Soil Chemical and Microbial Properties in a Mixed Stand of Spruce and Birch in the Ore Mountains (Germany)—A Case StudySchua , Karoline, Wende , Stefan, Wagner , Sven, Feger, Karl-Heinz 12 February 2016 (has links) (PDF)
A major argument for incorporating deciduous tree species in coniferous forest stands is their role in the amelioration and stabilisation of biogeochemical cycles. Current forest management strategies in central Europe aim to increase the area of mixed stands. In order to formulate statements about the ecological effects of mixtures, studies at the stand level are necessary. In a mixed stand of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) in the Ore Mountains (Saxony, Germany), the effects of these two tree species on chemical and microbial parameters in the topsoil were studied at one site in the form of a case study. Samples were taken from the O layer and A horizon in areas of the stand influenced by either birch, spruce or a mixture of birch and spruce. The microbial biomass, basal respiration, metabolic quotient, pH-value and the C and N contents and stocks were analysed in the horizons Of, Oh and A. Significantly higher contents of microbial N were observed in the Of and Oh horizons in the birch and in the spruce-birch strata than in the stratum containing only spruce. The same was found with respect to pH-values in the Of horizon and basal respiration in the Oh horizon. Compared to the spruce stratum, in the birch and spruce-birch strata, significantly lower values were found for the contents of organic C and total N in the A horizon. The findings of the case study indicated that single birch trees have significant effects on the chemical and microbial topsoil properties in spruce-dominated stands. Therefore, the admixture of birch in spruce stands may distinctly affect nutrient cycling and may also be relevant for soil carbon sequestration. Further studies of these functional aspects are recommended.

Previous issue date: 2012-02-15 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / In Brazil, eucalyptus is planted in regions with different climate and soil conditions, which affect harvest residue decomposition and the rate of carbon transference fromresidues (Cres) to the soil, hence influencing soil organic matter (SOM) content. SOM is considered one of the most important indicators of soil quality and forest production sustainability. Debarking the trunk of the tree during forest harvesting contributes to increase the amount of residues left in the site, but it may impair residues decomposition due to the large C:N ratio of the material. However, very little is known about bark influence on eucalypt residue decomposition and its role on SOM formation under the Brazilian conditions. It is a common practice the use of low rates of N fertilizers in eucalypt plantations in Brazil, which would contribute to slower microbial activity in the decomposition process. Leaving the residues on the surface without incorporating them into the soil would also help to limit Cres to SOM. Hence, this study has the objective to determine the influence of leaving on soil surface eucalypt bark and slash in site after harvesting operations as wells as the effect of nitrogen fertilizer addition on the rates of residue decomposition and Cres to the SOM, and how climate and soil characteristics affect these processes. The experiment was installed in four sites (Eunápolis, Aracruz, Virginópolis and Belo Oriente) belonging to the Atlantic Forest biome and six (João Pinheiro, Três Marias, Curvelo, Itamarandiba e Luiz Antônio) belonging to the Cerrado (savanah type of vegetation), all varying in climate and soil characteristics. In each site the 12 treatments (3 slash handling systems, i.e., complete removal, left in the site with trunk debarking or not; 2 slash disposal systems, i.e., left on soil surface or incorporated into the soil; and 2 rates of N, i.e., zero or 200 kg ha-1) were laid out in random blocks with 4 replications. The remaining dry matter was quantified at 0, 3, 6, 12 and 36 months later, and estimated the decomposition constant (k) and half life time (t0,5) of the residues. Residue Ct to SOM was assessed 12 months after starting the trial, by soil physical fractionation to separate particulate organic matter (POM) and organic matter associated to soil minerals (MAM). The influence of climate and soil characteristics on t0,5 and Cres was estimated by linear multiple regression. Residue incorporation into the soil favored both the decomposition and Cres. Decomposition was enhanced by debarking but less Cres was detected. Nitrogen addition had little effect on the residues decomposition rate and SOM stabilization. Residues t0,5 was shorter in sites with higher rainfall regimes and mean annual temperatures and residues incorporation, mainly in sandy soils. The mean residue t0,5 was 1.28 year. Cres is reduced with increasing mean temperature and soil acidity and enhanced by increased clay content and deficit of C saturation of the soil. In average, the rate of C recovering was 15 % from the decomposed residues, in 12 months.

