing recovery rates as acute temperature anomalies increase in frequency under our current climate trajectory. / Graduate / 2021-01-14

The migration ecology of North American turkey vultures wintering in the Neotropics: spatial and population dynamics

The spatial and population dynamics of avian scavengers are poorly understood. This information is key for management and conservation interventions that guarantee long-term species conservation. My goal in this dissertation is to fill information gaps on the movement ecology of New World vultures using the Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) as a model species. I used a continental-wide satellite telemetry dataset to study the migration ecology, space-use, and demography of the three North American breeding populations of Turkey Vultures wintering in the Neotropics during a 17-year period. I found that primary productivity, but not weather, triggered Turkey Vulture migratory behavior, migration initiated when primary productivity dropped at the end of the breeding and non-breeding season. Migratory connectivity was high at the species level (0.85, 95% CI: 0.74–0.94). However, I found evidence of intrapopulation segregation during the non-breeding season demonstrated by lower values of migratory connectivity in each population. I investigated how seasonality interacted with human disturbance, landscape composition and configuration to mediate patterns of geographic and environmental space-use, and annual and seasonal survival probabilities. Environmental space-use was best explained by landscape configuration. Geographic space-use exhibited a quadratic response to landscape configuration metrics, suggesting that Turkey Vultures maximize space-use in landscape with intermediate disturbance. Human disturbance, but not but not landscape composition and configuration, influenced survival rates in space and time. Overall annual survival averaged 0.87 (95% CI = 0.74 – 0.98). Mortality risk was low in western and central populations but was 3.7 times greater for vultures in the eastern population. Risk of mortality for all vulture populations increased with road density, and this was greater during the non-breeding and return migration seasons. My results suggest that spatial and population dynamics are affected at a continental scale by the energy landscape, intermediate disturbance and human disturbance. My dissertation emphasizes the importance of an integrative empirical-modeling approach to address questions on effects of resources availability and search efficiency in the spatial and population dynamics of avian scavengers.

Reducing Human Disturbance to Atlantic Flyway Shorebirds Using Social Science Methods

Human disturbance is a significant threat to shorebirds in North America. Disturbance can result in direct mortality or have long-term impacts on the survival of shorebirds. Land managers employ a variety of management techniques to minimize anthropogenic impacts on shorebirds, but because the Atlantic Flyway is ecologically and recreationally diverse, management can vary among sites. This thesis used social science methods to understand the extent to which human disturbance is managed and how human disturbance is managed. Specifically, we surveyed land managers and biologists in the U.S. and Canada portions of the Atlantic Flyway to examine potential disturbances, types of activities that are restricted, when restrictions occur, the perceived effectiveness of management techniques, public compliance with restrictions, and resource needs of managers. With the findings from this research, agencies and organizations that manage shorebirds can assess where to invest time, effort, and resources to reduce disturbance. We also used a survey of dog walkers to ascertain the benefits and constraints to leashing dogs near shorebirds because dog walking is one of the top-rated potential disturbances to shorebirds. Additionally, we sought to understand the personal and social norms related to dog walking and evaluated if a community-based social marketing (CBSM) approach would be enhanced by the addition of norms. Using a CBSM approach, we provided insights on strategies to promote voluntarily leashing of dogs near shorebirds. Through this thesis, we aimed to bridge the needs of people and the needs of shorebirds, in an effort to produce effective conservation outcomes. / Master of Science / Shorebird populations have declined in the past four decades. Declines are due in part to human use of coastal areas, which can result in harm to shorebirds. To reduce human impacts on shorebirds and help land managers make decisions about management, this thesis used social science methods. Using a survey of managers, we found that management primarily occurs during the spring and summer and is less frequently during the fall and winter. Of the human activities that could disturb shorebirds, walking dogs off leash is the most commonly regulated. But people are also least commonly compliant with these regulations. Managers believe that the best ways to reduce disturbance to shorebirds included fencing, informal outreach, and signage. More staff and volunteers are also needed to help reduce disturbance. In a subsequent survey of dog walkers, we learned why people leash (or do not leash) dogs near shorebirds. We found that people leash to protect shorebirds, keep dogs safe, control dogs, and keep dogs from bothering people. People choose not to leash because leashing prevents dogs from exercising and socializing, and people believe dogs respond to commands. People who leash dogs generally believe others expect them to leash their dogs near shorebirds. Knowing why people leash or do not leash can help predict leashing behavior and encourage dog walkers to voluntarily leash dogs near shorebirds. This thesis considers the needs of people and the needs of shorebirds as way to achieve effective conservation solutions.

Evaluating wildlife response to vegetation restoration on reclaimed mine lands in southwestern Virginia

Coal mining has had profound impacts in the Appalachian region, initiating a need to understand the implications of traditional and current reclamation practices on wildlife. I evaluated wildlife use of reclaimed sites of varying ages and cover types in southwestern Virginia. I compared reclaimed sites to another form of anthropogenic disturbance (clearcut) and relatively undisturbed mature forest. Birds were surveyed during early mornings throughout the breeding season in 2007 and 2008 using the point count method. Amphibians were surveyed using artificial cover, constrained-time night searches, and auditory pond surveys. Microhabitat data were collected at each sampling point and were combined with landscape-level GIS information to relate habitat characteristics and wildlife patterns. I observed 80 bird species using reclaimed areas, clearcuts, and mature forest. Pre-regulation sites (prior to the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977) supported the highest number of species overall. Cluster analysis identified 4 bird associations based on habitat characteristics. I developed site-specific, landscape-level, and mixed-scale logistic regression models to identify habitat characteristics that best predicted the presence of 27 species. For 18 species, mixed-scale models performed best, suggesting the importance of a multi-scale approach to habitat analysis. Salamanders were generally not detected on reclaimed areas, possibly due to the lack of soil moisture, leaf litter, and woody debris on young sites. Frogs were present in all water bodies surveyed, suggesting the importance of managing ponds and wetlands on reclaimed sites. Identifying and focusing on important habitat characteristics will help managers enhance post-mining land for wildlife. / Master of Science