Soil Chemical and Microbial Properties in a Mixed Stand of Spruce and Birch in the Ore Mountains (Germany)—A Case StudySchua, Karoline, Wende, Stefan, Wagner, Sven, Feger, Karl-Heinz 12 February 2016 (has links)

Procena remedijacionog potencijala sedimenta zagađenog prioritetnim organskim zagađujućim materijama / Investigation of remediation potential of sediment polluted with priority organic pollutantsGrgić Marko 16 August 2019 (has links)
<p>Predmet istraživanja ove doktorske disertacije je procena potencijalno biodostupne frakcije odabranih prioritetnih organskih polutanata (pentahlorbenzena, heksahlorbenzena, lindana, trifluralina, 4-oktilfenola i 4-nonilfenola) u sedimentu, ispitivanje biodegradacionog potencijala ovih jedinjenja u sedimentu u različitim uslovima, kao i procena potencijala stabilizacije<br />sedimenta dodatkom ugljeničnih sorpcionih agenasa. U cilju razvoja metoda za određivanje biodostupnosti odabranih organskih polutanata ispitivane su i optimizovane metode višestepene i jednostepene parcijalne ekstrakcije primenom sledećih hemijskih agenasa: Tenaks smole, XAD-4 smole i rastvora ciklodekstrina (2-hidroksipropil-β-ciklodekstrina, β-ciklodekstrina i metil-β-ciklodekstrina). Optimalni agens za procenu biodostupne frakcije odabranih organskih zagađujućih materija sa sedimenta XAD-4 smola, a optimalno vreme ekstrakcije primenom jednostepenih ekstrakcija je oko 8 h. Procena biodegradacionog potencijala odabranih prioritetnih organskih zagađujućih materija u sedimentu ispitana je u različitim aerobnim i anaerobnim uslovima uz optimizaciju uslova putem biostimulacije i bioaugmentacije. Sva tri sorbenta pokazala su veliki remedijacioni potencijal za sediment zagađen organskim zagađujućim supstancama, ali je aktivni ugalj pokazao najbolje performance.</p> / <p>The aim of the research in this PhD dissertation is the assessment of the potentially biodegradable fraction of selected organic pollutants (pentachlorbenzene, hexachlorobenzene, lindane, trifluraline, 4-octylphenol and 4-nonylphenol) in the sediment, estimation of the biodegradation potential of these compounds in sediment in different conditions, as well as the assessment of the stabilization potential sediment by the sediment amendment with of carbon rich sorption agents. In order to develop and optimise methods for the bioavailability assessment of the selected organic pollutants, methods of multistage and single-step non exhaustive extraction were studied using the following chemical agents: Tenax resin, XAD -4 resin and a cyclodextrin solution (2-hydroxypropyl- β-cyclodextrin, β-cyclodextrin and methyl-β-cyclodextrin). Results showed that optimal agent for estimating the bioavailable fraction of selected organic pollutants from the sediment is XAD-4 resins, and that the optimum extraction time using single-step extraction is about 8 h. The assessment of the biodegradation potential of selected priority organic pollutants in the sediment was examined in various aerobic and anaerobic conditions, with the optimization of conditions through biostimulation and bioaugmentation. It has been shown that all six selected compounds possess significant biodegradation potential in the anaerobic environment, where in the case of lindane and trifluraline there is complete removal of the bioavailable amount of the compound using all four inoculum tested. Aerobic potential under the applied conditions has been showen only for alkyl phenols, where almost all of the bioavailable fraction of the compound in the sediment was removed (78-85%). The potential of sediment remediation with the amendment of sediment withcarbon rich materials was examined from the aspect of selecting carbon sorption agents (activated carbon, biochar and humus); estimation the optimal material doses; the long -term and short-term effects of the addition of these agents on the bioavailability of organic pollutants in order to examine the effect of aging and the toxicity of the resulting mixtures. The results of the stabilization of pollutants in the sediment show that: (1) increasing the dose of all three sorption agents leads to an increase in the immobilization efficiency and reduction of the bioavailable fraction of the selected organic compounds; (2) aging of the amended sediment during the first 90 days results in a further reduction of the biodegradable fraction of all compounds, after which the biodegradable concentration of the selected compounds remain the same in the case of activated carbon amendment, while the bioavailable fraction of the compound increases with