Building a Comprehensive Understanding of Disturbance Mitigation in Migrating Shorebirds

Human disturbance is a serious threat facing shorebirds, and reducing disturbance presents a significant conservation challenge. It requires an understanding of the complex factors that influence both shorebird biology and human behavior related to shorebirds and coastal environments. This thesis used information from ecological and social science fields, along with the applied knowledge of conservation practitioners to build a more holistic understanding of human-shorebird interactions, specifically related to human disturbance of migrating shorebirds. Further, this research provides practical solutions for better managing these interactions. To accomplish this, we used the Delphi technique, an iterative group communication process, to bring scientists and managers together to develop a shared definition of "human disturbance to shorebirds" and a list of priority disturbance categories that affect migratory shorebirds. Next, we collated and synthesized literature on human disturbance during migration and drivers of human behavior related to disturbance or potential management actions. Then, through manager interviews, we examined how shorebird management decisions are made during migration and explored how managers balance the needs of shorebirds and public use of their sites. The disturbance definition and priority disturbance categories, literature synthesis, and manager interviews were used to create a best practices guidance document for reducing human disturbance to migratory shorebirds in the Northeastern U.S. Finally, we conducted a survey of beachgoers to evaluate a shorebird conservation outreach campaign and examined the factors that influence pro-shorebird behavior change. This research demonstrates how integrating social and ecological information and expert opinion can inform conservation and management. / M. Modulação do estoque de carbono em paisagens fragmentadas da Mata Atlântica em função dos efeitos de borda / Edge effects modulation of carbon stocks in fragmented Atlantic forest landscapes

Apesar da reconhecida importância da fragmentação no balanço de carbono (C) das florestas tropicais, a maior parte do conhecimento a cerca deste assunto provém de estudos conduzidos na floresta Amazônica e desconsidera processos relacionados à influência da configuração da paisagem. Em particular, estimativas precisas da emissão de CO2 devido à fragmentação devem levar em consideração efeitos aditivos de borda e a idade das bordas. Nós investigamos estes efeitos sobre parâmetros estruturais de florestas (densidade, altura e área basal das árvores) e no estoque de C em oito fragmentos florestais (13 a 362 ha) antigos (>=70 anos), cercados de pastagens, em uma região de Mata Atlântica. Amostramos 5297 troncos, divididos em quatro tratamentos em cada um dos fragmentos: interior dos fragmentos; bordas antigas (>50 anos) em quina; bordas antigas retas; bordas novas (<50 anos) retas. Calculamos a biomassa acima do solo (BAS) através de equações alométricas que consideram a altura do tronco e seu diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) e convertemos esse valor em carbono estocado na vegetação. O estoque de C foi altamente variável entre tratamentos, abrangendo valores entre 6.61 Mg ha-1 até 87.96 Mg ha-1 (média= 29.55 ± 14.97 Mg ha-1). As áreas de interior continham um estoque de C maior, bem como maior área basal, densidade de árvores e árvores mais altas do que as de borda. No entanto, a seleção de modelos não detectou influência da idade ou de efeitos aditivos no estoque de C. Nossos resultados sugerem que os padrões de efeitos de borda para a Mata Atlântica são diferentes dos observados em florestas tropicais fragmentadas mais recentemente, como é o caso da Amazônia. A Mata Atlântica tem um longo histórico de perturbação humana e uma dinâmica complexa de desmatamento e regeneração, que pode levar a uma condição de degradação generalizada, posto que até áreas mais distantes das bordas em manchas remanescentes de Mata Atlântica já perderam quantidades significativas de carbono. Nestas paisagens antrópicas, os efeitos de borda que atuam sobre a mortalidade de árvores e na redução da BAS podem ser mais abrangentes do que inicialmente estimado pelos modelos construídos para a floresta Amazônica. / Despite the importance of fragmentation for tropical forest carbon (C) balance, most of our knowledge comes from few sites in the Amazon and disregard underlying processes that relates landscape configuration with C stocks. Particularly, accurate estimation of CO2 emission from fragmentation must account for additive edge effects and edge age. Here we investigated those effects on carbon stock and forest structure (density, height, basal area) in eight old-growth forest (>=70 years) fragments (13 to 362 ha), surrounded by pasture, in the Brazilian Atlantic forest region. We sampled 5,297 stems in four distinct treatments, distributed in each fragment: fragment interiors; old (> 50 years) corner edge; old straight edge; and new (< 50 years) straight edge. Aboveground biomass (AGB) was estimated from tree height and diameter at breast height (DBH), and converted to carbon. C stock was highly variable between treatments, scoring from 6.61 Mg ha-1 up to 87.96 Mg ha-1 (average of 29.55 ± 14.97 Mg ha-1). Interior treatments had higher C stock, basal area, tree stem density and taller trees than edges. We found no significant effects of edge age or additive edge effects on C stocks. These results suggest that edge effects in the heavily-disturbed Atlantic rainforest may differ than those observed in more recently fragmented tropical forests, such as the Amazonian forest. In heavily human-modified landscapes, edge effects on tree mortality and reduction on AGB may contribute to overall higher levels of degradation across entire forest fragments, reducing the observed difference between edge and interior habitats, and suggesting that existing Amazonian forest models may underestimate the true impacts of tropical forest fragmentation for C storage.