the use of biohar and humus. Phytotoxicity tests showed that <em>Zea mays </em> accumulated significantly higher amount of selected organic pollutants from unamended sediment, comparing to <em>Cucurbita pepo </em> and <em>Lactuca sativa</em>. Toxicity of activated carbon and humus amended sediment assessed by <em>Vibrio fischeri </em> luminescence inhibition test and by measuring <em>Zea mays </em>germination and biomass yield was significantly reduced in the amended sediment samples. Accumulation of the selected organic pollutants in the <em>Zea mays</em> biomass in the unamended sediment were a significantly higher than in the humus and activated carbon amended sediment. Both sorbents show potential to be used as remediation agents for organically contaminated sediment, but activated carbon exhibited the better performance.</p>

B. Standortskunde, Vegetationskunde, Waldwachstumskunde, Ökonomie, Zoologie, Waldbau) empfohlen. / In a typical managed forest of the Ore Mountains (Saxony, SE Germany), consisting of 60 years old Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] KARST.) admixed with silver birches (Betula pendula Roth) the impact of the admixture on topsoil properties was quantified and evaluated. This study was conducted in a stand which is representative for the Ore Mountains regarding the soil type, deposition and liming. Photosynthetic active radiation, the layer of herbs and mosses, the mass and distribution of the litter fall, the dynamics of litter decom-position, and morphology of the humus layer as well as the chemical and microbiological topsoil properties were all analyzed. The study was based on a single-tree-approach where samples were collected along transects from selected sample trees of birch and spruce. Transects were established within areas of pure spruce as well as within areas of spruce and birch mixture. Three different strata were defined based on the situation of the examined points in relation to the crowns of birch and spruce: the birch stratum, the spruce stratum and the spruce-birch stratum with measurements from underneath the crowns of birches, spruces and the transition area between spruce and birch crowns, respectively.
Higher photosynthetic active radiation values were detected in the area underneath the crowns of birch crowns in comparison with the area underneath the crowns of spruce. Higher values of photosynthetic active radiation were also registered within areas of light foliage and in gaps in the pure spruce stand. The number of ground vegetation species underneath pure spruce and in the mixture of spruce and birch was negatively correlated with the distance to the crown edge. But altogether the same number of ground vegetation species was found in the mixed stand and in the pure spruce stand. A few species were, however, specific for each stand type. A higher coverage of ground vegetation was found in the mixture of spruce and birch in comparison to the pure spruce. The results of the litter traps show marginal densities of birch leaves at a distance of more than 16 m from the birch stem. The majority of the dry flux density was found within a radius of 10 m around the birch stem. Within this area an effect of the birch litter on top soil properties was expected. The whole dry litter mass was measured in the study time of a relative vital birch with a diameter at breast high of ca. 38 cm and was ca. 8 kg. Modeling the amount of litter for birches with lower vitality indicated a dry litter mass of 6.3 kg. The mass lost of the birch leaves in the litter bags was in each stratum the highest at a ratio of 5 to 1 of birch leaves to spruce needles. The greatest loss of dry mass for spruce needles was registered in litter-bags with pure needles. The litter-bags under the birch crowns exhibited the best decomposition rate of birch leaves and spruce needles for all variants. The C/N-ratios of the litter showed no clear positive effects of the birch crown. But they were clearly smaller for the birch leaves in contrast to the spruce needles in all variants, in each stratum and at all dates. Furthermore the C/N-curves drop away more for the birch leaves in contrast to the spruce needles. The thickness of the Of-horizon in contrast to the Oh-horizon showed clear spatial patterns for the mixed situation and the pure spruce area. Thus in the Of-horizon a clear spatial pattern in connection to the single tree was apparent. The highest thickness was found close to the stem. The highest total thickness of the Of- and Oh-horizon was found underneath the pure spruce stand. When comparing the thickness of the humus layers between the stratums, significant differences where found for the Of-layer between the birch stratum and the spruce stratum. In addition, for the thickness of the Oh-layer as well as for the total thickness of all layers, significant differences were observed between the spruce-birch stratum and the birch stratum. The humus form was a mor-like moder. In the spruce stratum more fine-humus-rich variants of the mor-like moder was found, in the spruce-birch stratum and in the birch stratum it was more fine-humus-poor variants of the mor-like moder. Significant differences between the stratums in the Of-layer were found with respect to acidification, the pool of Ctot and Ntot, the content of Ccarbonat and Ntot and the metabolic quotient. For the Oh-layer significant differences between the stratums were found for the ratio of Corg and N, the content of Ctot and Nmic, the ratio of Cmic and Nmic, the basal respiration activity and the metabolic quotient. In the A-horizon significant differences between the stratums were found for the ration of Corg and N, the content of Ctot, Ccarbonat and Corg and the pool of Ntot. The results of multivariate ordination confirm the formation of stratums again. Thereby the contents of C, Mg, Ca and N had the greatest influence. The data analysis of the effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) showed differences between the stratums mainly for the A horizon. In the spruce stratum the ECEC was lowest and the percentage of acid cations at the ECEC was greatest. The highest ECEC was in the birch stratum.
Different results showed clear tree effects. These were only found in areas, which are influenced by birch leaves. In this study, a minimum tree admixture of 10% was required before an impact on the ground conditions of the whole stand was observed. Therefore, based on the results of this study, an admixture of birch of 10% is recommended. These results however must be verified through future research. These findings can be used to assist in meeting the goals of silvicultural management for mixed spruce and birch forests in Germany. Definition of explicit ecological and economic criteria created from a combination of results from different forest research sectors (e. g. Site ecology, Vegetation science, Forest Growth, Economy, Zoology, Silviculture) is recommended.

Evaluation of a Restoration Approach After One Century – Effects of Admixed European Beech on the Natural Regeneration Potential and Humus Condition in Spruce StandsAxer, Maximilian, Kluckow, Fabian, Wagner, Sven 02 February 2024 (has links)
About 100 years ago, groups of European beech were reintroduced into Norway spruce stands in some parts of Germany as a restoration approach. The aim of this approach was to maintain or rehabilitate the ecological function of soil fertility and the regeneration option of beech for the next generation. The effect of beech groups on surrounding spruce stands was studied in the Ore Mountains by recording natural regeneration of beech and humus layer thickness and form. Point pattern statistics were used to analyse the spread of beech regeneration and to determine factors influencing its establishment. It was found that the density of regeneration decreases with increasing distance from the beech group. However, beech regeneration was found up to distances of 69 m. Furthermore, it becomes evident that PAR radiation (maximum regeneration densities at PAR values of 35 W/m²) and fencing (3.41 times higher regeneration density compared to unfenced areas) against deer have a positive influence on beech regeneration density. Ordered categorical models were used to model humus form and non-linear models were used to model humus layer thickness. It could be proven that the most bioactive humus forms and lowest humus layer thicknesses were found within the beech group. With increasing distance to the beech group, the total humus layer thickness and the proportion of mormoder in the spruce stand increased. The positive influence of the beech group on the humus composition extends to about 40 m from the centre of the beech group. Due to the former arrangement of the beech groups in the terrain, the effects can also extend to the spruce stands in between. The hypotheses on the restoration approach of reintroducing groups of beech into spruce stands formulated by foresters 100 years ago can thus be confirmed. For future restoration approaches of spruce stands, groupwise mixtures of beech should be established with a distance of 40–50 m.

Despite its importance to aquatic ecosystems, origin and production mechanisms of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) are still subject to discussion. This thesis aims to better understand the role of hydrology in controlling both DOC production in soils and export by stream waters. High frequency monitoring of soils and streams waters was carried out during an entire hydrological cycle in the Kervidy-Naizin catchment (Morbihan). The DOC was characterized by its stable carbon isotopic composition, and groundwater table dynamic was also analyzed during the same period. The analysis of seasonal variations in both DOC concentration and composition reveals a succession in the sources and mechanisms of production of DOC in soils of valley bottom in line with changes in the hydrological regime of the basin. Thus, during the autumn period of rising water-table, the COD compartment has a low aromatic character and a particular isotopic composition, suggesting a microbial origin. This reservoir of very small size (5% of the annual flux of DOC exported by the stream) is fully exhausted by the first autumn storm events. The increase of water-table in the upland domain leads to the mobilization of a second DOC pool characterized by a high aromaticity and a isotopic signature similar to those of soil organic matter. This compartment corresponds to "old" humic fraction of the soil and has a size much larger than the first (90% of annual flux). However, this compartment includes contributions of DOC from riparian soils and also upland soils. Finally, the water-table drawdown in the middle of spring marks the beginning of the drying period of the catchment and the return to the soil of the “fresh” DOC pool. As a result, concentration and composition of DOC transported by the stream vary greatly across a seasonal scale (temporal variability of production processes DOC). The surface horizons of soils riparian soils are the main source of DOC, which handle between 60 and 80% of stream DOC flux during flood events. An important result is that the DOC pool seems limited in upland soils, while its seems no-limited in riparian soils. Finally, the results obtained in this thesis demonstrate the major control of the dynamics of the water-table on the mechanisms of production of DOC from the soil as well as the spatial location of DOC sources and DOC flux transferred from the soil to stream through the hydrological cycle. They also validate the hypothesis that DOC export by rivers mobilizes rather a set of sources located along the upland-riparian-stream continuum. Another major result of this thesis is the validation of stable carbon isotopes as a tool for tracing sources and dynamics of DOC in the catchment.

The aCDOM spatial and temporal distribution analysis in Funil reservoir /Martins, Sarah Cristina Araújo. January 2017 (has links)
The colored dissolved organic carbon (CDOM) is the colored fraction of DOM that could be used as a proxy for its occurrence in inland waters. The Funil hydroelectric reservoir (FHR) was chosen as the study site for this work. In this context, the general aim of this research was to identify and to evaluate the changes in CDOM absorption coefficient (aCDOM) at the water surface over time (1995 - 2010), and to understand its relationship with land cover land use (LULC) changes in FHR watershed. For match this goal, (i) a LULC historical mapping (1995 - 2010, with 5 years of interval) was made to change detection, (ii) a bio-optical model set and a new model were studied in order to estimate aCDOM from simulated reflectance (Rrs_simulated) for Thematic Mapper (TM) sensor, (iii) a aCDOM spatial and temporal distribution was obtained by applying a bio-optical model in TM/Landsat-5 imagery from 1995 to 2010, and (iv) the possible CDOM/DOM sources in FHR were found, as well aCDOM historical behavior/distribution over time was analysed. Thus, the first study was the support vector machine algorithm (SVM) parameterization according to study area characteristics to LULC supervised classi...
